RayC. Thanks so much for sending your mix of One Piece. I like it very much. The vocal is very clear. On the harmonies, you may have noticed that they were cloned from the load vocal (using Melodyne) and then duplicated. When I duplicate I generally pan them out left and right and move the one over by a few cents so that they dont cancel each other out. Interesting with the mono mix but you can immediately hear the difference with the stereo one.

Robert - Thanks for your kind words. I also like Ray's mix over Ogi's (and mine for that matter).

Noel - thanks you for your detailed analysis. It is something I will be more aware of going forward smile

DeeJ - Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it.

Shigeki Adachi - Thank you! I cant even remember how I came up with the chord progression.... It was back in Feb already and the songs tend to tumble out during FAWM smile

Bob - Thanks for the ongoing support. I appreciate it.

Joanne, this is simply one of your best to date. You've produced some great lyrics and placed them over one of your best melodies ever.

About the mix. Technically, I agree with Ray and Herb and their initial comments. Technically, with a name like Ogie the Beat, I assume Ogie specializes in modern beat type music so a heavy low end is not unexpected nor is it necessarily wrong.

A mix is a personal choice and a connection with a song. I found your mix to be the most intimate and best connected to the song of all the mixes presented so far. It's my favorite.

This song has a lot of potential and I really enjoyed my listen.

Ah Charlie. Thanks for that you are a star. I use Ogi to try and make my songs sound "more modern" and he has done an excellent job with some of my other songs. He has also used my vocals and BIAB music stems to make some dubstep remixes..nog all (that is a Afrikaans saying for "and all that Jazz").

Bwt, John Scunziano wrote the lyrics as part of a FAWM challenge to use a whole bunch of words in a song.

Music is very subjective but I tend toward Ray's mix. I think he separated the instruments a little better.

Herb's mix was also excellent but somewhat more clustered. I may be unconventional in my preferences but Ray's mix is how I prefer to listen.

Your vocal is solid gold, my lady.

I had to go back and check....BUT.... I haven't posted a mix for this yet as I don't have the time to work on it.

OK...so here's my mix for this.

ONE PIECE

And here's what I did.

First off, I dropped 2 of the vocal tracks that were harmonies since they were simply cloned duplicates, well, 2 of them. I used 8 of the 10 tracks. The harmonies I did use are low in the first chorus, and only part of them are used and rise in the second.

One guitar at a time until the end using volume automation to switch between them.

Nothing fancy, just trying to showcase the Joan Baez-esk vocals. Amazing voice. I'd love to have been able to be at the console for the recording because there are a few places where there are digital overs that ...well, take it over the top of 0dB.

Hope you like this Joanne.

Herb! That is amazing. You have done an incredible job with this mix. Attention to detail I think is the key (and also a lot of experience). I seriously need to work on my recording of vocals. I think if I remember correctly I recorded this (under time pressures as FAWM always is) with my Samson USB mic and not my rode condenser mic and audio interface. Please send me the wav file... thanks

If you like it I consider it a success. I'll send the wave to you in a bit. Maybe by tomorrow.

The important thing is to take care with the vocal tracks. There are digital overs in them and it's audible especially in my headphones. I understand the rush of FAWM.... but if you're going to do a release of a song, it's a good idea to back up, take your time and record the vocal tracks again, better, cleaner, with headroom.

It is what it is.... beautiful vocal performance regardless.

Herb's mix is lovely, crystal clear and with seamless automated transitions between instruments. The main vocal is supported by a minimalist arrangement & therefor necessarily narrow sound stage.
The vocal is the focus of that mix and it shines, though the "peaking" is a little more obvious as a result.
It does seem to be "mastered" a little loud in my headphones but I've not had a chance to listen elsewhere.
As Herb recommended Joanne, look after your vocal tracks because they are wonderful. A USB mic will be harder to manage in that respect. The better the AD conversion the better preserved the performance.
Herb,
I love you work - stellar mix!

Cheers

That Musicoin site is weird. Only a couple of inches of it ever show on my screen. When I push the play button, it disappears and the song does not play. In this day and age, one would think they might fix that stuff - before ever presenting the site to the public...

It is cool that others are pitching in to do different mixes. I listened to Ray's and Herb's and yours. I prefer yours over the others. The vocals in your mix have a warmth to them. In Herb's version, there is a "harshness" from too much high EQ. The reverb and delay is an interesting addition, though overdone a bit for this type song. Y'all might "split the difference" - your version could use a bit more reverb. And Herb's guitar mix is at a better place - yours is a bit too loud - and he has "thinned" it out a bit (again with more high EQ).

An interesting thread, for sure.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
