How does the settings bar "louder (per bar)" work? I assumed that once an instrument was muted if you wanted to bring it back gradually into the mix later in the song you wouldn't do "Back to Normal", you would use "louder (per bar)". When I have attempted that function the instrument stays muted. Is there a way to gradually increase the volume of an instrument to peak at a certain point in a song?

When I tried "Change By" +/- the instrument remained muted. Can anyone help me with these issues? (Step by Step if possible.) Thanks.

This is an interesting question. I’ve never tried this. I normally just bring an instrument back in by Return to Normal. For subtle adjustments like this, I would normally take the BIAB track into a DAW and use an automation curve / fader. I’ll try some experiments in BIAB though.

I suspect that the Change By + is actually working, but it would take many measures to hear the effect when starting from silent. Very low MIDI velocity settings are as good as silent.

And, welcome to the forum.

Hi
I do not think mute is quite the same as reducing the volume in midi.
Once a track is muted it is inactive until un muted or returned to normal,
This I believe is a toggle so when muted no commands will work on it in that state, until it is an un muted active track again,

So it might pay to reduce the volume by a negative amount at a bar then move to the bar you want to increase volume from and introduce your increase by bar from there.
The size of the steps will obviously effect the speed of the fade up, through the song.
You can always set a cap on this when you reach the bar volume you want if before the end by inserting your cap value at that bar. So that you don’t sail on up to 127!

Just my thoughts I have not tested this.
Mike

Louder per Bar - Don't Mute the track -
To Fade in an instrument from the beginning of a song:
I tested with Style is M_FSTOST.STY (New Age Ostinato Piano w/ Band) at a tempo of 110 on a 16 bar chord chart and will demonstrate a fade in the Supermidi piano over 4 bars.

1. Bar one - Select the piano Gain Stage and set it to -127 This does not mute the channel but rather it turns the volume all the way off.

2. Bar two - Select the piano Louder by Bar and set the number to 34 (+): The reason I choose 34 is because I want to have the piano fade in over the first four bars. To go from 0 volume to normal volume across those 4 bars. Bar 4, my piano reaches the default BIAB setting for normal volume. If you want a longer or shorter fade in, simply divide the number of bars of the fade in into 127. (I always round up to 128 and do the math in my head.) +127 is maximum volume. 90 is considered normal volume but I have had better success using 128. You should experiment with both to determine which works best for you. It also varies by song/style/instrument. Sometimes one way works better than the other.

3. Bar 5 - Now that my piano has reached its normal volume in Bar 4, I must stop the increasing Louder per Bar or my piano will continue to increase in gain. So, at Bar 5 I select the piano track Return to normal and this stops the piano from increasing gain per bar and freezes the piano volume at normal unless I change it at some point later in the song.

I also use Fade per bar in the bar that precedes where I mute a track and this smooths the transition and makes the mute less abrupt in most cases. Again, because of variations in instrument volume, you have to experiment to get the best fade for your particular song. Most times in my songs 6-14 will be the range where I find a fade that suits me. The mute stops the fade out.

I use Change By to raise a soloist during a solo and normally use Change By negative numbers to lower one or more instruments during a solo to make room for the soloist instrument and reverse these changes bringing the backing instruments louder and reduce the soloist at the end of the solo.

EDIT: I saw Mike's posting just before I posted mine and will add to his post. This method works the same with RealTracks, MIDI or Supermidi.

Thanks for that very helpful information Charlie! I had never taken the time to figure that function out. I always send my tracks individually to my daw and do all my fades in and out there but this will save some steps later on as long as it fades in and out smoothly. Thanks, Torrey

Glad you found it useful. I found that once I had played around with these features and became comfortable, it was much quicker than the time it takes to export out to a DAW. It also makes it easy to try various button endings and fades before making a final decision.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
