I have had a playback issue with Sforzando 32 and 64 versions since they were included with Biab. The issue predates the WAS upgrade and only effects the standalone versions. It isn't an issue when Sforzando runs as a VSTi within Biab. Supermidi files play correctly and I can use the plug in, choose a patch and the program runs successfully.

I have recently been experimenting with programming SFZ samples and here is where my issue arises. When I bring a SFZ file into Sforzando in standalone mode for testing, the program recognizes the file, maps it to the keys at the bottom of the window but no matter what the SFZ file WAV is, I only get a buzzing sound. If I open Biab, go to plugins, navigate to the SFZ file, Sforzando plays the file. I get the same results with both standalones on my computer, 32 bit and 64 bit. I don't think it's related to my sound card because the situation existed prior to the recent WAS upgrade. I have attached a short video that I duplicated creating a SFZ file and even such a simple example doesn't work in standalone mode.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Charlie,

If you haven't done so, you may want to check out some of the Plogue Sforzando "How To Make A SFZ" video tutorials.

+++ First Tutorial +++

+++ Second Tutorial +++

Actually I'm not sure why but your link matches the first tutorial link I provided. Provide a link to your example SFZ file along with the wave file(s) your example uses. Then we can take a look at what you're doing.

SFZ files comes up every now and then. There are a number of sample player type synths that use them. Sforzando and Dimension Pro are a couple of examples.

You first need a number of good samples of the sound you wish to play. You then create an SFZ file in a text editor that tells the sample player what to mod with the samples. Below is a copy of what I wrote before

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I think maybe I should explain a bit better with an example. I wanted to be able to add bits I can no longer handle using my own telecaster. I had to be able write the part in midi format. I played a series of notes which I recorded. Then created an sfz file which I could then tell Dimension Pro to find. Then I could use Dimension Pro to read the midi part. It sounded like my guitar and it can play the parts I now have difficulty with. Here is a portions to the sfz file.

//-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
// sfz Definition File
// Version 2
// My Tele Restrung based on the Cakewalk Script
//
//
//-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

<region> sample=reStrings\E2.flac key=e2 lokey=c2
<region> sample=reStrings\F2.flac key=f2 tune=-25
<region> sample=reStrings\G2.flac key=g2 lokey=f#2 tune=-12
<region> sample=reStrings\A2.flac key=a2 lokey=g#2 tune=3
<region> sample=reStrings\B2.flac key=b2 lokey=a#2 tune=5
,
,
,
<region> sample=reStrings\F5.flac key=f5 tune=-2
<region> sample=reStrings\G5.flac key=g5 lokey=f#5 tune=1
<region> sample=reStrings\A5.flac key=a5 lokey=g#5 tune=4
<region> sample=reStrings\B5.flac key=b5 lokey=a#5 tune=-1
<region> sample=reStrings\C6.flac key=c6 tune=-4

Basically it tells the synth where to find the sample reStrings\sample. What to do with the samples. What keys do what key=? lokey=?? The range of the sound. One can also fine tune the samples tune = ? To set the note a few centimes.

You can do a lot more this is a simple use but sort of shows the use.

Tony

There are many more op codes see http://www.sfzformat.com/legacy/ This gives more details.

I have a book on Cakewalk Synths by Simon Cann who really goes into the SFZ stuff. There are also templates about somewhere but I cannot remember where. Cakewalk had them and also an SFZ tool but that was some time ago.

Well Tony, it's actually worth a lot to me. You are already doing 90% of what I'm attempting to do. You've provided a wonderful explanation as well as a great example.

What I suggest doing different from your example of getting your good samples of your Telecaster to use with midi notes and have your track play exactly what you want, I plan to sample RealTracks and do the same procedure with them. This will allow specific RT riffs to be merged with a project RealTrack and the midi generated track will sound the same as the Real Track since the samples originate from the RT itself.

RealTracks and BIAB are pristine for this type of programming. BIAB can generate dozens or more RealTrack versions of an instrument providing hours of high quality, isolated audio over any chord chart, in any key or tempo I want.

Thanks to you and Jim for the examples and other reference material. I think they will be very helpful. Jim, your links are to the same one I linked to in the OP, but I somehow managed to start my file in the middle of the clip...

Here is a tutorial video created by PGMusic several years ago giving a simple demonstration and tutorial how programming and generating the midi/audio hybrid track works. Just replace the Coyote midi patch with Sforzando VST and RT audio samples.

Replacing Real Tracks with song specific Riffs

BIAB's notation features and the recently added feature of XLM import and export enhance the ease of finding and importing the notation for creating accurate midi notes.

Charlie, for doing a small replacement part as per the video you could do this fairly easily. Just have the realtrack play a few notes about where you need them. Then cut a few notes say C, E, G, and A. Check these notes in a tuner. This would give you an octave that would sound pretty much spot on. Simply create an SFZ file to say where the samples are (it is best to store the SFZ in the same folder as the samples that way if you move the samples the SFZ still points to the right place.). Then you tell the sample player where the SFZ file is. I used Dimension Pro in my experiment as a part of the learning exercise for me was how to manipulate Dimension where I could easily set the ADSR sound envelope how I wanted it to make it fit the part even better.

I wish you well in the exercise. Let me know if I can help.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
