In RB, the mixer, is there a compressor, or is it just the peak limit? I want to level out my vocals and can't make it work. I have used dynamics to bring up the volume but want to compress to even out the vocals. Thanks

Hi Critter,

The PGMusic compressor is the plug-in called "Dynamics" which, from the sounds of it, you have used. This plug-in is actually dual purpose in that it is both a compressor and an expander and you can engage either one individually by check-marking the appropriate boxes. With vocals, I tend you use a freeware plug-in called Blockfish. I find that this works well for my voice (it's also very simple to use in that the number of buttons and dials is minimal).

If you are interested, you can get Blockfish from...

Noel

PGDynamics is the included compressor.

Lower the threshold and raise the ratio (in the compressor section) to compress more ...

There are tons of free compressors out there, Blockfish recommended above is a decent one. Combined with Spitfish (their de-esser) it handles vocals well. I like Classic Compressor also for a free choice.

So..........if I download these freebees........how do you incorporate them to use in RB? Dumb question but I still live in analog land, I'm sure you guys realize that by now, duh........LOL. Also, what does the peak limiter do? I've played with it, but no good results, probably because I am trying to make it do something it doesn't want to do.

Create a folder where you will keep your new plugins. Call it VST or something.
A plugin is a .dll file (along with some others sometimes), put the new .dll file(s) in that folder.

Open a seq file, go to an audio track and click the little arrow to edit the DX FX like you do to get to the PG plugins.
Scroll to the bottom of the list and you will see 'add VST'. Click that and go to your folder and select the new .dll file.

That's it. You have to do it once for each new plugin, but once found they are remembered in the list.

You may want to experiment with the presets in PG Dynamics. I use the Main Mix Gentle Leveling with nice results. Another compressor that is often mentioned here is the KVR Classic Compressor found here.

That link is dead in the long run. Kjaehaus shut down their site.

The plugin can still be found as part of the Classic set here -

OK, here is where the compressor from GVST really shines. Critter is looking for some instruction on dynamics processing. The GVST Compressor shows you graphically what happens to your signal both in the 'curve' that is being used in the processor, as well as a waveform display of the input and output signals.

Here's a screenshot:

and here is the download link:

Critter - download this thing and play around with the threshold and ratio controls until you understand what is happening. I suggest feeding a very simple signal into the compressor - a low frequency sine wave (flute patch) would do nicely, or an old school TB303 type kick drum patch or low tom patch.

Then, play with the limit and softness controls.

Finally, play around with the upper row of knobs for the makeup gain and so forth.

Bob,

I use a whole bunch of plugins from Graham / GVST. He's one of the only freeware developers that I've actually donated to via PayPal, because his tools were exactly what I needed to learn a couple of signal processing techniques - dynamics processing being one of them.

Once I saw that he had a little scope timeline display on his compressor with the input and output signals displayed, I immediately gravitated to it, being an engineer.

I've used this particular plugin a couple of times to teach some younger kids how dynamics processing works. When they see the signals change, it seems to give them an 'aha' moment.

I use other dynamics processing, but this is the one that made things really click in my head as to what was going on. Seems to work with other folks as well.

I'm fooling around with PG Dynamics, it's a work in progress, if I can keep everything in PG all the better. Thanks

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
