SOUNDCLOUD - And Maybe

Well, It's been about a year... I've been busy with other stuff so I left Band In A Box alone for a while.
After the last song I posted here got zero responses (I'm not bitter lol), This is yet another slow tune.
I don't know why I keep writing slow stuff, Really I'm in to Rock 'n' Rock and Rockabilly mostly, but I love all types of music so I guess I like to venture into areas where hopefully there isn't as much cliché.

Bear in mind, this has (as usual for me) been written, arranged and recorded in one and a half days, so it's a 'work in progress'.

Also, coincidence is a funny thing... Not been here for nearly a year and I come to find that there's another song called 'Maybe' right at the top of the list of the showcase section smile It's a great song too.
I'm just thankful I decided to call mine 'And Maybe'.

Anyway... I'd be pleased to hear any comments... Good or bad... I can take it... I took rejection lol

Hi Mr. Jones,

I made Maybe. At first I want to thank you for the compliments you made about that song. But what worried me a bit is the tone of your statement. I don't want to analize it much, but maybe you should call your song 'Sure me'instead of 'and maybe'.

Sure you came back to Band in a Box, and sure you will make songs people like to hear, and tell you about. that's what it's about. It gives a lot of satisfaction if you enjoy making songs, without prejudice to what others may think or write. And don't make your songs too heavy. Rock and Roll sounds good.

Hope hearing your song soon,
Hans

Hi MrJones

The best way to get other people to listen to and comment on your music is for you to listen and comment on theirs.

I listened to your song, good song, I liked the lyrics, also nice guitar work and strong vocal. Mix sounded good too, although I'm not on my music computer at the moment so not listening through the studio monitors.

Hi Birchwood. Sorry if you detected a 'tone' in my comment.
I genuinely enjoyed listening to your song... I just thought "well that's typical" when I logged in for the first time in ages to find another song with almost exactly the same title. smile But it was more me having a poke at myself than anything.

I do do it for my own enjoyment and I think the journey is more relevant than the destination so the process is what matters to me when writing and home recording.

I'm just glad Band in a Box came along to make the job easier and quicker. smile

Yes, I get that... That's why these things generally flow over my head. smile
Though I do try and listen and comment, I know I haven't been particularly active on the forum and tend to just "hit & run" when I've done new recordings... My bad.

Thanks for the comments.
I've re-recorded the vocal this morning and altered the mix to bring the vocal out more and some of the guitar parts were treading on each other (and on the vocals) so I've moved them to the sides a bit.

Problem is that after a while I never know if it's sounding "better" or just different from last time I heard the playback.

Welcome back - and a really solid first tune for your return! Lovely the slow, smoky atmosphere on this. It has a lot of character, and is really smooth as well. Both your vocals and the guitar on this ache and give off tons of emotion. I found it really engaging.

You should be proud of this one - can't wait to hear what else you come up with (and hopefully it won't be another year) - thanks for sharing smile

Thanks Deryk.

Well I've just updated to BiaB 2018 along with the new extras so I'm looking forward to having a rummage around in the new stuff and see what comes out.

Thanks for the comments. smile

Mr. Jones, first of all, I enjoyed your tune.
Vocals, composition, lyrics, everything is at high standard.
Loved guitar!

You asked...I have very "average" ears for mixing, so do not take this as tip from a pro smile To me, mix sounds a bit on high frequency side. Most likely you wanted like that, just speaking out loud.

Thank you for sharing,
Misha.

Thanks Misha... Well I'm always cautious of the fact that as we get old, the high end frequencies we hear go dull, so it's possible you are correct as I am the wrong side of 50 and have spent my adult life in loud rock 'n' roll bands grin ... The other alternative is that my studio monitors may be a bit on the low end side so there's too much bass in the mix I get here and I needlessly crank the mid/highs up to compensate.

Glad you enjoyed it anyway. smile

Thanks Greg. Longtime fan of Dylan so I guess he's always there a bit in my own songs. There are a couple of Dylan covers (I did with BiaB) on my Sound Cloud channel.

Rundown of BiaB components:

Style: CROK12H.STY: Slow Classic Rock w/Held 12 Str
Feel: Ev16
BPM: 70

Some components swapped out from the loaded style so what I actually used were:

Bass - 366 Bass, Electric, Country Ev 065
Organ - 688, Organ, B3, Background Pop Ev65
Drums - Real drums= NashvilleEven16^1-a:sidestick, Hihat, b:Snare, Ride
Pedal Steel - 2667: Pedal Steel, Background DreamySingleNote Ev75
Guitar - 2829: Guitar, Electric, Soloist CountryPopBrent12-key Ev 085 [video]

Then after I'd loaded the individual .wav files onto my Tascam SP24SD I added:
Dean acoustic for the faint twiddly bits in the chorus and my Gretsch 6120 for the main rhythm guitar with the underlying riff between the lines of the song. Then the vocal of course.
The main lead guitar is BiaB (the 2829 one) but I only put the fader up for the intro, the lead break and the very end.

Very nice smooth blues ballad, radio-friendly to my ears - arrangement has everything at right places. This would be a good song for my playlist when travelling.

Your vocals were on point and suited the style of song perfectly, and the song itself is really well polished! Awesome job, and thanks for sharing!

This is stunning! I just wish I had the lyrics in front of me when listening to this ... I couldn't find them anywhere :-( But otherwise, a wonderful, catchy, tuneful and yes, beautiful ballad that gripped my attention from first note to last. Good job!

Mr. Jones,

Well, for one, I wouldn’t really consider this a slow song . . . it’s really chill and drives forward in a way that makes me want to keep listening. Nice work on the vocals and production. Good stuff!

Kind regards,

Deej

Janne: Thank you, very kind of you to say so.

Ember: Thank you. I'm still amazed at how polished BiaB makes my songs sound. My strength I think is writing and arranging, so it's perfect to have to hand, well recorded and perfectly played (but still human sounding) pieces to put together to make the overall sound I want.

Musician 17: Thanks. I'm just about to type the lyrics up and I'll post them in a short while.

Deej: Thanks, I consider any tune that's less than 200BPM to be a "slow song" laugh

Peter F: Thanks, The sound of that organ makes me think Dylan. Glad you enjoyed.

Scott C: Thanks, after the first mix where the different guitars were treading on each other a bit, I think I got them sorted and sounding cool.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
