Hi all,
This is definitely a beginner's question :-)

When I save a song, can it save the Mute State on the mixer?
For example, I want to drop out the Bass and Guitar when playing a song - but when reloading the (saved) file it doesn't retain these settings.

I notice it does save & retain the volume levels for the Bass,Guitar,Piano etc (although not Midi thru interestingly) so I can set them to 0, but is there a better way?
It's much more convenient to be able to mute/unmute rather than using the sliders

Many thanks for any pointers

ShaunH

To achieve this you should use Bar Settings.

At the bar you want the mute to start, right click and chose Bar Settings from the drop down, alternatively, highlight the bar and press f5 on your keyboard.
Both will bring up the Bar Settings menu.

On this menu, the drop down to the left of the instrument name gives various options, one of which is Mute.

To start the instrument playing again, bring up Bar Settings at the relevant bar and chose Back to Normal.

It would be worthwhile to get familiar with the various Bar Settings options as they can be very useful.

Hope this helps

Hi Shaun,

Welcome to the forums.

As mentioned above, bar settings is a good approach. The 'mute' within those settings behaves differently than the 'mute' on the mixer.

Also.... While the mute status on the mixer does not save, the volume settings do. So if you don't want the Bass and Guitar, you could also set their volumes to zero and save.

Regards,
Noel

Shaun, welcome to the forum. As mentioned, use one of the workarounds (I set volume to zero). Saving the mute status has been requested in the Wishlist Forum here, but not for awhile. I think it’s always useful to see what a new user finds odd, and I agree this is.

Worth mentioning again that using the Mute function from the Song Settings does retain that Mute setting when the file is saved.

To mute a track from playing during an entire song, open Song Settings (F5) and select the track or tracks you want to be muted during the song and at the First Bar (Bar 1) select Mute for those tracks.

Save the file and the tracks selected to be muted will be retained with the save and those tracks will be muted for the entire song.

Very good point, Charlie. The Wishlist would be for the mixer mute status to save.

EDIT: I just created a Wishlist post on this. Feel free to give it some support if you agree.

Sorry to be pedantic, but F5 opens Bar Settings.
Song Settings is a different menu located to the left of the mixer box.

Hi again,

Sorry reply to only my own post - but there were so many quick and helpful answers - I didn't know which to respond to ... :-)

Many thanks for the F5 tip - there are plenty of options for me there!

And also thanks for the warm welcome - strangely enough, I am a long time BIAB owner - but I'm definitely a beginner!

I'll be making some time to do a lot of browsing through the forums.

Thanks,

Shaun

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
