Has anyone managed to export midi chords from Scaler into BIAB yet? I like to be able to audition chords live, it would be really cool to be able to work this together.
Ok, yes you can.

Brookes,

If Scaler saves files' chord information as MIDI, this would certainly be able to imported into BIAB.

Some other things that you may or may not be aware of in BIAB, too, are....

In relation to auditioning chords... BIAB has a few ways to do this.

1. SHIFT+ENTER
If the cursor is placed on the chord sheet so that the cell containing a chord is highlighted, BIAB will play that chord if you press SHIFT+ENTER (I find this very useful).

2. Chord Builder
See IMAGE 1 below.

To enter into Chord Builder, right-click on the chordsheet and select 'Chord Builder'.

a) Select the chord's root name (#1 on Image 1)

b) Select a slash bass (if any) (#2)

c) Select chord type (#3) or, if one of the more advanced types of chord is required click on #4 to go to the chord menu

d) Press 'Play" (#5)

3. All-MIDI Styles
When working out a chord progression, rather than use Realstyles (with Realtracks), disable the auto-substitute MIDI styles for Realstyles option and load a MIDI style. MIDI styles will generate in a second or less and being playing almost instantaneously. This makes them perfect for testing purposes.

I nearly always find an appropriate MIDI style and use that for building chord progressions when I'm in the early stages of creating a song.

To disable Auto-Substitution of Realstyles for MIDI styles, right click on the chordsheet, select 'Song Settings' and then deselect "Allow Styles Aliases (auto-substitution of style) for this song".

4. Finding Chords for a Melody
If you go to the Edit menu and then scroll down to the "Chords" option, the Reharmonist will find chords for an existing melody.

That is... "Edit | Chords | Auto-Generate Chord Reharmonization"

Hope this helps.
Noel

Thank you Noel, very helpful, BIAB has so many menus, I forget where things are. I did import from Scaler, using midi import, rather than trying to drag and drop.

Brookes,

For the chord builder to work on the Windows version, there needs to be an unmuted instrument on the Piano track and the Bass track.

Does that help?

Regards,
Noel

Hi Brookes,

Where exactly are you clicking in the Chord Builder?

If I just click on a Root, I hear the bass note, but I hear a full chord if I click on an extension, or the Play button.

Also, which version and build of Band-in-a-Box are you running? You can find out by clicking on the Band-in-a-Box menu, then About Band-in-a-Box.

Thanks
Kent

hi, Im using the upgraded 2018 for Mac. I still only hear the bass note, even when I click on the extensions, or play. Piano and bass are unmuted in the mixer.

Brookes,

It sounds like your piano track could be the one at fault.

BIAB has two systems for naming the tracks.

One... the track automatically takes its name from the instrument that is assigned to it.

Two... the track uses BIAB's original static naming which remains unchanged whatever the instrument that's added.

It's the Piano track in "Two", the static naming, that needs to be (a) unmuted, (b) have an instrument attached to it and (c) the volume turned up.

The original BIAB Piano track is the one immediately below the Bass track in the mixer.

If you want BIAB to show the original names (which is how I run the program), there will be settings similar to the ones I"ve highlighted on the image below that need deactivating. (The image relates to the Windows version of the program.)

Regards,
Noel

P.S. BIAB 2018 has a fantastic collection of Realtracks and Supermidi tracks! I've been been really enjoying playing around with them.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
