Hi Folks.
Have this semi-Reggae tune to share. I tried to mix some styles of music that are not commonly fused, just for the sake of experiment. Part English, part Russian and small part in Esperanto. I do not speak Esperanto, just wanted to try it a bit to see how it works. Main arrangement done in Varranger. BIAB with live horns / sax to the rescue. Tracks- 588: Sax and 2292:Horns. Synths of Halion. Mixed in Cakewalk.
Please, if you have a comment that is constructive or less than positive, kindly share. I honestly do want to improve and take beatings very well. This forum is my main music "teacher" lately smile Thank you for listening!

Just tell me a story

Lyrics:

Oh, tell me story of world with no wars and no worries
where people are smiling, sun is always shinning,
Death is far away.
------------------------------------
Translation:
Lead me dirt road through the pines
sap fragrance makes me light headed
Birds are quiet, wind is not waking
Tall carpet of moth.
----------------------------
Oh, tell me a story of traveling gypsies
and of Norsemen battling stormy seas.
----------------------------
Trans:
Cover me fog with white linen
Oak as green idol bracing sky
Night sneaking as lynx, heart is in anxiety
Shouts are muted by emptiness
-----------------------------
Oh, just tell me a story....
Just say everything going to be ok.
-----------------------------
Trans:
River bubbling quietly...
Jay bird is singing loud
She is saying farewell to summer
With the song...
--------

Oh, just tell me a story
That you'll be by my side, through the night...till the morning.
-----------------------
Esperanto trans:
Wind is blowing ashes
of last year's songs
Wind is puppeteer
who is cutting cords
-----------------------
Laugh or cry...
Or just heavy rain
falling on your head.

Hi Misha,

I like the way you are always pushing the envelope with your compositions, always makes for an interesting listen.

I dig everything about this, everything works.

Love your phrasing on "Just say everything going to be ok." smile And the instrumental break before the Esperanto bit is cool too.

Enjoyed!

A curious composition...
Actually an inspiration of what can be done with music...
I admire your experimentations & how well you pull them off...
I can't think of anything "less than positive" to share...
So I guess you will to get your "beatings" from others...
All I can say is, I really enjoyed hearing this one.

Good job! Love the arrangement. The vocals are great, too - but, for me, what makes this work is the time you've taken with it to make sure it works in every way - arrangement, vocals, balance, texture, etc. The care you've taken with it shows - well done!

Dave, Thank you for listening and encouraging feedback! I am still waiting for the right inspiration for blues song to make, so I can ask you to chip in. It just got to be the right one, so you do not fall asleep smile
----------------------------
Jim, You said it right! It is even curious to me smile
Yep, also true about "pulling off".
Sometimes I do stuff and it feels like I am making a cheesecake from cheddar cheese, but at the end it is somewhat eatable. Thank you!
----------------------------
musician17, Thank you for words of support! Honestly, if I had to critique myself I would say it is about 65% finished. It has strong, accented rhythm & bass line, as with most reggae tunes, so it makes things much easier to tame (see my feedback on your tune). But what my tune lacks is proper human feel instrumentals, besides winds. I do not have talent as you with guitar, so it is kind of blank spot in that perspective.

Very unique and very interesting.
Really unlike most songs on the forum and a clever use of the band and live playing.

Excellent work (so far)..

I love the Satchmo part.
Misha, set free from linguistic and temporal elements you produce entertaining and interesting work.
I enjoyed this very much and the ending, going from Esperanto to sax n drums - was a great choice.

Cheers

Misha ...

So cool! You have some of the most interesting music on the forum! Loved the original sound. And your voice is so expressive. Loved the laid back instrumental break! And those horns - sweet! Love how attentive you are to all the details ... great in every way! Wishing you the best ...

Misha,

Excellent music.

A superb mix. Bright and crisp, yet with a warmth (not an easy balance to achieve).

A great sound start to finish.

Wow - what an engaging and unique tune! Love the mashup of styles here. It is definitely a bewildering experience but you managed to pull it off beautifully, and without it feeling forced. Really nice job on the vocals. I appreciate that you included translated lyrics.

Really well done - thanks for sharing smile

Spacious mix fits very well in the reggae rhythm, nice melodic percussions. Powerful vocals. Really intriguing mix of different styles, I really like how you have combined reggae with Russian folk style. 'Norsemen battling stormy seas', that's exactly how the song sounds in my ears smile

We like reggae and we like semi-reggae smile So we are in from the get go!

You are the master of creative and effective genre mashups.

"Oh, tell me a story of traveling gypsies
and of Norsemen battling stormy seas"

What a line...so vivid...a 500 year span from Norsemen to Gypsies yet they seem so close in those lines. A lyric mashup smile

We enjoyed the entire production...no need to parse it out. All good.

I am very happy that so many people responded well to my little experiment!

Peter, Thank you! I hope you will tell me when quality declines, so I can pinpoint event smile (I am actually serious about this one)
--------------
Ray, I am glad you liked this tune. I value your opinion greatly. Thank you!
--------------
Alan, great to hear from you! Thank you for listening and excellent feedback here and on Sc!
--------------
FJ, Thank you for nice words on the mix. Thankfully, my stage of extreme muddiness is over, but there are long miles to go before mix will "breath" smile
---------------
Deryk, It was forced a little, but not to the point of fainting smile Thank you for kind words!
-----------------
Janne, Thank you kind words! Thinking about this a little, when I wrote this tune I might of involuntary got caught under influence of your "Fate Is A Woman", which I also feel was a bit experimental (but awesome btw).
-----------------
J&B, Thank you for your time and excellent feedback here and on SC. You are one of best mixers on this forum, I do not mind if you kick me a little. It might be good for me smile

I really enjoyed this! It reminds me to get back to reggae tune I have put on the back burner several times. The overall sound and the great vocal enhance the fine lyrics. Good work, Tom

Tommy,
Thank you! Reggae is always a fun journey for me, listening or writing something in "style of". I wish there would be more related RT/RD items for the genre!

Hi Misha,

This is the strangest reggae song I've ever heard (and I mean that in a positive way)! I just loved it!

I'll have to repeat what Alan wrote: You are original! You could post a song anonymously and we would all know it was you... you have a sound which is unique, a voice which is distinctively different from others and you use chord progressions that are quite different from what we normally hear here. You have a very special talent and I am happy that you share your music with us!

Very cool backtrack. Very different. It had a gypsy feel to it. Super vocal. Well done

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
