PGMusic XTRA Styles Pak #5 Contest Submission:

I thought I would have a little fun with this one. This is definitely not my original song, but from the public domain. I was previewing the new XTRA Styles Pak #5 and just fell in love with the _ZEALOT style (described as Zealot Jazz Soul Rhythm Section). I then though I would marry it with a classical song, and I settled on Beethoven's Fifth, and I titled it "A Fifth Goes Down Smoothly". This is s combination MIDI/RealTracks song.

I created the melody using alternating flute and oboe (in MIDI). For the MIDI sounds, I used Auditory Labs "Real Flute" VSTi for the flute sound; the Oboe is from the Cakewalk TTS-1 DXi synth. The rest of the tracks are all RealTracks. In addition to the tracks created by the style (see song summary below), I also added RT2566, Horn Section as something of a pad, and also RT1877, Fiddle, Soloist, Country as a foil against the melody line.

I created it in Band-In-A-Box after laying out the chord chart and creating the melody parts in Noteworthy Composer (which I then exported from NWC and imported into BIAB 2018 as a MIDI file). After getting all the rests, shots, holds, etc in place, I saved the file and continued editing it in RealBand 2018. After getting it where I wanted it (and in this case, I didn't use any effects or plugins), I just did some final tweaking in Diamond Cut DC10 (to normalize the sound, enhance it a little, cut the tails off, etc).

Neat idea cleverly executed. I especially like the intricate chordal/melodic movements of the two leads. Complex stuff made to 'look' simple.
Well done cool

WOW John this is fantastic. Great choice of instrumentation and you stops were perfect. Your mix is spot on and it sounds live to me.

Great job on this. This fifth went down very smoothly.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.

Hi John,

What a great listen! You did a masterful job playing the instruments off one another. I hadn't paid much attention to this style. I think I'll go back and take another listen.

The detail you employed is so clever and well-executed. I wouldn't know where to begin to create something this unique and sweet on the ears. Excellent! Totally loved it!!! Good luck in the contest. And thanks for making my ears smile.

Great example of how different programs can work together to create a wonderful audio production, when the programs are guided by someone with experience and taste.

I really like the arrangement. The song went in directions I would not have tried; good for you!

Good luck in the competition.

Hello, John

Very cool and clever!
I love Beethoven very much.
The styles you picked up and No. 5 symphony are going very well.
Personally I think that it is better if the tempo is much quicker.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.
Good luck with the Xtra Styles 5 contest!

Best regards.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
