What exactly do you mean by running a vocalist through midi guitar?

If you have a VSTi that has a vocalist then just add it to BiaB and use your MIDI guitar controller as the input to the VSTi.

We need more information in able to better help.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

Sorry I see what you mean.

No its not a vst, but an external digitech vocalist live 2.

I have the chance to buy and I think I seen a post detailing how you run this from a midi guitar part in biab.

I was thinking that might have been what you were asking about....

So.... I would NOT do that in BiaB.

VST's tend to work better in a DAW where you can see the tracks and insert the midi source track easily.

I use Sonar, but I'm going to guess and say this could also be done easily in Real Band which you should have with BiaB.

Yes, I would be doing it in a daw either sonar or mixcraft.

I take it then that it can be done, is it a midi thru on the channel.

Ive got the guy on hold who is selling this.

I was really wanting it for external f/x, i.e. compressor, reverb etc, as I would like to try recording vocals with an external f/x.

yes it can be done. That's how the vocaloid synths and every other synth works. You install the synth and place it in your PLUG IN MANAGER....whatever that is called in the specific DAW you have. It then becomes available to use in the DAW and you select it when you do the "insert synth" function. You can then use your mouse or a midi keyboard to enter the notes you want the synth to play. I find using a midi keyboard is much easier, more accurate, and certainly faster than mousing the notes in to the source midi track.

It also works in a similar fashion if it's a hardware based synth. You send the midi track source data out and capture the hardware synth's audio output back to a track. Depending on the exact device..... there may be a learning curve to using it the way you want.

I thought something along the line of this.

I do run my ketron sd 1000, but I would only be looking to route the midi signal through the guitar track.

As you know it activates the key for backing vocals, although I don't know if the vocalist would be a useful edition.

Awww well need to decide time.

Hi Beatmaster,

This can be done in Band-in-a-Box.

In Band-in-a-Box, you'd go to Options - MIDI/Audio Driver Setup, uncheck "Use VST/DXi Synth", select the Digitech Vocalist as the MIDI Output Driver, and click OK.

Next, go to Options - Preferences - OutputCh. Check the "Output Chords" checkbox, and choose the channel the Digitech Vocalist receives chord changes on.

Now when you hit Play in BIAB, it'll send the Vocalist your chord changes so the harmonies work.

As long as you're using RealTrack styles, this should work perfectly.

If you want the option of using MIDI tracks, then you'll want to send MIDI to the SD 1000, run a MIDI cable from the SD 1000's Thru port to the Vocalists MIDI Input, and set the SD 1000 to send that selected channel through to the Vocalist without playing it (so the SD1000 doesn't play an extra track of sustained chords over your songs).

Hope this helps!

Hey Kent,

Your response would make a really good post to place in the Tips & Tricks section of the forum. It also would be nice write up in the FAQs. grin

Thanks for the detailed post.

That opens a few new avenues for me and not just for the vocalist.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
