Hi all
This performance track thing still has me scratching my head.
I can make my midi melody track into a performance track no prob.
Next I can move it to the audio track as audio. No prob
Now here is the rub .
I can now delete the data on the melody track, and therefore record more midi.
Trouble is if I go to put this on the audio track as a performance track, it erases what I just put there above.
If my soloist track is full also that leaves me no where to go,
I thought I remember reading some where you could do this multiple times al la sound on sound perhaps I am dreaming.
I cant see an option to move it to an unused style track.
Or is there a way to move the first audio track that I generated from the first melody track to a spare style track if I have one. Thus freeing up the audio track, for the second converted performance track.
It seems to label performance tracks as Artist I guess that’s right?
Thanks
Mike

Hi Mike,

If you just want to move MIDI data off of the Melody or Soloist track so you can record more MIDI, you can simply use Edit - Copy Special - Copy/Move Tracks, to move it to any track that's not being used, as MIDI. No need to make a Performance Track.

If you have audio that you need to move off the audio track so you can record more audio, you can use Audio - Move Audio to Performance Track to move your recorded audio to any blank track.

The only time I can think of that I'd move something to the audio track is if Bass, Piano, Drums, Guitar, Strings, Melody, and Soloist are all occupied (but the Audio track is empty), and I need to free one of those tracks up so I can record MIDI to it, or generate an additional RealTrack. That's when I'd make one of those tracks a Performance Track and move it to Audio.

If every single track is occupied and I still need to record more MIDI or audio, or add another RealTrack, I'd open the song in RealBand and finish it there. smile

Hope this helps!

Hi Kent

Thanks so much I had forgotten the obvious way of moving my midi melody off with copy and paste.
Trust me to find a complicated way of working no wonder I was having problems .
Now I fully understand the point of performance and audio tracks thanks so much for your prompt help.
Best regards
Mike

Mike, you can also treat BIAB mixer the same as if it were an analog multitrack 8 track recorder. All of the old school multitrack mixing techniques work wonderfully with BIAB.

It is easy to get 16 or more tracks by using the above methods Kent pointed out. If you are willing to commit to submixes of the bounce from the mixer tracks to the audio track you can free 7 tracks for additional recording with one bounce. At that point you are already at 13 tracks. Unlike the old analog days, there is no loss in quality because all of the bouncing occurs digitally and because the audio can be selected to be stereo or mono, you can preserve panning.

Once you've converted a bounce to the audio channel, that audio is frozen so you are also free to change the chord chart, style and feel of your project without affecting the audio which will not regenerate.

This creates many unique options for your project. For instance, you can create a bass part, drums and then make the piano, guitar, strings, melody and soloist track all the same instrument and using mute, unmute and panning between these 5 tracks to create a single performance and then export it as a stereo audio file. The result is the same as cutting and pasting in RealBand or any DAW to make a composite performance from multiple takes.

You can expand on this idea by taking advantage of the ability of BIAB tracks to have up to 10 instruments per track. So rather than create a unique performance of a single instrument, use two or more and place them in different order between each track and this will allow you to pan any single instrument the same as automating panning in a DAW. You can also have multiple instruments alternate solos or fills this way.

Because BIAB reads ahead to generate your chord chart, it does an excellent job of anticipating the changing of instruments and cross fading the instruments as well as tighten up the endings just prior to the transition.

With preplanning your arrangement, you can use BIAB to create really complex performances without ever having to move your project to a DAW.

I've done a lot of analog recording with limited multitracks and find doing this way to be a lot of fun and also effective on some recordings.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
