I have some General MIDI files with system exclusive data in them. If I load them in Sonar, it recognizes the banks of data and asks me if I want to send them. On the other hand, Power Tracks 12 doesn't appear to even see that they are present. Is there some setting that can be turned on to make Power Tracks recognize the systems exclusive data in .MID files?

If the sysex is embedded in the seq as track data it will 'play' or transmit at the given point.

If it is loaded as 'sysex on the side' you could try the SYSEX window in the window dropdown..

Thanks for the suggestion. I checked that earlier. The files I was looking at load a number of banks into the SYSX window in Sonar, but nothing at all SYSEX window in Power Tracks. They are professionally produced files that I've had for quite some time. I just started wondering today why playing them in Sonar would switch my Motif Rack ES into GM mode, while playing the same files with Power Tracks does not.

The Power Tracks help file says "If you save a song to a Standard MIDI File PowerTracks Pro can't save information such as track looping, comments, initial program change, and system exclusive." so I'm wondering if it can't load it from a Standard MIDI file either, or if there is some way it can.

If Sonar can export the sysex as a .syx file, powertracks can open it in the sysex window

Hello Lee,

If you open one of the MIDI files, select all tracks, and press F2 to open the event list, do you see an "event" containing the sysex data there? It should be there...

Rharv,
Thanks for the suggestion. I have a .syx file that I can load in Power Tracks and send, it would just be easier if Power Tracks would find the data in the .mid file and send it.

Andrew,
Yes. In one of the files there is one event in track 1 with the GENERAL MIDI ON command. In the other file there are several events in track 19 with sysex data at the beginning and at the end of the song. In fact, track 19 has a "lyric" event at the start with says "SYS EX". For some reason though, this data does not appear to be sent to the hardware. When I play the files in Sonar it detects the sysex data and asks if I want to send it. When I say "yes" the Motif Rack ES switches to GM mode. When I play the file in Power Tracks, the Motif stays in single voice mode unless I switch it manually before I start it playing. Is there some way to get Power Tracks to send the data? I'm just being lazy, but I'm trying to avoid having to push the button. I created a .SYX file that I can load and run In Power Tracks to do it, but it would be nice the the GM files could do it themselves.

You could try Prefs -> MIDI Out -> and try changing the Sysex delay upwards from the default of zero and see if that does the trick...

In the PT sysex window, did you check "auto", then as Mac suggested set the Sysex Delay to 200 if you can. That should do it.
Because I use XG I have to have a GM and an XG reset in case I export my file as a midi or play a file with sysex changes. The XG reset restores the hard synth status quo. Seems to work after I add "auto" to reset .syx.

Just a thought. - Ian

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
