Here you go Deej Lyrics by request

When I was a little boy, I played with many toys
but I always wound up laying them aside
I'd stroll through the woods alone, kicking leaves and old pine cones
till at last my feet unveiled that treasured prize.

Was a stick about 3 foot long, fairly straight and mighty strong
a knot or two was no concern to me
I'd sight it down the bore, level the bark till my thumbs got sore
and whisk it over my head with dignity

many a brave charge I led, with that stick over my head
rallying soldiers that no one else could see
Fought the civil war, both sides, how that stick would change the tide
and like Moses I set the people free

I'm no longer a little boy and the world took back it's toys
life has it's ways of breaking people down
I need to go to the woods again, kick some leaves with my feet and then
get on my knees and search familiar ground

For a stick about 3 foot long, fairly straight and mighty strong
a knot or two is no concern to me
I'll sight it down the bore, level the bark like I did before
and whisk it over my head with dignity

Many a brave charge I led, with that stick over my head.
Rallying soldiers that no one else could see
Fought the civil war both sides, how that stick would change the tide.
and like Moses I'll set the people free

Nice nostalgic piece - the weapon of choice for a kid with few toys.
I love the low tone, licks over on the side.
Cool.

Lots of memories there for all of us of that era....particularly those of us who lived in rural areas.

Enjoyed it!

Nice work on this smile A really nice throwback to classic country, with really strong vocals and a catchy chorus. Love the harmonies, and there's some wonderful chord progressions.

Thanks for sharing!

Hi Cliff,

You and Corey have created a wonderful musical journey. I enjoyed every minute of the ride. Your vocals are very clear and I found it easy to hear every one of your words.

All the best,
Noel

Flashback to my childhood! Loved! We played the same games up here in the north! I found it interesting in that I go into the woods and take pictures for relaxation now and your song pointed to a similar situation.

I liked your vocals and especially your lyrics. To nitpick I thought that some of the background leads that were playing during your vocals were a little distracting. I would have preferred to have them in between your phrases, but that is just my opinion. YMMV

Regardless this is an excellent song as is.

Well, I will try to remix this later, but, for now, it stands as recorded. HA Mario you and I would have been good buddies, north or south. Cliff

Howdy ...

Some great classic country sounds here! I grew up on a farm about an hour northwest of St. Louis, Missouri (until I started high school ... moved to the city then). But being about forty miles from Nowhere, and Nowhere was ten miles further down the road, we had to be self-entertaining. If nothing else, it teaches you a little creativity. A few things in your lyric that take me back to specific things as I grew up.

Loved my listen! Best top both of you ...

Thank You Deryk, this one was written by me in about 92, had a good recording of it then in a pro studio, but, I think this one is better, BIAB the professional recording studio and musicians sure can do wonders with a song. Cliff

Nice!!! Country is not my alma mater, as it were (although I love it), so bravo for making me enjoy it so much! Some wonderful memories expertly depicted here.

cliftond,

Very smooth listen . . . brings me back to the 70s . . . just pleasant on the ears. I would have liked to follow along with the lyrics a bit more, as I didn’t quite catch everything, and most of what I heard seemed pretty sweet to me. As a suggestion, the ending seemed a bit too quick to the fade. . . but that, too, is just nitpicking. On the whole, this is a strong, strong piece of music, and I enjoyed my listen.

All the best,

Deej

Thank You Mario, yes I have a bad tendency to play lead all the time. Still working to correct that. We would have been good buddies when we were younger had we lived near each other. Cliff

Alan Thank You and ,Ha , yes we have similiar backgrounds for sure. I would not give anything for those times though!!! Probably why I write songs now. Cliff

A really clever and unique write!! An interesting story, well told. Particularly like:

Fought the civil war, both sides, how that stick would change the tide
and like Moses I set the people free

Love that wholesome sound you guys have. Great stuff!! Take care. Greg

Cliff & Corey,

A good one! Good vocals and harmonies. A classic sound, perfect for the song and the subject. A bit of "Lodi" to it.

The first half of the song it sounds as though the snare is all to one side (left) which I haven;t heard since the 60's...

One of your best. Enjoyed it.

The title alone drew me in. And the song didn't disappoint. I just saw the movie Christopher Robin and it was very similar in theme to this song. Nice job.

I love the wistful storytelling. Good groove and sentimental feel.
