It's March 4th! My Birthday!
It's also Tom's Birthday!... a fact we discovered last March 4th...when we posted our first collaboration. Pure coincidence.
Figured we need to carry on the tradition.
I was working on a song that needed a solid lead part to hold it up and liven it up.
Who better to turn to than my "birthday brother".
(turnaround time was about 10 minutes, I think...)

The song is a reflection of my wife's habit of suddenly deciding that "there needs to be some changes around here".
Usually, that means a big honey-do list.
And a bunch of stuff going to Goodwill... or the garbage.
That usually includes my comfortable jeans and my favorite t-shirts.
"I just got those broken in!!!"....

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TOM!!!

SHE'S GOING THROUGH SOME CHANGES

she's been looking thru magazines
for a new style for her hair
paging thru catalogs
for something new to wear
it made this ol' boy nervous
that i might be on some list
she says some thing are worth keeping
then seals it with a kiss

   she's going through some changes
   going through her things
only hanging on to what she wants
for the pleasure that it brings
   as she rearranges
   i thank my lucky stars
   despite all the changes
she hasn't had.. a change of heart

she's traded out the furniture
hung new pictures on the wall
there's a brand new pair of puppies
prancing up and down the hall
the air smells of jasmine
there's jazz on the radio
what's next to be upended
heaven only knows

   she's going through some changes
   going through her things
only hanging on to what she wants
for the pleasure that it brings
   as she rearranges
   i thank my lucky stars
   despite all the changes
she hasn't had.. a change of heart

like some texas twister
she's headed wherever the wind may blow
but she's holding on to this old cowboy
i'll be damned if i'm letting go

   she's going through some changes
   going through her things
only hanging on to what she wants
for the pleasure that it brings
   as she rearranges
   i thank my lucky stars
   despite all the changes
she hasn't had.. a change of heart

   i thank my lucky stars
she hasn't had.. a change of heart

Thanks for listening! Comments welcome.

Hi Floyd (and Tommy),

happy birthday!
Since I started with this forum I have listened to 60 songs of yours and I liked them all. This is number 61.
And again I'm looking at the familiar white text on the black background and have my windows mediaplayer open. And I'm enjoying the lyrics and the great arrangement, the vocals and well known harmonies. Tommy's guitar is the icing on the cake.
I just love it and I'm looking forward to many more songs.
Back to the next listen.

Love it! Great sounding track.
Happy birthday fellas!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GUYS!! And, we're the ones who get the gift! Where does one begin with this one. Fun and energy. The chorus explodes with the energizing vocal and sweet guitar riffs. It's the kind of song you want to have on the car radio, cranked, driving down and open highway. It feels alive with the declaration of a new beginning-depth and excitement. Simply loved it all!! Have great birthdays!! Take care. Greg

Great line!

Happy Birthday Floyd and Tom!

+60 songs on the forum already...
Since december I have the pleasure of following the songwriters on this forum. It has been a pleasure and a good learning experience.

Again you deliver a classic song. Think I like this one even more because it really rocks! Tommy's guitar makes the difference I guess? BIAB is a super band, but in support of the live singer and soloist, it is at it's best!

A basic line up of the band, but very well produced, and live sounding!

On to the next 60 !

Wow.. over 60 songs??? You are a song-writing MACHINE, Floyd! I am totally impressed!

Well, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to both of you! Two fine song writers, good people, and I'd like to think personal friends! You both amaze and humble me on many different planes... (keep it up.. it ain't a bad thing to be humbled and amazed. )

Conceptually what I like most about this song is that it deals with a topic that would speak to a lot of people... Especially anybody entering the mid-life years where it's almost a rite of passage to redefine ourselves. And, in typical Floyd Jane style, you also made it into a love song.. the woman who changes everything else stops short of changing her man. Good ol' heartland values to seal the deal! We can complain about our spouses, but by damn, we ain't givin' up on 'em!

So you've handed your audience something to identify with, something to smile about, and ultimately, something to affirm the values of your majority audience. That's not just a home run, that's a grand slam!

Tommy, your guitar playing sure did make it sound "live".. in fact, if you subtract out the vocals, there were many places where the song sounded like Fleetwood Mac to me... They have a signature exchange between the guitar, bass and drums, and this song mirrored that. Whether it was intentional or not, I don't know, but if you're trying to find common identification ground with an older audience, Fleetwood Mac is a good starting point. They are one of the few universally loved bands.

Awesome job... I've said that probably 60 times already, it needs to be said again!

Thanks, Greg. Really appreciate all of that. A lot of the energy came from Tom's lead. It did all the right things in all the right places... (it's a birthday thing... smile )
As always, really excellent stuff there! (By now, I would be shocked to hear anything less.)

Happy Birthday to both of you! And as Greg said, we are the ones who get the gift!

Pat - always love to see your thoughts on a song... and once again, you make a very good point/observation...the aspects of a song that "speaks to people" is an important one... if you can make that general enough to include a wide audience, but specific enough to have the listener relate on an individual level, then you've got a winner. And that is always best done from a positive perspective. And, as you note, I generally turn that into a love song - that's a "market" thing.

Tom did a great job of punctuating this... the FM thing would be all his doing...

Thanks for listening and commenting...
Happy Birthday Floyd and Tommy,

Enjoyed listening to the song, professional production as usual, and reminds me I have to do a bit of spring cleaning myself around here, being the hoarder I am.

Thanks to all who have commented on the guitar part. This song is another fine example of floyd's craftsmanship. He is just flat out a great songwriter, performer, arranger, and engineer. Happy Birthday brother and thanks for including me in our annual project. I went to the Florida Strawberry Festival yesterday and saw Ricky Skaggs in concert. I was able to talk with Andy Leftwich after the show. He of course is the Real Tracks fiddle and mandolin player and he assured me he has been listening to our creations. Thanks to all for the B'Day wishes. Tom

Pat, In light of the recent court cases involving Sam Smith/ Tom Petty & Robin Thicke, Pharrell/ Marvin Gaye's estate, I must state that in no way shape or form was Fleetwood Mac intentionally copied or even thought about during the composition of the guitar parts. However, it is an interesting observation. I hope that you will come to our defense if called upon in a court of law to do so. LOL, Tom

A big, BIG sound that hangs together beautifully. Plays well loud without breaking up and I mean I did play it LOUD.
