When I go to the notation window the track type default is single channel. I can change it to guitar, my preferrence, but I have to do this every time I open a file. Is there a way to make the notation window track type default to guitar?

Did you reSave the file after making the change?

No, I was just closing it and opening another one. Saving it with the guitar channel selected works, thanks.
