The Plogue Sforzando +++ Plogue Website +++ website has some good ones. Also, try a web search using the terms "ARIA Engine sounds" or "Sforzando sounds". ARIA is the name of the audio engine used in Sforzando.

yep a lot of free out here in www land.

this is worth a look

http://www.dskmusic.com/

but for a few bucks ($25) when you buy the DSK HQ pak (you can get in one, some or ALL formats for that $25) the extra 950 sfz's you get are worth the $25 by themselves

EDIT

THIS IS A BIG PS and is no offense to our resident expert on how to squeeze more out of ever app he comes across with programming, editing, use 3rd party free apps, etc. Mr PIPELINE himself, but

While Sforzando is nice for one sound at a time for each instantiation there are still free multi-timbral sound font players out there for those on a “no,” “low (as in Kinks song - anyone remember the song?)”, or moderate budget. Especially if buying multi-hundred dollar ROMplers and/or Synths (PS NI Komplete 11 is currently on half-price sale) have to wait a bit - so free and near free are nice to know about.

There is the 8 part Phenome. ( I never heard of it until today, I don’t go searching on this stuff very often, so I’m sure this is old news to others here. Since its new to me I just downloaded and di a fast test it works as indicated ) - not full 16 part but you could bring up two instanitations, its FREE

TX16wx (also free but they don’t mind a donations  )
https://www.tx16wx.com/

The free SynthFont1 (1.724)
http://www.synthfont.com/Downloads.html

Coolsoft virtual midi synth (it acts as a multi-timbral external MIDI device )

https://coolsoft.altervista.org/en/virtualmidisynth

I’m sure there are a few others as well

Keep in mind that, despite the similarity in the names, "SoundFont" (.sf) and "sfz" (.sfz) are two different animals.

SoundFont was designed by Creative Labs as a portable sample format that worked well with their sound card technologies. It was pretty big back in the day when Creative Labs was big. Now, it's pretty much obsolete, but there are plenty of SoundFont libraries around.

SFZ was created by Plogue, and is a (mostly) open format that can be edited in plain text. It's still being used by a number of companies, such as Garritan.

The sforzando player can convert SoundFont files into .sfz files, but how well it works depends on what sort of features it uses. If it's mostly sample playback, the conversion will often be quite good.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

There are free options for creating a new sf2 file for sForzando to convert also, if you want to 'roll yer own'.
I think polyphone is one that creates a sf2 file from samples ..

I created a RockEven sf2 from RD wave samples and converted to an sfz pretty easily so I could enhance a realdrum track with the same drum sound/samples via sForzando just as an experiment.

I've also just inserted these same samples in the DR-005 sample player which simply plays them and allows quick easy panning, volume per drum sample, etc (preferred method here), so as mentioned above there are sometimes easier/better ways to get to the end goal. Even when it is doable in sForzando.

DR-005 links have been posted here more than once. A quick search should find them.

Make your sound your own!
.. I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
