I loaded the 2018 PlusPak today, along with the Extra Styles Pak 4 onto Windows 7 on a laptop. Everything’s present and works fine except for one problem----slow cursor response during song play---i.e., the black cursor that highlights the chords, while the song is playing. It’s about a beat behind. Any cure for that? Also, is that cursor hard-wired into the program, or could that be disabled, if one wanted to? I just need it play on the beat.

Hi Larry
Most annoying when it happens
I had the same experience so I went back to basics
1.close any open programs including BB
2.do a HD Disc clean
3.do a HD defrag
4 complete close down of the computer and reboot
In my case it solved the problem - worth a try

Larry,
Jazzman's advice is very good.
A couple of years ago, my BIAB started going slow and a degfrag and restart got everything back in order again. Since then I've been regularly defragging.
One other thing that you can try before that is that BIAB 2018 installs the new WAS audio driver as the default.
Under "Audio | Audio Drivers/Settings" try changing the WAS driver to MME. That might have an impact.
Regards, Noel

Hi Noel
Also agree about the WAS driver - didn't realise it was the default at first in bb 2018 but kept getting random glitches so I changed back to MME

Solid State Drive Warning?
I have heard from reliable sources, including drive manufacturer's and defrag software manufacturer's, that you should not defrag a SSD drive as it will shorten the lifespan by the many writes and rewrites that will be going on during the defrag.
This does make sense to me since read and write cycles are not dependent on mechanical parts to seek out data on moving platters.
I have my BIAB on an SSD drive and am hesitant to defrag because of the warnings.

More recent SSD drives have the Trim command which replaces the function of Defrag. Do not defrag an SSD.
I missed where it was stated that an SSD is involved here; I need to go back and read the thread again. Even so, I can think of several more likely causes.

Many thanks for the suggestions. Changing to MME did the trick. I first cleaned the C: drive and defragmented. Nothing changed with that. Others might be aware of this issue (slow cursor), if they move to 2018. I amazed myself in that I was able to change the driver, or whatever it’s called, since I rarely go beyond the surface of BIAB. I simply play songs and enjoy the many styles.

I have my BIAB on an SSD drive and am hesitant to defrag because of the warnings. Modern, third party defrag utility programs analyze a drive prior to doing anything. When the program realizes the drive is a SSD the program will automatically use the trim function instead of defrag. I don't know if the built in defrag utility used in Win 8, 8.1 or 10 work this way or not but the defrag in Win 7 does not. +++ THIS +++ defrag by Auslogic is highly rated and automatically recognizes SSDs. Note first use may take a few hours if you both optimize and defrag the drive. It's worth the time as doing both will noticeably decrease boot up time.

I googled my slow cursor problem on Band in a Box 2021 and I found your thread in the forum. Just to let you know I'm after changing the MME driver back to WAS and this has definitely solved my slow cursor problem. Thanks, Dermot Mc Mahon

I'm glad the problem was solved.
One comment about SSD drives and Defrag. While Windows does recognize a SSD and will not defrag it, there is one case I created myself where Windows was confused: I build all my own PCs and one time I replaced the boot hard drive with a SSD. Windows would have been very happy to defrag it.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option
Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!
Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!
For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.
Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!
Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
