BIAB defaults to triplet resolution for swing feel when entering notation. Since I do a lot of Latin music, I normally prefer straight eighths feel, so I uncheck the default. However, if I do want a triplet in the song, it takes three or four keystrokes to set it and three or four more to return to straight feel:

3: Click on Opt, check/uncheck the box, OK
-- or --
4: Pref, Notation, check/uncheck the box, OK

I would love to have this checkbox on the Editable Notation screen. It could be next to Note/Rest/Mono/Clean - plenty of room.

One click, & done!

Full disclosure: I posted this wish years ago. It's just that, after doing a song today, I felt renewed frustration and thought I should see if anyone else agrees. It would help make BIAB's great notation entry method even better.

I agree entirely. The pointless difficulty of changing that switch back and forth has driven me nuts three days a week for years, for exactly the same reasons it bothers Matt.

Please do move that switch right out front somewhere!

Thanks, allis. I would hope they don't even need to move it; they could add another checkbox as suggested and have that work in either of two places. Changing it in one place changes it in both.

Well thought out! There's no sense in inconveniencing those accustomed to using it from the old place.

If the triplet/straight switch were obvious and easy to see, I think it would clear up some of the confusion new users naturally feel about entering triplets. They could see what the two modes do with one click.

Yep. Good point about new users.

And yes, in general I do not recommend changing anything about the old method of selecting swing/straight resolution; just add the new shortcut. But if forced to choose one, I would choose the shortcut.

Thanks for helping this get some momentum this time, everyone.

By the way, I should point out that there is another way to toggle this, as described in FAQ #25.

Right-click above the score, change the number, click OK.

It still takes three keystrokes.

Many wish list items call for and entire rewrite of BIAB. If BIAB had customizable menus and tool bars like may programs (Sonar, et. al), you can choose to have a button or not. A newbie and a veteran would have quite different tool bars, and, with all the various utilizations of BIAB, we would all have different sets ups - balancing clutter with convenience.

Not to go off topic ....

I support this also. Although BIAB was probably never intended as anything other than an entry level notation device (as much out of necessity for sight reading, making slight adjustment to imported scores or to view/edit patterns in this format)

I don't blame people that want to use BIAB as a one-stop shop for most of their input needs. It makes sense and in any case the program has tried in other ways to be all-things-to-all-people over the years so they have to expect this kind of request.

Thought I would revisit this thread after nearly a year.

Alan raises another aspect of this request, which is how effective BIAB is to enter notation. I have used music software of all sorts for decades, and as a professor, my students and I reviewed many additional educational versions. After experience with many ways to enter notation, I still always start a song with BIAB. Whatever its intent, it is perhaps THE BEST way to get a melody quickly into the computer if you do not play a keyboard. I sometimes take the song into other software for finishing, so I don't even use BIAB as 'one-stop shopping', but I still start there.

With that as a background, today I transcribed another Latin song by entering the melody with the mouse, and often had to flip back and forth from triplet to straight resolution. Please, PG Music, consider adding this one little checkbox to make the workflow easier. Thank you.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
