Hi,

I wish to export a melody with chords to XML to import in my notation program. It used to work, however this is likely the first time I use the feature since the 2018 version. And it doesn't work; there is an error when trying to open in my notation program, but even BIAB just opens with a blank screen.

Is this a bug or are there any settings that can explain this?
I tried with a few songs also, same result.
I just downloaded the latest version and will try that.

EDIT!!! Installed Build 513, same result.
RE-EDIT!! Just confirmed it worked with my 2016 version two month ago, just before installing 2018.

Same computer that it worked on before.
EDIT!! Windows 7 updates have been added to the computer;

The computer is completely offline.

Dan

Dan,

Have you tried ignoring the error?

When I load a BIAB XML file into MuseScore, I sometimes get an error but I just ignore it and the file loads ok.

Regards,
Noel

Thanks for the reply, Noel96,

Yes I get this all the time, and it usually works, but this time I just get an empty page. The info must be there from the size of the XML file.

In Musescore, clicking "Show Details" on the error window always give the same result:

"Fatal error: line 6 column 58 Expected "#" or '[a-zA-Z]', but got''.

Dan

EDIT!! BTW, I think many of those errors I normally get come from BIAB not exporting tuplets the way Musescore expects, because I get a lot of measures that are too long, like 4 1/2 beats or 5 beats in a 4/4 measure when there are tuplets present. I have to insert a new measure, re-enter correctly, then delete the bad measure.

Dan,

Have you tried opening your MGU file directly into MuseScore.

It's experimental but MuseScore does read BIAB files. (I've had mixed success with this. Sometimes I need to modify half a dozen bars or so and sometimes it works fine.)

Regards,
Noel

Oooooohhhh, HUGE thanks for that one!!!

It worked, just the melody line and chords.

That is what I am looking for right now, however,
I often like to print leadsheets with two parts:
1) melody line and
2) soloist line with the scales instead of solo.

Can this be achieved somehow opening the MGU directly into Musescore?
I don't suppose, but hoping.... smile

EDIT: I guess it wouldn't be possible because the scales are not in the MGU file, just the melody, style and the chords.

RE-EDIT!! Yes it is possible! I just moved the scales from soloist to melody in BIAB, saved the file under a new name and re-opened in Musescore. Worked like a charm. Only thing, it has to be done in two steps, one for the melody and one for the scales, but it can be done!

Thanks again Noel!

Dan

To my knowledge, it has been possible for several years to open a BIAB SGU file in MuseScore. There was no need to use Music XML.

I have found that, surprisingly, MuseScore is the only notation program that gives a decent error message when importing Music XML. And it’s free.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
