I think I've gotten the hang of inserting Real Tracks, but I'm trying to load a Soloist (as opposed to Rhythm or Background) track that I only want to play for 8 bars, starting (for example) at bar 25. What is the preferred method to do this?

One way would be to use 'F5'

Go to bar 25 and press F5 to bring up the edit settings menu. In the top section, right hand side, press the 'realtracks' button. Select which BIAB track you want to place the soloist realtrack on, select the realtrack you want to use, and press ok. Then 8 bars later do the same thing except clear the realtrack (or go back to the previous realtrack if you had a rhythm realtrack there before).

If I had a free track, I would load the soloist and just use F5 to mute it and return to normal as needed. Otherwise I would do it as BlueAttitude described.

Hello Tangmo,

For solos, have you explored the Soloist Dialog?

There are some great options here for generating a Solo in your song. For your situation specifically, if you select Custom under 'Solo Mode', you can generate a Solo at a certain bar and establish for how many bars you would like it to play out for.

Try experimenting, you may find this will give you more natural solos in your projects.

I export the real tracks from BB/RB to my DAW. In the DAW, I have the entire track available and use volume envelopes to control what comes in and goes out and where.

The advantage to this method is as follows. If I have something about that solo that I do not like, it's really easy to grab the part from a different section of the song that follows the same chord pattern, such as a different verse or chorus, where the solo would not normally be heard and simply copy and paste it into the one that will be heard. I can't count the number of times I have used this with not only solos, but the fills that are heard in a verse between the singer's phrases.

Thank you, gentlemen (and Dave). I'll be delving into all these possibilities soon.

To learn more about BIAB while you are creating your solo, try this for fun and expanding your knowledge of the program.

As Matt suggested, generate the entire track of your soloist instrument. Solo and review the entire performance and using the Audio Editor, cut and paste a custom solo. This gives you the same advantages Guitarhacker describes in his comment.

It is quick and easy to do and is be done completely within the BIAB program so it can also be useful to MAC BIAB users. You can use either a midi track, RealTrack, Supermidi or even a live recording.

The key to being able to do this in BIAB is the track must first be exported as a WAV file and imported back into your project onto the Audio Track. Otherwise, the Audio Edit screen doesn't have audio to edit.

Once you've created your solo or any custom track, convert the audio to a Performance Track and place the Performance Track onto another track to free your Audio Track for additional use in your project.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
