Summer in Amsterdam
By David Snyder

V1

On a midnight train from Paris
Called the Orient Express
A young man sadly checked his bags
And he was shabbily dressed
A girl named Bernadette from the Montparnasse
Had ripped his soul apart
With French perfume, in a garret room
She broke a poet’s heart
Then he woke up stoned in Amsterdam
Sleeping in a poppy field
With thoughts of ending his own life
And a wound that wouldn’t heal
But when he made his way back into town
He met a girl name Anne-Marie
And everything changed on the spot
In the city of make believe

CH:

Yeah I forgot who I was
But I remembered who I am
And I think it happened all at once
That summer in Amsterdam
Yeah I forgot who I was
But I remembered who I am
And I think it happened all at once
That summer in Amsterdam

V2

So I got another Visa
And I decided to stay in town
Cause Anne-Marie she had eyes of green
And she wanted me to stick around
We made love about a million times
And I never got tired of it
I got reacquainted with the taste of truth
Every time I kissed her lips

CH:

Yeah I forgot who I was
But I remembered who I am
And I think it happened all at once
that summer in Amsterdam
Yeah I forgot who I was
But I remembered who I am
And I think it happened all at once
the moment I touched her hand
the moment I touched her hand
in Amsterdam

V3

So I guess you must be wondering
The rest of what happened to me
And all my time in Amsterdam now we’re closing out verse three
Well all that I can say is that some things were meant to be
Cause I hung around in Van Gogh’s town and I married Anne-Marie
yeah I married Anne-Marie

CH:

Yeah I forgot who I was
But I remembered who I am
And I think it happened all at once
that summer in Amsterdam
Yeah I forgot who I was
But I remembered who I am
And I think it happened all at once
that summer
that summer in Amsterdam

Marvellous work David.

I wish I had been on that trip to Amsterdam wink

Great imagery in the lyrics and very Dylanesque delivery. Shades of Lennon in the song vibe.

Great story by the way. Is it true?

Loved it.

Thanks Rec. Well, let's just say it is a composite.

An artist is not supposed to talk too much about his work. Ask Bob.

smile

Fun fact. A reporter once interviewed Dylan in Paris. She was warned never to speak again once she had asked him a question or he would get up and leave. He didn't like to be interrupted while he was thinking. So she asked him what he thought the definition of freedom was. He didn't say anything for about a half an hour, while he smoked some cigarettes.

Then, he said:

"Freedom is a lot like peace of mind. You don't know what it is until you don't have it anymore."

"Yeaaaaaah."

Gotta love Bob.

Hi David!

Your music is filling my office quite pleasingly. Very mellow. I'm also finding myself wanting to go to Amsterdam. smile

Great work!

Well this is just hilarious laugh we laughed our heads off , and yes... it really sounds like Dylan!
Who's this Anne-Marie character?

Just kidding, how could you tell that Anne-Marie indeed has green eyes?????

This is SO good. If there had never been a Bob Dylan or a Bruce Springsteen, you could have filled that spot.

Do you need any more than that?

this definitely leans towards Dylan and after the 1st listen the song took a long while to fade from my mind, as it got stuck in a loop, in a good way!

enjoyed

Like I have said before David, you have carved a niche for yourself out there with this type of song.
I so look forward to each new one. This latest story line comes from a very fertile songwriting mind.
Keep them coming please.

Hi David,

There's definitely no stopping you! Your songwriting is incredibly diverse. It seems to me that you fearlessly tackle any topic that springs to mind. From my perspective, such an approach to songwriting is probably one of the best approaches possible.

It's always entertaining to listen to what comes next from your songwriter's pen!

All the best,
Noel

David,

Great narrative that holds true through the song and a very catchy chorus... Floyd said it for many of your admirers here:

"This is SO good. If there had never been a Bob Dylan or a Bruce Springsteen, you could have filled that spot."

Amen,

Robert

Great!! This works!! Really nice story telling. I got a kick out of "closing out verse three" or whatever the exact line was. Your songs are always creative and easy to listen to. I'm a big fan!! Take care. Greg

Love your storytelling, David, and this tune is no different! Like someone else said above, you've definitely carved out a unique style for yourself. Can't wait to hear more stories from your corner smile

Hello, David

Very mellow. And it really sounds like Dylan as many others said.
The chord progressions are unique. You have a way of your own in such matters.
Very cool song. I really like it.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Best Regards.

David, the intro sounds very Beatlesque and the interesting chord progression carries on from there. The lyrics are very well crafted and you phrased them perfectly. Good production and mix. Very, very enjoyable. Tom

David
Excellent work - like a lost (or re-discovered) Dylan track.

I've been a Dylan fan since I heard his first album in high school -- yeah I'm old. And I don't use comparisons to him lightly. But man, this is freakin' amazing...from the phrasing to the lyric to the arrangement.

I feel like I just heard a lost basement tape cut.

That's all...I'd rather listen again than blather.

"hey Janice, come in here...you gotta hear this!"
