I'm new with RB and still have not figured out how to say here live guitar when recording. I can hear all other tracks. I read in a previous post you cannot monitor the recording track. Is this still true and if so what ways do you use to hear? Thanks to all. Jeff

What do you have to work with?

I can 'monitor the recording track' all day long, so I'm not sure where you heard that bit.

What soundcard or input device are you using?
What OS?

Thanks guys. I was real tired last night and could not even spell correctly. I have windows XP and for input drivers I have Microsoft Sound Mapper and Realtek HD Audio input if that is what you are asking. I am just running my guitar thru a effect pedal straight into computer mic input. It does record and I can monitor previous tracks but not the track being recorded onto. Should I use external mixer and split guitar before going to computer or can RB do this? Again I am very new at this computer stuff. Thanks.

Doubleclick on the little speaker icon in your taskbar next to the clock to open the software mixer applet.

Locate the fader for "Mic" -- if it is not there, try the options menu to check the box fot showing Mic.

The Mic input is typically MUTED by default so that a new user won't get feedback from the speakers when they activate the Mic. Uncheck that and also you may have to revisit the fader a few times to adjust level so your guitar is at the right monitoring level along with the other tracks as you record.

NOTE: The Mic input jack is WRONG for what you are doing as it is electrically "too hot" and the wrong impedance. However, with careful adjustment of the Output volume on that guitar pedal (keep it LOW) you should be able to get started with recording like that.

Have Fun,

I also have RT as well. Make sure you choose RT as both the input and output in the prefs/audio/drivers. Then click on the little speaker in the tray to open the Windows sound applet. Click options/properties/recording click line in. Click OK. Don't use mic in. In the recording control panel move the line in slider all the way up. Click options/properties/playback. Check off everything. Click OK. The next panel is what controls what you hear so you want volume, Wave, SW synth, CD audio, Line in. mic all the way up. Mute the mic and things like telephone. Specifically the line in slider in this screen controls what you hear from the line in. Control the volume of what you hear from your guitar.

Again thanks. I am learning more about computer than I ever thought. "Locate the fader for "Mic" -- if it is not there, try the options menu to check the box fot showing Mic". It's not there and not in the options window either. Do I need another sound card? I bet somehow it is not figured correctly but I may have to take laptop to computer person.

Click on options/recording it's there but you want line in. The jack on the computer serves as both the line in and the mic.
Mac & I must have been typing together.

Thanks so much to both of you. Under the recording input option I have both Mic and Stero. They are both clicked. Under playback option I have :
Master
SW Synth
Wave
CD player
PC beep

I do not have mic or line option to click and have no volume control. I think the driver is not correct. I have updated it but it still only shows these. Got any more ideas? I am really liking what I'm doing with BB and RB but want to add tracks.

under options /playback does it have line in to check off? That's the important one.
By the way what Operating System are you using?

Thanks John. No it does not have line in to check off. I think the OS is Windows XP Professional Ver 2002 service pack 3. Is this the right answer to your question?

I am now guessing I must get another driver or something so I think I am back to taking laptop to computer wiz as I have no line in/mic volume output for recording and I have spent hours today looking at every option I had to add this in.

Well XP should have all of the check boxes. I guess you could reinstall the drivers for the sound card.

Hi again, bluegen--

Please list the brand and model of laptop you've got.

Also, please go into the Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager and locate your Soundcard on the list, tell us exactly what it says there as the soundcard identifier. While you have it highlighted, RightClick and choose Properties just to give a check to the report and you can also have it automatically go looking for a possible updated driver on the web from there, or rollback to a previous driver as well.

OK, I spent lots of research on this and found out my audio card was set up for Vista. I have a ACER Aspire 5515 and have found it does not have the mic/line in output. The only solution I have seen is to change the audio card (since it's a laptop I guess the chip). I am going to talk to my computer people and see what they recommend. The tower versions do have the mic/line in out but not the laptops. If this is true then once I get it replaced and working I will let everyone know. Thanks for everyones help with this issue and I hope to update soon.

You don't have XP you have Vista or at least that's what my research says. That realtek card is also sort of strange to set up. It has these software programmable jacks of different colours. Maybe someone here with this setup can help but at this point I'm lost.

Well, you could save some time and go ahead and pick out a good quality USB sound device. If recording music is your goal, that would come along in time anyway as you discovered how much better the dedicated device can record multitracks than the built in soundcard can.

I recommend the M-Audio USB series of stuff, it is good with great sound quality, and perhaps most importantly, is M-Audio is known for good driver software support for all of the existing Operating Systems.

Most laptops sold in the last couple of years do NOT have line-in jacks. It's not that the sound chip doesn't support it, it's that the vendors chose not to include it with recent laptops. Pretty much all you get nowadays for input is a mono microphone input. I've noticed that most Dells, HPs, Gateways, Acers, Sony's, and Toshibas no longer include the line-in jack. You're probably going to find that you will not be able to replace the onboard sound chip; even if you did, you still won't have the necessary stereo jacks, even if you somehow get the right drivers.

As Mac mentioned, you would be better off with a USB external sound card solution.

John,
That's right. If I remember correctly didn't you buy a laptop and noticed you didn't have any line in?
I vote for the outboard card MAudio USB

Ok, I just checked out the M-Audio Fast track 2 input (mic & guitar) and makes sense because I agree I cannot change the chip. But now I have the same question in a different form. How does the recorded tracks and the input track monitor at the same time? Does it come back thru the computer USB to M box and use the M box output to monitor? Again I think that is what it should do but it really did not say it and it sounds like you guys use them. Will this work for what I am doing? I am just adding one track at a time. Sure would be great to have a real 32 X 32 like we did in New Orleans years ago but those days are long gone. Now just working in my bedroom.

Thanks to both of you for taking time for this very helping discussion.

Jeff

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
