Hi All:

Another overstated thread for sure...(my apologies in advance).

Being the BB Greenhorn that I am, I decided to try some other VSTi's that I have to see if I could get them to work.

I tried 2 out of the 3 that I have (NI Garritan Orchestra, and a Cronox3 from LinPlug)...I also have a Sampletank.

Not that this should matter, but I will state that they are obviously "lite" versions that came bundled with my Mackie Tracktion 3 DAW I bought a few years ago.

I believe all 3 have stand-alone capability...AND they "should" all be registered (I'll have to re-verify to be sure)...it was quite the process in the begining. In other words, I don't think they are necessarily monogomously tied to Tracktion.

At any rate, I tried loading them up, but when the interface pops up it is not responsive (in the sense that it won't generate sound...and the little piano keys don't move when I mouse click over them for example)...AND the GUI is a tad sparse, like...no patches can be found/changed...weird stuff...not normal operation IOW.

For Garritan, a message pops up and says it's not registered (GUI does launch however).

Of course I remember clicking on BB's message box to register it...but it opens up a directory...and from there I'm lost...I don't what it wants or where to find it etc. These VSTi's should respond whether I have a keyboard plugged in or not...as the Edirol does.

As usual, I'm probably missing something STUPID.

Thanks in advance,
Eric

I had a 'lite' version of a daw that included a vst plugin that was usable only in that daw, so that is a possibility to consider. When registering dialog pops up with a directory, it is looking for where you have the plugin on your drive, so navigate to the directory for the plugin you are trying to register (Garritan in your post) and it should be a .dll you are looking for. Can't say what directory or subdirectory it will be in, but the dialog should default to looking for .dlls so that should be all you see if there are any. Double click it and if it is usable in BIAB that should get you on your way.
Good luck.

Hi,
I'm a bit confused.
Are you trying to use the as a Stand alonne version or as a VSTi plug in.

best wishes

Both of those can be finicky I hear. Can you use the VSC DXi? If you can I'd say it's some sort of issue with the VSTi themselves.

If it says it's not registered and you are sure you registered it then there's a problem you have to deal with Garritan on.

I don't know anything about the others except sampletank. but I do know that ST and GPO need to have a patch (or patches) loaded into them before you will be able to hear any sounds.

Did you register it on that machine?
It's possible they were registered on a different machine and need to be re-registered.

Did you try to browse for the .dll file as suggested above when BiaB gives the pops up?

Hi All:

Silvertones: Yes, I can use the VSC DXi no problem. It'll "do" in a snap, but the sound does not compare to the Motif obviously. You mention you have to load everything...is that to say, sound by sound via a Windows directory vs a menu pull down within the VSTi GUI itself? True? Counter productive if so...rats. The less menus and hunting, the better...work flow is jammed enough! Arg!

I feel I wouldn't be missing much with Garritan either, as again, the Motif has a pretty diverse soundscape on it's own.

My others would be nice to toy with within BB, but again, not necessary...probably better suited for DAW work instead.

At this point in my greenhorn experience, I'm just trying to get some things to work so I can say I hashed them out if needed.

Again, back to the BB/RB swap-a-roo mentality...not too much of an issue.

However, the story may actually be different as I try to learn RB and attempt to use my other VSTi's...*sigh*

There's no doubt I'll be back to cast my line when the time comes...then again, it just might work without too much cranial fatigue...(good LUCK with that).

Thanks again...I'll widdle away at as microscopic time permits.

Regards,
Eric

Yes I know that the VSC is not that great. Just using it to diagnose your problem. If it works then so should others.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
