Watching you

This song was posted years ago. It's my favorite solo project but I always thought it needed better mixing and mastering.
I spent several hours doing very precise editing in Cubase (not pleasant since I have severe RSI). Added compression with Ozone 7 and several other plug-ins. I experimented with all kinds of EQ settings until I come up with this result, which is a lot better than the initial version.

This song is about as a "singer-songwriter" as it gets for me. When writing it I had just one thing in mind: dynamics (and Brent has a whole lot to do with that ;-) )

Hope you like it, comments are encouraged.

Watching you

I knew you'd run
I can see you trying
you never wanted this
never really knew
never really thought it could become like this
that I could be like this, this mean

I know you will run
no matter what I try to do
no matter what I'd say
letting go so easily
there's no looking back

I listen closely to your heartbeat next to mine
as you're trying to leave the room
getting rid of this
getting rid of me
trying to leave my life

I know you were right
cause this is getting old
I'm getting old
give power to old lovers
to leave things behind

I know you will run
no matter what I try to do
no matter what I'd say
letting go so easily
there's no looking back

Rob,

Your hard work has certainly paid off! This beautiful song has such a crystal clear sound and production! Your work with the supporting strings is exceptional and the vocal is great as always with your work! Thanks, Torrey

Beautiful arrangement and the vocals were just stunning(the song reminded me of early Dan Fogelberg).

You have crystal clear mix - (hope it didn't aggravate the RSI too much)and some lovely string sounds to top it off.

Rob,

The production on this song is really outstanding. One of your best vocals - some of those notes that you reach are unreal - great, great work.

Rob,

I agree with all that has been said so far.

The acoustic guitar is BIG. Your vocal is stellar - beautifully sung and nicely processed. The supporting instruments, all well placed. Good mix.

Beautifully done.

Really outstanding vocals on this Rob.

Mission accomplished. A great job all around, and a superb mix, but of all things I really loved those vocals.

Absolutely a stellar song and top notch production on this song.

I have always enjoyed your music. It's always a pleasant surprise anticipating where you're going with the chords in the various sections of the song.

Nice work on this one smile Your vocal performance here is incredible. There is so much power in the guitars too. Really nice mixing job as well - the whole tune sounds fluid and really flows well.

Great job - thanks for sharing!

Excellent arrangement and mix, I really like the sound of the acoustic guitars and the strings. And of course your voice carries the whole song beautifully.

What superb use of RT's to so well support the vocal.

And the vocal...man, we know you have a wonderful voice but what a way to showcase it!

We're glad you got singer-songwriter on this as the result is a sparse production that has that open/airy feel that lets every vocal nuance shine through.

Enjoyed it much!

Wow! What a beautiful song. Such heartfelt lyrics. The simplicity of the instrumental accompaniment really lets your vocals shine. There is so much emotion in the vocals that really make this song so amazing. Great job on the remixing.

Hello, Rob

Really beautiful song!
I entirely agree with Tom.
The fantastic vocal really carries this.
The acoustic guitar sounds perfect.
Just beautiful with a pro mix to support it.
The modulation from D major to C# minor is very nice and effective.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

To those I haven't thanked yet: THANK YOU! for the very positive comments.
Currently I don't have much time to thank each of you individually as I'm very busy with my "Dragon NaturallySpeaking Add-ons project".

I realize that there's probably not a single soul on the forum that uses Speech Recognition but in case anyone's interested, here is a Promo Video

Ember, about the original version, you can find it here

The quality difference may not be immediately audible on a non HiFi speaker system. The differences are subtle and probably mostly noticeable when listening to the main acoustic guitar RT (which has a lot more compression and clarity) and the nuances of the vocals.

Sorry to hear about the RSI. Hopefully Dragon works out well. I wouldn't even want to imagine making extensive edits in a DAW with severe hand/wrist pain. frown

As always, the singing is emotional and evocative, and the mix is perfect.

Rob,

Very pretty tune, the guitar work really resonates and helps pull the listener in. But the terrific vocals really carry this one; love the softness of the upper vocals. Tremendous effort and great listen. Enjoyed every bit of it.

Best regards,

Deej

A super strong vocal backed by the perfect RTs. Those MIDI strings were nice touch. Your hard work paid off as the mix was spot on!

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
