Come on PG Music. Do better.
Band In A Box 2018 On OSX is proving as buggy as hell - when it comes to hosting AudioUnit or VST plugins. In both 32 bit or 64 "Bridged" mode.

And thats without going anywhere near the new piano-roll editor

And yes - i'm reporting all the cases and scenarios best as i can to PG support. As well as crash logs.

But I can't be the only one seeing this. And its happening on both my macs.

One on el cap the other in High sierra.

Not good enough.

RealTracks may be the new kid on the block - and suitable for many tasks.

But for composing music on the MELODY track - and in many cases - where I specifically WANT to use MIDI backing styles - so that I can select plugins for use with them - BIAB is letting me down.

MIDI is still a **thing** ya know!....

nonchai,

could you share a few examples of the styles and AU/VST's you used ?

Also, what was the response from PG support ?

BLONDY1.sty

And i was using 32 bit versions of SynthMaster One and N.I. FM8.

I tried both Audiounit and 32 bit VST.

I am also noticing that when I save a song that previously used MIDI styles with default MIDI GM instruments - with changes in the PLUGINS page made so that one or more tracks now carry a plugin on them - that when I load the song
the plugins will load. but as soon as playback occurs all the tracks that I have set up to have plugins on them ( AU/VST ) simply revert to playing the built in GM instrument and the tack no longer carries the plugin on it.

I suspect that if a BIAB style ( i am using old- ish MIDI Styles ) has GM program change messages embedded in the MIDI for a style - that program-change causes the track to revert to the DLSMusicDevice synth - REGARDLESS of whether

Here is a link to my DropBox area where you will see a video screen recording of me using BIAB demonstrating how BIAB refuses to play my song and style with the plugins I chose.
It keeps reverting to GM DLSMusicDevice

After you've done all the changes you want do you do a regenerate and then save ?

Hi Nonchai,

I'm getting a lot of crashes with the FM8 and Synthmaster demos as well. It seems to be worse with FM8 than Synthmaster, and the AU version of FM8 seems to be a bit worse than the VST version, but it's not working great with the VST or AU version of either one.

The crashes seem to happen the most when hitting Play, and when saving songs that use these synths, and when switching synths while a song is playing. I'm reporting these issues now.

Regarding the problem in your video, that's not happening to me. Any synths that are assigned to tracks aren't disappearing for me. Can you send that song file, "AAA PLUGIN TEST.SGU" to support@pgmusic.com for testing please?

Thanks
Kent

Yes. When i regenerate after assigning a plugin and play back the song - it plays with the plugin correctly.

I then save the song. And for good measure quite BIAB. Then i open up the song file and try playing. At this point it is as if program change messages embedded in the original song ( or style ) totally override the plugin and it disappears - and instead DLSMusicDevice just plays the track as in the original MIDI style.

So for example in the original BIAB style I use ( BLONDY1.sty ) the bass is a GM fretless bass.

I replace this with SynthMaster One and select a preset in it which happens to be an arpeggiated bass-synth ( which works really well with this style ). I then regenerate and play. everything is fine. I save the song.

when i reopen the song the plugin appears allocated to the bass track as before - but as soon as I do PLAY - it disappears to be replaced wth DLSMusicDevice GM fretless bass.

after your developers have fixed all these issues with plugin crashes and the strange behaviour of saved BIAB songs that contain plugins on tracks having those tracks revert to DLSMusic device - once all these issues are fixed - can you also ask your developers to allow one to hear the sound of the plugin instrument when one is playing in MIDI from a MIDI keyboard. Whether just to audition the sound and try out musical ideas - or when actually recording a MIDI melody track.

One should be able to hear what one is playing.

If I want to use Synthogy Ivory, FM8 or a Kontakt instrument it is obvious that if i am improvising a melody that I want recorded - that I should be able to hear the damn thing as I play it.

This is elementary stuff. Not rocket science - and something so obvious I simply shouldnt have to be going - begging-bowl-fashion asking for such things, as plugin volume control, plugin auditioning... and so on....

I shouldn't have to be asking "please sir... can I have some more" .... Oliver Twist - fashion. frown

Maybe some of your BIAB staff should simply spend some time actually USING this new PIANO-ROLL feature. Try improvising melodies along to a backing track. Try actually recording melodies into the MELODY track- using different plugins. Play around.

See for yourselves the kinds of things that are missing - and should be in there.

And put all these bug-fixes changes into the next BIAB update.

Hi Nonchai,

Your request of being able to play any track in BIAB with your keyboard has already been passed along, but bear in mind that it's been possible to play VST synths with your MIDI keyboard since VST support was implemented, by assigning them to the Thru track. That's always been the track that's triggered by the keyboard, and works fine with plugins.

Regarding the crashes, have you tried build 263 yet? So far, it's taken care of the crashes for me when using those synths. If you're still getting the crashes after updating, please let us know.

Thanks
Kent

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
