Hi John - All new hardware - cpu box (Dell), mouse (Dell), monitor (Viewsonic), and OS. I have tried with stock Dell, also a Logitech wireless.

Rechecked mouse settings, all standard. Can you clarify what you mean by "snap-to" settings. Is this a mouse setting or BIAB setting?

No funky behavior with any other programs.

Still weird. Still stumped.

Did you call PG Music Support?

The "Snap To" setting in Windows 7 is in Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, look for Mouse under Devices and Printers. Once in Mouse, look for Mouse Properties, Pointer Options.

By the way, do you by any chance have a cordless phone or microwave or other radio interference source next to your computer with its wireless mouse?

Matt - Yeah, probably will call PG in a bit. And yes, have a cordless receiver land line phone in in proximity. For grins I disconnected all wire and moved it far away - no help.

Kelso,

As I read through this, a thought that occurred to me is "Do you use any of the Windows 'Ease of Access' tools?"

Regards,
Noel

Or could it be the case of the strange aurora surrounding Kelso?

It happened to my wife. She complained the mouse pointer was all over the screen and didn't go where she was trying to point. I stood behind her and saw that the mouse behaviour was erratic but when I used the mouse to try to see what the problem was the mouse worked correctly. She takes over the mouse and the erratic behaviour returns.

We tried a couple of wireless mice I had lying around. They would work for a while and then start the same problem.

Finally the last option I had for her, a Logitech Wireless Mouse and keyboard combination, seemed to work OK and she has not had a problem since. Strange and we still can not understand what happened.

Could be an electrical charge. Try a wired mouse for a laugh.

Thanks. I mostly believe Kevin's "could it be the case of the strange aurora surrounding Kelso?" John - did try several wired and one wireless. No help.

OK, long shot. It's usb based right? Is it possible something in Band in a Box is also using a USB port and there is a conflict?

Is there a standard mouse port on the box and have you tried one of the 'serial' mice?

I'm just shooting at grounhogs here.

Have you checked out mouse properties in Windows control panel / MOUSE - if you exported settings from your old PC then the mouse issue could have travelled across machines this way. I know some people port stuff using aome kind of windows wizard and this could account for a setting travelling between two PCs.

Hi Kelso,

Do you have one of the hard drive versions of Band-in-a-Box? If so, are you running the program directly from the USB drive?

I'm just thinking that if there was something fishy with the installation on that HD, that would explain why the problem followed you from one computer to the other, and would probably be fixed by ginving BIAB a fresh install to the C drive and running it from there instead..

ZeroZero - Yes - I have reviewed mouse settings numerous times for several mice. And in my new computer I did not export any drivers.

Kent - I do have the HD version but did the install to my internal HD. Also, this phenomena occurs (only for me in the entire universe)for previous versions of BIAB and for two completely different sets of hardware and for two different operating systems. (XPx32 and W7x64)

I have had that issue in the long ago past, but don't remember what I did to fix it. Probably a new mouse/driver. But I remember the problem.

How about this which I found with a google of "weird mouse behavior"

It is possible that you have been infected by a malware (virus, trojan, etc), because it's possible to "control" the mouse through coding by modify mouse messages.

My suggestion is to start Windows in safe mode to avoid running any third party programs/drivers when you logged on. In safe mode you can check your mouse behaviour. Check several times (logging out and logging in back again in safe mode a few times). If in all safe mode sessions the mouse is acting properly then you definitely infected by some malware. It's possible that the malware was written poorly resulting that weird mouse behavior.

Oh, while you are in safe mode, you may want to remove any autorun programs to avoid that malware gets activated again. You can use a startup manager like Start-Q to do the removal, and then run antivirus to find out what malware infected you.

If it's only a band in a box problem it would seem that asking pgmusic for a fresh download of the program only should fix the problem. That IS possible. I had a problem with a function recently that has been identified, fixed, and I have a new version sent to me.

This is the most responsive company to deal with, and any problem you have is discussed, sometimes in a meeting, and then solved. Odd behaviours can be something in your system, but sending a new download of just the exe file should result in a fix IF it is related to the software.

Other problems, that are computer related, are obviously NOT a band in a box problem and need to viewed as such.

John asked what I was going to ask. Does the mouse work in Word, in a browser, etc? IF the erratic control just in BIAB? I did not read the whole thread so I don't see if it is optical or a ball mouse. If it is optical, what is it sliding in? I have seen people use an optical mouse on top of a plexiglass desk top and the reflection from the plexiglass causes grief with the sensors that read the coordinates of the laser. Driver would be last on my list because most of them will work with just fine the generic PS2 mouse driver. Unless you bought a specific mouse like a Kensington Ball Mouse or something else with weird control points the stock PS2 driver will be fine. I have a Logitech on one, a Kensington on another, a generic USB mouse on the laptop running the BIAB and the only one I have had any grief on is this other laptop because it has one of those annoying touchpads and before I could disable the "double tap to click" feature I had to install the Dell specific driver for it. My very first guess would have been like a couple of others suggested, that the acceleration and pointer speed are too high and it is jumping across a whole screen from just one small movement.

I am using the new 1040XTRAEZ form this year. It has just 2 lines.

1. How much did you make in 2023?
2. Send it to us.

OK - After years with this BIAB problem, submitting two posts here (last one 20 months ago) and a call to PG help, all with no success, and virtually no one having the same problem, I now know the cause of the problem. I'm posting this partly as a form of self-congratulation, and partly to see if anyone would be kind enough to try to duplicate it.

So this problem has persisted through many versions of BIAB, two versions of Windows, and two computers. So it's not hardware or system software.

The Problem: Whenever I click anywhere in BIAB, my mouse pointer, after successfully executing the click, instantly appears at the far right of the screen, half way up. I then need to move the pointer back to the work area. Very disconcerting at the least.

The cause - this happens (I know now) ONLY when the Visible Metronome is enabled (Options/Prefs/Count-in/Met./Metronome Options). If it is set to be located top right, the cursor always repositions as described. If set to locate in the center, the cursor moves somewhere else. If the Visible Metronome is set to "No visible metronome" (disabled), the cursor stays put, well behaved.

I'd be grateful if someone would check this out and let me know. Here's a good test.

Start a new File. Enable the Visible Metronome for "Whole Song, Top, 1234, then OK, OK. Double click in measure 1. See if the cursor stays put in measure 1 or relocates to the far right of the screen, half way up.

Disable Visible Metronome. Double click in measure 1. See if cursor stays put.

Thanks.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
