HI Folks,

I'm trying to use BIAB 2018 (Build 258) to create a song that starts in 3/4 for the A section and then moves to 4/4 for the B section.

So far, I've been able to make this works with MIDI, but not with Real Tracks.

Here's what I've done:

1. Pick a 3/4 style for the A section (Bars 1-16)
2. Place my cursor in Bar 17 and right click. Select "Bar Settings"
3. Input "3" into "# Beats this Bar" (I've also tried not doing this)
4. Click STY...
5. Select a 4/4 style
6. Regenerate the song (I've also tried not doing this)

1/2 the time this causes a crash. 1/2 the time it switches styles at Bar 17, but it does not switch to 4/4 time.

I've tried this going from 4/4 to 3/4. No dice.
I've tried saving and re-launching. No go.
I've tried different Real Tracks. Uh uh.

Thoughts?

Hi Kidmuse,

The number of beats in bar 1 dictates the maximum number of beats per bar for the rest of the song. So if you want to be able to switch between 3/4 and 4/4, you'll need to start in 4/4 for at least one bar. If you start in 3/4, then the rest of the song can only have 3/4, 2/4, or 1/4 bars.

Also, when you do use Bar Settings to switch from 3/4 to 4/4, you only need to click STY and choose a 4/4 style, and that will change the time signature automatically. If you also put a 3 in the "#beats this bar" box like you've described, that would override the style's time signature change and force the song to stay in 3/4.

Does this help? Feel free to ask for clarification on any of these points.

Thanks
Kent

Hi Kent,

Thanks for your reply. As I said in my post, I've tried this starting a song in 4/4 and going to 3/4 and not putting "3" into the Beats Per Bar.

I just tried it, again, and it still does not work. I will send a song file to your attention and then we can take it from there.

Thanks for sending the file. It has the same issue for me too, so I'll have to do some more testing. I'll let you know once I find something.

Cheers

Hi,

It looks like I was wrong about not needing to change the number of beats per bar (that'll show me to reply without testing). Sorry about that. smile

When going from 4/4 to 3/4, I did need to put a 3 in the "# beats this bar" box, and when going back to 4/4, I needed to enter a 4.

In the song you sent, the first style used, TEAK.STY, uses MultiDrums, consisting of the WoodblockEv RealDrums and two loops, congas and shakers. This appears to be causing a problem, even after the number of beats per bar issue is sorted. The Multi-Drums don't seem to want to clear out when the style changes, which messes up the timing for the rest of the song (this appears to be a bug, which I'll test further and report tomorrow).

If I change the initial style to something with normal drums, like LAZYBLU.STY, then the Style and meter changes seem to work fine.

Does that work for you?

I did get one crash while working on this, by the way. If I can narrow down what caused the crash tomorrow, I'll report that as as well.

Thanks
Kent

An alternative could be to create individual files for each part of your song like suggested below:
4/4 part 1 as songx4by4part1.sgu
3/4 part 1 as songx3by4part1.sgu
4/4 part 2 as songx4by4part2.sgu
.
.
.
ect
Finally take all you parts and export them into a DAW Pro Tools or Logic ProX or similar and then stick it all together in your DAW.

It's a slow process, but for me it provides me full control of each part of the song, and if I'm not satisfied with the rendering and creation from the Real Track algorithm, it takes less time to re-render each part/section of the song.

I used this method, when BIAB2016 was very little cooperative mixing Real Tracks and Midi in the same file, and actually have adopted that method permanently.

(If PG Music staff is now banging their head against the wall in frustration I fully understand it - customers are not following the most elementary logic) :-)

MacMini M1 - BIAB2021 - Logic Pro X - iZotope Music Production Suite - Scaler 2 - far too many Waves plugins and Line 6 Guitars and boards + a fantastic Yamaha THR10ll mini Amp - Avid MBOX Studio

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
