I've thought about this for a while; but never really got into a conversation with anyone about this in person...let alone the number of people we would have on the forum.

Are there any strange habits you have as a result of being a musician that non-musicians don't have?

My example would be that I, being a drummer, typically will play all sorts of patterns in rhythm with my blinker sound while sitting at a red light. I'm not an "air drummer" really, just practicing patterns and making sure I stay in time with the blinker.

One little thing that keeps it interesting is I am well aware that our vehicles blinkers are at different tempos. smirk

I'm not sure if that common to many musicians?

So, lay 'em on me. I've been curious about this for a while.

Me too....and yes, I've done that also.

One of my quirks (from likely a plethora of them) is I don't use odd numbered bpm tempos when I'm recording an original song....it has to be an even bpm number.
I'm a bit odd that way.

Oh...one more odd 'habit' I have as a musician: I'm never late to practice or a gig.
I'm always on time....go figure.

Back to topic....

I've been a lead guitarist for over 50 years.

I have an unusual habit, I guess you could call it. Before my wife's health deteriorated so horribly bad, we used to dance a lot. On slow songs, I would form the fingering pattern for the chords of the song on her back with my left hand. Everytime the song we were dancing to changed chords, I'd move my fingers on the back of her shoulder to emulate that new chord. I never realized I did that until she pointed it out to me. I guess that's a bit unusual.

Alan

PS: HTL - I'm not a drummer but I sometimes find myself playing the air drums on songs with a strong rhythm or that are percussion based. If nothing else, it makes the drivers in the cars near me wonder which issues I've been diagnosed with!

Before each mixing event I construct a complete aluminum foil suit (with helmet) to wear through the session. I've found that older ones are mostly ineffective so while it runs up the grocery costs it does, on occasion, result in a decent mix. grin

Now Janice finger taps out rhythms all the time...even for commercials and she wakes up hearing them. That's why I bought her a cajon last year that she was immediately able to play well. smile Two of our recently licensed songs have her on cajon.

Often she's not even aware of it although I am when my arm or leg is serving as the percussion instrument!

That's interesting. Somehow, it doesn't surprise me. On certain programs I use I tend to have to have things exactly the same. If I have two tracks that are supposed to be the same. I can't have one at 87 and the other at 88...even though I can't tell the difference; aside from the darn number. So I understand.

For most people, not odd at all. For a musician...;)

I've actually heard of similar things from other guitarists and trumpet players.

I REALLY think you need to mic your arm and leg and have her play a few patterns, then use it in a song. You might be surprised how organic it could sound...you may think I'm kidding. I think it would be cool!

Hear her sing, it doesn't suprise me she is very rhythmic. You can hear it in her singing. She has A LOT of control over where you places her melodies for effect. I noticed that RIGHT away.

My strange habit was loading $3,000 USD of equipment into a $500 car and driving 60 miles (96.5 kilometers) to a job that paid $50!

What other profession would do that?

I have known other guitarists who did this. It never struck me as strange until just now when you mentioned it. I only know that because I saw them bring it out when we were at a music store.

But, if I may ask, why do you? Sounds fascinating to me.

Sorry to disagree with you Mario; but I think that is REALLY normal for a musician. If there is ONE norm to us, THAT has got to be it.

Strange would be getting paid $3000 for a gig you drove your $500 car 60 miles with $50 of equipment. If THAT happened; I think most musicians would think you to be a story teller; or blatant liar. laugh

Now, that musicians are strange is a given. It's in our nature.

Just checked my wallet: 9 picks (in the built-in zippered coin purse).

3 of the big Fender triangle bass picks, 4 dunlop max-grip 1.14mm, 1 dunlop nylon .38, one dunlop nylon .46 and one dunlop nylon .73 mm

Just thinned the herd!

But it does point out another weird habit I only buy wallets with coin purses built in.

I started as a drummer and I still play drums with my hands, analyzing rhythms or just having fun. It helps me write styles for BiaB.

Some people think the car has steering wheels, arm rests, side panels, and so on, I see bass drums, snares toms and so on.

Dozens of times a day when someone says a phrase a song with that phrase pops in my head and I'll start singing it. My wife is a musicians so she does the same thing. I try to control this when I'm with people I don't know well.

There is a song for just about everything.

I hear a line in a song, or the background music in a movie that reminds me of another song, if I don't immediately know what song they borrowed the lick from, myh subconscious will work on it until the other song just pops in my head -- perhaps 10 or 20 minutes later while I'm doing something else.

I'm having a conversation with someone, and even if I'm very interested in the conversation, if a song I like a lot comes on the radio or whatever, I have to fight to keep my attention on the conversation.

When buying shoes, how they sound is very important to me.

I'm just curious if you have misophonia.

I used to carry an old tortoise shell pick in my billfold. I would frequent a lot of music stores, antique stores and flea markets always on the eye for a vintage guitar. I felt like I could better evaluate the tone via a the pick I used on my old Martin. I eventually lost it and that weirdness ended.

that's not unhealthy until you start tracking down the license number to get their identity so you can find their cell phone number and call them to let them know their blinkers are out of synch and therefore need to be calibrated to match yours.

If I walk up to an instrument I have to tune it.

I cannot bear the thought that something in my house might be out of tune.

I am pretty sure this is not a psychological disorder of any kind however, absolutely positively sure.

we could easily expand this discussion to include weird things that ARTISTIC people do (that other people would never do)

For example, when I watch youtube videos that are not aligned square with the frame, I immediately begin to imagine snapped lines that would be needed as guides to skew the picture back into alignment. Weird, but I do this all the time, and have for years.

I'm all in on that! I tried, and may be doing it wrong, but couldn't figure out how to change the thread name.

That doesn't mean we can just "go there" though.

Good thing you're a guitarist and not a pianist, otherwise, you'll be spending a lot of time "getting in tune".

Ha ha ha!!

I swear to God though if I had a baby grand in the house I would have a set of tuning keys and hammer and I would be messing with it all the time.

I kid you not.

I've enjoyed reading some of these smile I'm sure I have some odd quirks myself, but nothing comes to mind at the moment.

Growing up my dad was a professional singer and also a voice impressionist, primarily for local radio commercials. One thing he used to always do that drove me and my mom mad, is we've be watching a movie and he's start trying to impersonate the actors in the movie. In hindsight it is kind of funny - not so funny when you can't pay attention to the movie though because someone is talking.

Another one is my dad would always make this weird "bing-bing" sound loudly, which he said had something to do with pitching his voice or something (?) - I can't totally remember. I'm a singer too and certainly never do this. It doesn't matter really, except when he'd do it in a grocery store or something and get odd looks.

I find myself "directing" the music I listen to on the radio or via internet streaming (as if I, an untrained hack choir director, could somehow conduct an orchestra better than Shostakovich or Toscanini). smile

My junior high school band director would practice conducting by putting recordings on and conducting the pre-recorded orchestra.

I walked into the band room one day and saw him doing this, his comment was, "Look how well THEY follow!" (with a giant grin on his face).

My youngest brother conducts for a living. He's also a prof at University of Wisconsin.

He started pretending to conduct when he about 3. Dad gave him a little toy baton from the music store. I can picture him in his pull-ups, little cowboy boots and his baton. Nothing else on him. Just walking around wavin' his arms about.

I should post that picture for him, it's around here somewhere.

LOL Mario, things have not changed very much as it is very common still in 2018 for cats to be playing for 20 - 35 bucks an hour.

Hugs to your bride!

PS: Come on down for a visit.

Oh yes, I survey every room I enter to assess the acoustics. I mean every room, but I see nothing strange with that. lol

Those cats are lucky! Up here cats only get around $25-$40 per night; I was making that back in 1967. There are a few exceptions but not many. The problem very few places to play thus they control the bucks.

The next time we go to the panhandle to see Linda's sister we will try to meet up. I want to get to see Don also but money right now is a little thin.

Hugs to your Linda and family.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

Good thing you're a guitarist and not a pianist, otherwise, you'll be spending a lot of time "getting in tune".

Some might find it weird that for decades I carried my tuning hammers and kit to gigs, to fix bad strings on the piano. Self defense, really.

I remember a story about Count Basie.

He and his orchestra pulled into town the day of the concert. When he got there the manager apologized that the pianist last night broke the piano so a few of the keys don't work. I called the piano shop but they can't fix this one or bring a new one until Monday.

Mr. Basie replied, "Then I just won't play those notes."

That's a lesson in attitude.

Weird habit (I suppose) that I have.

If I'm in a club I never leave in the middle of a song. I guess that's just normal and respectful, but if I'm in my car and the radio is playing, I won't leave the car until the song is over.

I do the same, just always thought it rude to leave until the tune was finished.

What a fantastic thread! Its so interesting to see all of these habits.

Mine is I have to take a shower before I write music. Usually most of my ideas come to me there and if they don't I still feel refreshed after having one.

Its the little things! grin

at the market I like to rattle a bag of bean coffee and pretend its a shaker. Then I imagine Matt Finley playing brazilian music to the beat...

I only buy wind chimes that are tuned to the key of Em

when I see birds clustered on the power lines, I take a picture then try to sight read their position on the wires.

I only answer the phone if the caller can identify the tone of the beep

I bought a tea kettle, but had to take it back because when the water boiled, it whistled in a key that made me sad.

In order to be in my garden, the hummingbirds have to use pitch correction. I can't abide an out-of-tune hummingbird.

In the supermarket all the carts have bad wheels, which create little "thump" patterns when shoppers push them around. I try to push my cart faster or slower to generate a percussion groove... especially in the coffee aisle where people are shaking the bags of bean coffee...

C’mon up again anytime, Pat. I’ll play whatever you want.

Speaking of wind chimes, I live near Woodstock, NY which most of you may recognize as the home of lots of musicians, but one of them founded Woodstock Chimes which is known worldwide. I have bought several. Before I knew about these, I made a few of my own. The largest one I tuned to play a minor 9th chord. Very inspiring. A smaller one plays a mMaj7 chord, much used in Brazilian music.

what a totally cool thing to do! One more reason to respect the man, the musician, and the legend known as Matt Finley!

You may laugh, but I've actually done that.

But I don't shake the coffee (yet!) laugh

So do some famous people. The Bee Gees developed the song beat and tempo of "Jive Talkin' " from the sound their car wheels made driving over a bridge in Miami every day as they went to the recording studio.

Not a habit, but one band I played in that had lots of brass instruments had a gig a couple hours away. The highway we were driving on was under construction with a lane shift for miles that caused us to have to drive on the rumble strips. Our euphonium player busted out his instrument and we had fun guessing what notes different speeds would generate on the rumble strips. Fun for maybe 15 minutes.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
