After a HD crash, I reinstalled BIAB. Now when I Browse Styles with info, it pops up the "For first time use" message, and needs to rebuild the style list. I suspect I have a directory location wrong in my settings so BIAB doesn't find the style list. I can't seem to locate where I need to make that change though. Help!?!?
thx,
Mr D
(Note: BIAB 2012 version)

What do you mean by "with info"? Is this popup occurring over and over?

If it is not occurring over and over I could be wrong but I suspect you have not don't anything wrong. I think BIAB is just building its style index for the first time. The index is so if can find styles by category(etc) faster. I have to assume that they delay this process until the user has made their purchase because they do not know what styles you will have until that time. Having said that you mention directories. I have always left everything as the default and now I am searching for where I can change directories. I went to the file menu where this type of thing is most likely to be and discovered "File Utilities". I can't see anything in here that would effect your concern but I did learn a few things that could be very useful :-)

From the Styles menu, the option is "Browse Styles with info..."

The first time you do this, it needs to rebuild the stylepicker list. But it does this every time. Before my crash, it just popped up the existing list.

It seems that it is not saving the stylepicker list, of it can't find it if it is. I wonder if there is a preference indicating where such files are located in my BIAB folder.

Try running BIAB As Administrator.

Not sure what you mean by "as Administrator". Is that a BIAB setting, or running my computer in Admin mode?

Oh, I made a fresh purchase of BIAB 2016 after having bought BIAB 2012 maybe 4 years earlier. I have BIAB 2016 on my main desktop and on my notebook for my jam group. However without realizing it I had left BIAB 2012 on my slower desktop machine. 2016 does not have a styles menu (they removed it and now it has a styles button which is way better IMHO). That is why I did not understand the "with info" part. I checked my BIAB 2012 version and it has what you say.

I am in BIAB 2012 now. I am analyzing the message that comes up. There is a part of the message that says (including ones that you have made). I suspect that BIAB will be smart enough to detect that you have made new styles and if you have it will ask this message again since they need to be included in the new index. So have you made any new ones? If not (assuming you have been answering Yes) I think that message occurring over and over is likely a bug??? If you are answering No it will probably keep asking it over and over. It kind of makes no sense to ask it actually. It should just go ahead and update the index every time it discovers new styles (purchased or user made) but it should tell you so you know why it is taking a bit longer.

it means that you use Windows File Explorer to navigate to BBW.EXE, right-click, and select Run As Administrator. This is different from any setting in BIAB, or Admin Mode. Give it a try.

John,
I say Yes to rebuild the stylepicker list, it brings up the entire list, and I select one for my song. Then, I repeat to select another style, and it has to rebuild the list again. It didn't use to do that (before my hard drive crashed) after the first "build". It would just display to style list.

I don't add or create new styles, I am simply displaying the list to pick another one. It never used to rebuild the list, just display it, so I think there must be a setting which tells BIAB where to find it, and that setting is wrong or not saving.

Ultimately, it's only 30 seconds out of my life, but it's just annoying, and it never did it before.

This leads to some questions.

Does it go back to having the bug if it is run as normal or did it get fixed by that one run as admin?
Why did running as admin it do it?
If admin makes BIAB work properly more often then how can we set it up to run as admin all the time?
Is there any good reason not to run BIAB as admin all the time?
If there is no reason to avoid running as admin why is it not internally programmed to run as admin all the time (nothing special on our part)?

Mr. D, very good.

John, I think we have settled that there are enough reasons that BIAB should be Run As Administrator, but this is a Windows setting, not something BIAB can dictate. More specifically, I don’t think we needed to do it until Windows 10. Note the original problem was about BIAB 2012. I’ll bet that was running in Windows 7. When the pc was upgraded to 10, at some point the privileges were probably set. Then in the reinstall, it had to be redone. If Windows 10 is new after the crash, that would explain what Mr. D experienced.

Perhaps the installation instructions should emphasize the need to Run As Administrator.

Okay thanks Matt. I guess we just have to remember this simple pair of rules. If something is strange or if in doubt try running as administrator and additionally if that does not work while running as administrator try also resetting to factory defaults. So far I have seen it fix at least 4 things I never would have guessed would be fixed this way.

Interesting you should mention Windows 7. I just replaced a gradually failing disk drive on my Windows 7 machine and I am working at installing software again. Getting the three machines to talk to each other over the home network (in all directions) is a nightmare with most of the answers coming from YouTube videos. win XP and win 10 seem much easier. The trick to all this is keying in a search string that is the exact error message.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
