The Dance Floor

Just me experimenting with a dance tune.

BiaB Style = Dance Floor MIDI funk synth solo
Tempo = 110 BPM

I deleted the guitar, strings, and utility tracks
Bass - Ample Bass - YanYang - preset - Slap Jam
Piano - Keys of the 70's - preset - Logical EP200 Full
Drums - Presonus - Presence2 - preset - stadium kit

I am playing via my wind controller the following Swam instruments: Trumpet 1, trumpet 2, tenor sax, bari sax, and the alto sax. Via my keyboard controller the B3. I am also playing the lead guitar.

As always all comments welcomed.

Mario,

Terrific work with the WC! Well played. Musical.
Nice guitar work, too.
Good levels on everything.
Those Swam instruments sure sound good.

During the early part when the sax is the lead instrument, I thought it should be mixed a bit more towards center (like slightly-left-of-center). I felt the same way when the guitar became the lead instrument - that it was panned too hard right. Thought that would benefit from being slightly-right-of-center. Although when they were trading-licks, that panning worked. (Even then, I think having the two slightly panned would work, though you might want to increase the panning at that point to some degree for more separation). Opinions, of course.
(and NOT to detract from how nice the playing is...)

Cool stuff.

Mario,

This sounds great! Love the tune and those horns are outstanding!

Awesome mix as well. Awesome all around!

Nice!

I'll also complain about non-centered leads, because I like to complain. wink

And perhaps a touch more 'verb on the horns, to make things glue together a bit more.

Fun listen! Horns are cool.

Grooving number. I like your lead. I'm fine with the instrument placement. I guess it's is preference. I felt like the soloists were on different sides of the stage.

It's good to experiment. One never knows what might happen.

Good work and sounded like a fun jam along.

I have a BC on one of my keys, but I could never seem to get the hang of using it properly. Yours sounds pretty effortless.

You are multi-talented Mario.
Is that bass player on speed?

Hey hey, Nice song with a perfect title, I can see some dancing going on. Recording a big band is difficult and you have managed to tackle the work well. I would suggest that in a dance motiff the drumset needs to be a tad more alive, the kick is fine but the snare/highhat etc could use some eq. The horns have a great verb.

You're right Floyd. I spend a lot of time getting all of the volumes correct and forgot about the stereo field. I made the mistake of placing the backing horns first and then finding open areas for the alto and guitar. In other words 180 degrees backwards!

Thanx for bringing it to my attention.

Thanx Bob. That mix was not easy for me to do so I'm glad that it came out OK.

I did have more reverb on the horns but I thought that it was too much. But yur are right a tad more may help. Thanx for bringing that up, appreciate constructive criticism.

Thanx Herb.

Using my wind controller took a long time to get it somewhat right: I'm sill trying to really learn it. Using you BC for volume is the same as using my wind controller for volume and they are perfect for horn and string parts. Many times I get excited and forget to use mine properly and I end up with a straight line volume automation. Time to try again. Thus I know your pain.

Thanx Donny for the drum suggestions. Input like this helps me learn so I appreciate those comments.

Oh man, this makes me feel like dancing!

I want to dance the night away!!!!

Could I use that for a song title or has it been done already?

Either way, this little butt wagger really cooks!!

Yep, you are also one heck of a musical chef, Mario. This really rocks. I've usually seen the dance floor from the bandstand. It always seemed like such a scary place. Now if I was on this dance floor you build. I'd definitely be one of those wanna-be players staring at the guitar player (and bass player of course).

Cool Real Tracks. Groovy!!

Sheesh man ... if we counted right you are playing on seven tracks. Amazing.

Throw in your talent, the technology and BiaB and that is a heckuva creative production.

Most cool!

Thanx Marty.
As I also watched the dance floor from the bandstand I can't dance at all!
Stop staring, I'm getting nervous!

Thanx so much J&B for this wonderful review. This is the most adventurous experiment that I have ever attempted. I'm glad that you liked it.

PS - by most adventurous experiment I'm not counting anything I did in the 1960s!

It amazes me what you can do with that wind controller.

Good stuff!

Well done Mario. What a versatile instrument that wind controller is. B3 sounds pretty cool as well. Loved the guitar work. Well done

Thanx Scott for listening and commenting on this little song of mine. I appreciate it.

Hi Mario ...

That's some dang nice experimenting. BIAB offers so many toys to play with - it's amazing. Love the bass and organ in particular. Moving the lead instruments slightly closer to center is probably a good suggestion. But it works fine as is. The wider separation, should you chose not to move the leads closer to center, if you go back to this one, might benefit by bringing the drums up a bit, thus filling more of the center soundscape.

Regardless of all that, this is a funky little tune that compelled me to listen twice. I always love how you play with the various elements of BIAB ... you do it so nicely!

Take care,

Alan
