"Blue Autumn" is an original jazz composition with the melody recorded using a tenor saxophone patch, and a solo that also uses a tenor patch, but is played in double time. The soloist used was 31 Coltrane 16ths slower tempo, available with Soloist Set 2. This is a good example of "mixing and matching" styles with soloists. The song has a "swing 8ths" rhythm, but the soloist used is a 16ths note soloist. The combination is very effective.

"Who Knows" is an original composition in the style of a Shearing swing tune. A single note piano melody was recorded for this tune, and the melody was then harmonized by Band-in-a-Box using the George Shearing Quint harmony. The solo was generated by Band-in-a-Box using Soloist 40 G Shearing Quintet (available with Soloist Set 2), and also uses the same harmony. When this soloist is used, the harmony is automatically applied, so you can get this wonderfully unique sound in your own tunes with a single mouse click!

"Not Like Before" features a tenor saxophone patch for both the melody, which was performed by the composer, and the soloist, which was generated by Band-in-a-Box using soloist 31 Coltrane-16ths slower tempo. This is an example of creatively mixing and matching soloist and styles with different feels. The style is an 8ths swing style, while the soloist has a 16ths feel. This makes for an exciting double-time solo. Notice how, despite the fact that this is a very busy soloist, there is virtually no playing in bars 2 and 3 of the solo. This is an example of how the use of space makes the movement later on effective.

"Goin' My Way?" is an original 36-bar jazz tune, with a piano melody performed by the composer. The solo in the middle was created using soloist 43 Wynton K Piano, available with Soloist Set 2. This soloist creates a modern sounding swing solo. Listen for the use of a motive which is altered rhythmicly in bars 3-6 of the solo.

"Never Thought I'd Fall" is a slow swing tune featuring a melody and solo played using a harmonica patch. The solo was created using soloist 77 Toots T Harmonica, available with Soloist Set 2. In this soloist, the eighth notes are delayed slightly which gives the piece a laid back feel.

"Tonal Recall" is an example of a great feature in the Band-in-a-Box Soloist called "trade 4s". This feature can be selected with ANY soloist, and is great for practicing responding to a phrase that is played by the Band-in-a-Box soloist. The soloist will play for 4 bars, and will then lay out for 4 bars, so you can play. In this example, the feature is used differently. The solo was created using soloist 220 Tenor Sax w/ trade/4s., which automatically loads the style Jazfours.sty. With this combination, the tenor sax solos for four bars, then the drums solo for four bars, and this goes back and forth for the entire second chorus.
