HI ALL
Problems with some muffled voices in Sforzando from imported SF2 sound font.

I am very fond of the Timbres of Heaven sound font and use it in the Coolsoft Virtual synth no prob all voices are good.
However the coolsoft gets installed as a device so can’t be used for direct rendering.

So the answer is as I want to direct render it. I have imported it into the Sforzando vst
This works well for many of my sound fonts.
However when using Timbres of Heaven which is sf2, I import and the Aria converter in the Sforzando import, converts it to SFZ

All is well but the first 2 voices 000 Concert grand, 001 Bright grand are dull low volume and muffled. Voice 3 002 Electric grand is fine. But voice 4 003 honkytonk is the same as the first 2, muffled etc . After that all other voices in the font are fine and sound great.

I know similar voices in sound fonts share elements so maybe that is a clue with these 3 pianos. But the font is good in coolsoft before conversion .
I have also looked at it in the Viena sound font editor and all seems well and all voices play normally on the virtual keyboard or via my controller.
So my suspicion is in the conversion process.

Wondered if you guys had experienced anything like this I think Trevor is a Timbres of Heaven fan.
All your thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

Mike

My experience has been that soundfonts don't play exactly write in Sforzando (specifically, long held notes don't...hold that is).

I would recommend installing SynthfontVST, load Timbres of Heaven there, and you should be able to render directly from both BIAB and RealBand. It should sound the same in Synthfont as it does in Coolsoft.

Hi John

Thanks very much I tried that downloaded and installed the new version 3
32 bit version,
Yes it certainly can load my Timbres of heaven sound font. So I guess that points to a
quirk in Sforzando .
only a 15 day trial but only 15 Euros any way.
However if I try to use it as the default VST in BIAB it does not load the drum sounds from the midi style and all drums sound as piano,
I suspect this is because the drums in the style are on track 2 ch10
But the vst thinks track 2 goes to channel 2 cant see a way to change this,
Thanks for your interest
Mike

I just loaded Synthfont as my default synth using the Reality 32MB soundfont (my go to) and all tracks played pretty much the same as when I used the TTS-1 synth, including the drum track.

Maybe give a little more information and we can help troubleshoot it.

Hi John

Thanks again for your thoughts.
Well I downloaded the Reality sound font that you seem fond of.
Had a bit of prob as it came as a compressed .sfark file but found an online cloud converter that to convert to SF2
Quite a good sounding find that sound font.

As for the Vst synth font plug in I managed to get it to play the drums from a BIAB style by choosing percussion . standard kit on ch 10 of the main screen that comes up when you select it as your Vst it remembers this once done on closing Biab
Bit odd that it cant follow the Biab style setting?
Because if you open a standard multi channel midi file to the melody track (which of course disables the style to play the midi) the vst follows all voices including its ch 10 drums with out having to do the above. However the cont in that come before the midi plays uses the piano!
Tis wonderful the works of a wheelbarrow.

It's also possible that the drum kit the style wants to use actually isn't in the soundfont file, which would result in nothing played. Seeing back to the standard kit brought the drums back.

Just a thought.

I tried out sForzando, latest version, with the Heaven GM fonts; couldn't get it to work properly. Same with Sampletank, and the Omnisynth GM set, bought versions. Too much hassles to get going.

XGlite works quite well, though you'll need the installation PAT file from Mike to adress the sounds via BIABs dropdown track menus. Best alternative IMO is the free Halion Sonic SE 3, or the older Hypersonic2 from Steinberg. (The latter is licensed, alas not available anymore, but as it's outdated as such one might consider an illegal version LoL or buy it on eBay) - F

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
