Mom kept the radio tuned to WMFG in Hibbing, Minnesota and this tune by Tommy Dorsey awakened me every day through thirteen years of school. Now fond memories - then, cruel and unusual punishment.

I'm sure Matt and Notes can name it easily.

We often talk about our positive musical influences and not our negative ones. I now believe that this exposure has resulted in my hesitation to listen and enjoy this genre of music.

It was like expecting a refreshing drink from the garden hose then someone melliciously turns it on full-bore.

When I was at home and it was a school day I use to wake my daughters up by playing +++ "In The Air Tonight" +++ by Phil Collins. I remixed the song so the intro was quieter than the original while the drum break was as loud as it could be. The key was to get up BEFORE the drum part played. Never failed to quickly get them out of bed! grin I didn't do it for thirteen years though. cry

Another good wake-up song was +++ "Everybody" +++ by The Backstreet Boys.

Enjoyed this, but more of a Glenn Miller fan myself.

It changed over the course of 12 years. Particularly during those 3 years I spent in the 9th grade....

Not to date myself here - but wow, my grandpa used to play this tune and others by Glenn Miller around the house 15 years ago or something.

Are we sure this tune is by Tommy Dorsey? I'm super certain Glenn Miller did this one - correct me if I'm wrong smile I think the uploader on YouTube may have accidentally mislabeled it. Honest mistake!

They both did it. Many of the big bands did the same songs, often to compete with each other as to who did it best. I remember seeing the documentary between the play-off between the Bennie Goodman Orchestra and Duke Ellington's Orchestra...Ellington won.

When we started playing the "senior circuit" (for lack of a better name) in the 1980s we did a lot of Dorsey, Miller, Shaw, Ellington, Basie, Goodman and other songs. They were fun to play and when I got my Atari computer (in 1986), a challenge for me to sequence the backing tracks for. Especially with the primitive sequencers of the day. I learned a lot about MIDI continuous Controllers and got to apply a lot of what I learned in school about harmony and arranging.

We never played "Sunrise Serenade" but the Dorsey song we did the most was "So Rare".

I didn't have a "wake up" song, as we didn't wake to the radio, but the old Miami AM radio station WQAM used to close the night with Ray Peterson's version of "Goodnight My Love" (originally done by Jesse Belvin).

My parents, especially my father who played violin, trumpet, uke and later organ were record collectors. We had plenty of big-band music as well as a few other genres. As a small kid I especially liked Spike Jones.

But those were my parents generation's songs. As much as I liked them, I bought rock and roll. And I had a leaning towards the R&B side of rock music as opposed to the Country side. But when AM was the only game in town, we just listened to everything the kids were supposed to listen to. Elvis, Holly, Coasters, Clovers, Jackie Wilson, Everly Bros., Duane Eddy, and as time went by The Beatles, the opening of FM Radio when in the early days of "underground radio" we could hear things like Fever Tree, Spooky Tooth, Blue Cheer, Incredible String Band, Zeppelin (before they were played on pop stations), Bloodwyn Pig, Moody Blues, Vanilla Fudge and so on.

We used to have a nice Classical Radio station as well, WTMI with full Symphonies played and educated DJs, and at night China Valles would do an excellent jazz program.

Sadly the radio doesn't play much jazz around here and the Classic is classical to sleep by. I remember the DJ saying "Here is the 3rd movement, the Menuetto from Beethovan's first symphony, which he wrote before he got too wild". Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Before he got too wild? For me Classical music begins to catch my ears with Beethovans 3rd. Not that Mozart and Bach weren't certified geniuses. It's just that it doesn't speak to my soul.

Sadly, we don't get to play those older songs anymore. I like playing the newer stuff a lot, but sometimes miss that side of my expression. We are going to play for a 100th birthday party next month so it will be good to mix in a few standards. String Of Pearls, Moonglow, What A Diff'rence, In The Mood, So Rare, Night And Day, Satin Doll, Take The A Train, Chattanooga Choo, and your friends, it's time to wake up!

I could listen to St Louis Blues March (Glenn Miller's version of St Louis Blues - less W.C. Handy, more Sousa, but swingin' nevertheless), Tuxedo Junction (also by Miller), as well as Opus One by Tommy Dorsey all day. Those songs just do something to me when I hear them.

Our band played Glen Miller's "In The Mood" and, to see if the audience was asleep, we would announce that we were about to play "In The Nude". That usually got them to sit up.

Others that I still remember were "Caravan"; "Blue Skirt Waltz"; "Five Foot Two"; and other big band hits.

Our drummer was phenomenal. He contacted me recently to say that a botched carpal tunnel surgery had ended his playing. So sad.

Don,

A lot of drummers end up with carpal tunnel in the wrists as well as back issues.

Carpal tunnel is one of the reasons why good drum teachers spend so much time and attention on how to hold and use sticks, mallets or brushes. If you hold them correctly there is a lot less chance of carpel tunnel developing.

It's hard to maintain good back posture while sitting on a drum seat or throne with no back support for hours on end daily.

Jim,

Eldon is from my era where such things were either unknown or untaught. Teachers were not trained to spot and identify dyslexia so I have suffered reading comprehension problems to this very day.

I have suggested that he buy BIAB and learn the bohdran or various hand drums that don't require repetitive wrist action. Unfortunately, it seems to have destroyed his interest in music entirely. Such a shame.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
