I have a quick question.

I have BIAB Version 2018, downloaded from Sweetwater Music. It cost $129.00.

Now, after I have it and I start exploring the BIAB world on their website, I see a product called BIAB Pro, also $129.00. It includes BIAB 2018, also has 300 RealTracks included.

Also on the same list, is BIAB PlusPAK. It also includes BIAB 2018, and has RealTracks sets 278-300 included. You guessed it...$129.00.

How are these different?

It seems like I got the stripped-down version, when there are versions offering more, for the same price.

Last question. Is it possible to download RealTracks sets 278-300 on their own, as an upgrade to my existing BIAB 2018? Or do I need to download each set for $29.00 each? Ouch.

Thank you for making it this far...any help is appreciated!

Short answer is: BIAB PlusPAK is "only" an upgrade, you need at least a previous full version of the program to enjoy and succesfully install the 2018 PlusPAK.

The offerings from PGMusic sometimes cause a little confusion.

First of all, the basic BIAB program is exactly the same in every PAK you buy; it's not like some programs where they remove programmatic features based on the level you buy. The difference is in the number of MIDI styles, RealStyle, RealTracks, RealDrums, and SuperMIDI Tracks you get.

The entry level version of BIAB is the ProPAK. A number of folks on the forum have been after PGMusic to rename this, as Pro tends to imply "top of the line". The ProPAK is actually the entry level version of BIAB. It gives you just enough content to create some songs, understand how the program works, and get comfortable with it. For people that like BIAB, most will upgrade it to one of the other PAKs after working with the ProPAK for a short period of time. The ProPAK gives you about 300 RealTracks (grouped as RealStyles, or Bands), a handful of SuperMIDI tracks, and some of the MIDI Styles. This is the lowest cost package.

Next is the MegaPAK. This gives you more content. You get about 500 RealTracks, also grouped as RealStyles (Bands), a few more SuperMIDI Tracks, but you do get ALL the MIDI styles.

The UltraPAK is next. This basically gives you most everything (but not everything). You get all the RealTracks and RealDrums (except a few that are offered with special PAKs), all the SuperMIDI Tracks, and all the MIDI Styles.

The Audiophile edition is basically the same as the UltraPAK, except that the RealTracks are uncompressed WAV files instead of compressed WMA files.

The PlusPAK is a special case. It really only applies when you already have the previous UltraPAK. What it does is takes the previous UltraPAK and gives you everything new to bring you up to date as if you had the new UltraPAK, without buying the UltraPAK upgrade. It assumes you have all the previous content. The web site is pretty clear that the PlusPAK requires the previous installation of the UltraPAK (or previously also the EverythingPAK).

If you currently have only the ProPAK, and you can affort it, I would upgrade to the UltraPAK, and then when the new version comes out, upgrade using the PlusPAK.

The downside of doing PlusPAK upgrades over the years is that if you ever have to re-install, you have to first install the first base UltraPAK version you have, and then apply each PlusPAK in turn until you are up-to-date. If you do an UltraPAK to UltraPAK upgrade (which costs more), you pretty much have everything already in that new UltraPAK

Hope this made sense:

I'm reasonably sure you purchased the Band-in-a-Box Pro PAK from Sweetwater. You didn't mention when you purchased it but Sweetwater's website is showing the Pro PAK is currently priced at $99 US. If you recently purchased it you may want to contact your Sweetwater representative.

All packages offer the 2018 Band-in-a-Box program. The Windows packages also offer 2018 RealBand. The difference in the packages is how much accessory content is included. The Pro Pack includes the least content. The Mega PAK is the next step up in both price and content. The Ultra PAK, formerly called the UltraPlus PAK includes all available content except for Xtra Styles and bonus content. The Audiophile provides the content in lossless file and lossy file.

The PLUS PAK provides the current year program and the content that is new for this year. The Plus PAK is an easy way for users that upgrade every year to keep current.

Mike, since docmidi answered your specific question and jford's answer to your question is much more comprehensive I'll suggest jford follow your suggestion.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
