Well, sometimes it is the simple things.

I had another back of the cocktail napkin lyric song and I recorded it, and HATED IT. I was like, man, this horrible. Garbage can. No way to fix it. Then I went to sleep.

When I woke up, an angel whispered in my ear:

Don't do it in C. Just change it to the key A and you will be fine.

So I did. Now I don't think it is quite so horrible anymore. Just a key change. Who would have known???

LOVE WITHOUT PAROLE

V1

Yesterday we were eighteen, I can smell that summer rain
I still miss your breathless kiss, and how your sweetness felt like pain
And yeah, I remember you, and when I do, I feel in debt, but no regrets
So how come you're the thing that hurts me
the most when I look back
why would a loving Universe make a heart that works like that

CH

I think you own some part of me and I can't buy it back
I'm a hostage to your memory, why did you do that
and there's some tiny hole inside my heart where you will always be
and I'm doing love without parole, oh yeah
And no one knows but you
how much I loved you
and no one knows but you
what love without parole has done
to me

V2

They say the man upstairs, always has a plan
But the way he makes our hearts, I just don’t understand
One day the world is young, next day the world is old
One day your heart’s on fire, next day it’s all gone cold

CH

I think you own some part of me and I can't buy it back
I'm a hostage to your memory, why did you do that
and there's some tiny hole inside my heart where you will always be
and I'm doing love without parole, oh yeah
And no one knows but you
how much I loved you
and no one knows but you
what love without parole has done
to me
to me, oh oh
this love without parole
this love without parole
is killing me

David,

Love this... It sounds like it could be one of those songs in a hit summer movie.

Great vocal and mix. The piano is excellent.

Love Without Parole - a stroke of genius, right there. BRAVO.

Absolute genius, from the first note to the last, from the first word to the last. Hats off to you, sir, a thousandfold.

P.S. Floyd has it SPOT ON. What more can I say? Nothing more. BRAVO.

Sounds like you are really feeling the lyrics on this one Dave. I hear pain, anquish, hurt, depths of emotions. Glad you pulled that napkin out of the can, and produced it into a song.

Hey thanks Bob!!

I am glad you liked it.

Yes, I had almost given up on it, until that angel whispered in my ear, and I said, yeah, it's in the wrong key!!!

🙂

Oh doh!!

HI David,

What a great lyric and tune! Excellent choice of backing tracks. This is 0one of your better vocals - none of them are bad - but this one really shines. I like your voice in the lower register.

And yeah, sometimes I wonder what His plan is. But, it seems to end up better than if I'd followed my thoughts.
Great choice dragging this out of the trash can.. You're sounding better and better - I know, it's hard to improve on excellence - but you somehow manage.

Best to you,

Alan

Nice work.

Hi, David.

What they said - good write, emotionally sung.

Yeah, changing key can make a huge difference - even with "robot" vocalists. I've put tracks together and the worked on the vocal and it sounded bad. Change key, and Wow, what a difference.

Good think that messenger got to you in time! smile

And you can grab MIDI for those piano tracks? Something I need to remember.

David, "I'm doing love without parole", what a great line.
I'm glad you didn't give up on this one.
Outstanding song.
PS - God works in strange ways doesn't he.

David, it’s always a good idea to take a second look at the throwaways. This is really good with a fine emotionally delivered lyric. I keep saying this, one of your best, Tom

David, love everything about this song. It's just ridiculously awesome. I probably would have loved it in C, too. Nice one!
Posted By: Birchwood Re: LOVE WITHOUT PAROLE: David Snyder - 03/10/24 02:06 PM
Hello David,

The way you create your songs sounds familiair, except for the angel.
I walk across all the keys, find one that looks alright, change it again and often I come back to the first key I started when making the song.
What does that tell me? Nothing else than I have to walk that path of trial and error, again and again.
No angels, no nothing, else then my battered head that can turn a problem into something creative...

But since you have that angel, you are a lucky guy. The song is very good, the lyrics too and you sing it like out of the bottom of your heart and toes.
So, like I said, (again) a very good song. That's actually what I can expect from you and you always deliver ;-)

Thanks Floyd! I appreciate it, man!

That's good advice on the angel.

Should I also love her like the devil when she gets back home???

Excellent write, and I really like the way you deliver these lyrics.
I think it was a good idea to go 3 semitones down, because (at least in my opinion) your voice sounds better there without losing its emotional impact.
Good stuff!

David,

The melody and lyrics are somewhat reminiscent of John Lennon.
it's very beautiful.
And it's a slightly sad love song.
The accompaniment is also perfect for this song.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Best regards.

Who would have known??? Your angel, I guess. And now us. Love the title, then the song strengthened that feeling. I really like the melody on this one, too. Man, I like how you produce it all with such a good vocal. Feelings. Honest feelings. Loved it all, David.

The 1st bar or so sounds a bit "crisp".
After that all is fine with the world because the song wins and that is the key.
I've been two & a half months without a decent listening computer...today I'M BACK!
Excellent David - there's a little sibilance here n there as well and a squeak or two but you did a fine, fine job.

Copy that.
Posted By: David Snyder Re: LOVE WITHOUT PAROLE: David Snyder - 03/16/24 01:55 PM
Thanks David.

Yes on the piano tracks I haven't found one yet that doesn't have a midi attached to it, I think it's probably because they played all of the piano on electronic pianos and captured the MIDI by default for all of the recordings.

I could be wrong about this but I highly doubt they mic'ed any real pianos.

At any rate if you're in band in a box all you have to do is solo the track and save the file as MIDI and you have that track as MIDI.

Or if you're in Real Band, you can simply generate a track and make sure you have the generate a real chart item checked as well and it will provide the real track and the midi right below it.

I've used this feature hundreds of times, and I almost always use the piano parts as midi which I then run through my Abbey Road Grand software.

David

I'm glad you didn't throw that away because I wouldn't have had the opportunity to hear this and also regret that I didn't think of that awesome title!
It's a lovely ballad with the right amount of emotion in the vocal and melody!
David, you're on fire these days, rolling out one great tune after another!

Take care, TB

Well, aren’t you happy that this did not end up in the garbage?! Lovely lyric and melody.

The key of A suits you well and your vocal sounds full of heart and soul.

Good one!

No matter what key, this song would speak to me, nothing horrible, just superb love song full of true questions - very easy to relate to. "why would a loving Universe make a heart that works like that", that is the ultimate question... and if Universe would answer, the answer would be 42.

Title, the band (amazing piano), chords, melody, vocals (great falsetto note) - all are exceptionally great for another classic pop song which even John Lennon would be jealous that he didn't write it. Now I'm all tears, maybe I should write lyrics on this handkerchief and wait for an angel whisper...

Just listened "Don't Blame Me When I Fall" again earlier today and this one is there on the same top level of quality and emotion. Thank you!
