I have something weird going on with BIAB 2018.

My mate is running 2018 Pro and I am running 2018 Ultra.

He has created a song and the style in Pro comes up as Reggae_3.sty and when I load the .SGU file on my PC it comes up in my Ultra Pak as Reggae_2 which sounds totally different and in the style picker menu I only have Reggae_1 & Reggae_2

I can load Reggae_3 "from disk" and I also find many more Reggae styles there than just 1 & 2

I did a base install of 2018 on a spare laptop and left it in demo mode and it was fine.

Makes collaboration rather difficult when we share files, he sends me the SGU and I convert it to .WAV and load it into the DAW so we can add our instruments and voices.

Any ideas because it is rather frustrating

Hi Dave,

I find myself wondering if this might be a mix up between Realstyles and MIDI styles.

I have been installing updated versions of BIAB over the top of older versions since 2006. In addition, as far as I can recall, I've bought all bonus packages along the way. My thoughts are that this should mean that I have every style.

When I filter the style list for 'reggae_' (without inverted commas, I get....

  • REGGAE_2
  • REGGAE_3

These are MIDI-only styles that were released in the mid-year update of 2002. I do not have any REGGAE_1 MIDI style.

In addition, when I filter the style list for 'reggae1' and 'reggae2' separately, I find...

  • _REGGAE1
  • _REGGAE2

These are Realstyles (i.e. use Realtracks) and were released with the end-of-year update in 2010. This is seen by the fact that these styles' names start with an underscore as the first character.

With the above in mind, is it possible that you friend has been using a MIDI style to create his songs and you've been looking for Realstyles to use in its place?

It would help a great deal towards solving your problem if you could use Dropbox or equivalent to post a download link to the song from your friend. Forum members could then have a look at things a little more closely. (If you want to keep the song private, just delete the chords and melody, save it as a new name and then post a link to that newly named file.)

Regards,
Noel

Thanks for the reply Noel.

I only have 2018 and have never had another version and the same is the case for Max.

Since I located the style from disk another one has magically appeared, my BIAB installation is on my I drive so everything is in the default named folders on that drive.

Weird thing now is that another of the songs that Max has written in BIAB has DEPOTRIG.sty ( train beat ) and I had done the same song using BIGRIG.sty also train beat but adds steel to the sound.

If I change Max's arrangement to my style the steel is not there.

Not to worry we are working through these one at a time, I play guitar and bass and we also have a pedal steel playing mate so it's not an issue as we want to use as much of our own instrumentation as we can.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
