Does anyone use BIAB to create demos to pitch song to industry pros? If so, any success stories? If not, why?

This is a really complicated subject but I will try and make it as simple as a can.

If you are speaking "pitching" and "industry pros" you are generally talking Nashville because that is where most pitching goes on. As a regional coordinator with NSAI, I can go offline with you and tell you more about the scene but it would take way too long in a post.

But see and check out: www.nashvillesongwriters.com

Short version: Most artists are writing their own stuff with their producer.

Slightly longer version: if you happen to get lucky through NSAI or you know insiders there you can successfully pitch to the publishers or labels.

Successful "pitch demos" fall into two categories:

1.) A great acoustic guitar track and off the chart vocal by a pro. Two tracks. Impeccable, blast your face off, jaw dropping songwriting. "The Climb" which Miley Cyrus cut was one of those songs and is a good reference.

The two words I hear used most of the time in the context of successful outsider songs is "emotional" and "authentic"--as in "that song took me on an emotional journey" and "dang that sounded SO AUTHENTIC" and was "RIPPED STRAIGHT OUT OF THE SONGWRITER'S HEART."

When you hear these successful songs sitting in on pitch sessions, there is no denying that they are the real thing. They don't song like copycat songs. They are not overproduced. They are not trying too hard. They just make your jaw drop open and sound incredibly "real." And almost always two tracks. Guitar and vocal.

They are looking for the song not the production.

2.) A great song that is exactly the same level of quality that you would find on a new Luke Bryan song.

There is no in between.

Therefore, your best bet if you are going to pitch is to go with #1. BIAB can give you great tracks for that, but the song has to be incredible, and the vocals and presentation have to be perfect. The mix, EQ, rhythm, pocket, attitude, style, vibe--everything has to be there and it has to excite the most jaded people on the face of the earth. People who have heard it all.

So yes, Band in Box can be used, but you have to steer away from "productions" unless you actually go to Nashville and spend $5,000 and they aren't really interested in your production anyway. They just want the song.

Hope that makes sense. If you need more info you can PM me and we can talk.

It is a tricky, tricky subject.

But those are the basics.

Also, there are a number of people on this forum who have placed music for film and licensing using BIAB and that speaks for itself, because sync licensing people don't push to music supervisors and music supervisors don't buy unless the song meets all professional criteria and can compete with the most polished material out there.

People on this forum have used BIAB successfully to do that.

Herb Hartley is one and there are others.

What David said. Yup... you generally have to be in Nashville and know the artist or someone close to the artist, to get cuts.

Aside from that....

YES.... you can make Broadcast Quality music with BB and a few other tools to sweeten it a bit and get cuts in TV shows and movies as I, and a few others here have done. I've gotten several cuts into TV shows and movies using BB as the basis of the music.
They have been instrumental songs.
Songs with lyrics have to meet a whole different level of excellence. The music must be first class and high bar, as well as having a singer that sounds like a pro, and of course the lyrics have to work for the scene it's playing behind.

BUT... yep. totally doable.

Hey Elliott,

I will send you a PM.

I do most of my stuff in BIAB and use Xtra Styles and play a lot of my own instruments on top of a BIAB bed.

So, I will pm you now.

Thanks for the nice comments.

There used to be a member here named Mac. Mac wrote "jingles" for commercials using Biab, if that helps?

There are quite a few of us around here who are having a lot of success in getting music to music supervisors for exactly that purpose using band in a box.

That's kind of what band in a box is for.

Herb can supply you with some samples, I'm sure, because he has had a lot of stuff placed.

Go to songtradr set up a free acct. and friend/follow me.

I will show you a ton of BIAB stuff.

A lot of people here are doing it. Come on and join the fun. You will also learn a lot by listening to what other people are doing.

I think you're asking David..... but I will chime in on this because we both tend to work in similar manner.

All of the music is started and often finished in BB/RB with, in my case, everything being audio tracks in the end. I add some of my own live tracks on guitar, sometimes on Bass, and sometimes on piano.

Band in a Box and the Real Track sound good but you can always make them sound better by using some of the production tools available, such as Ozone.

Everything I do is polished up by Ozone before it gets exported from my DAW where I do my mixing and production work. The result is a broadcast quality file that can be used "as-is" by film and TV.

I'm on FB as Herb Hartley. Send me a friend request and we can chat.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
