Perhaps this could be considered a protest song...
But I doubt it smile...
Anyway I hope you enjoy your listen.

Lyrics:
Woe to Us © J Hughes

Eyes full of lust
Hands quick to steal
Hearts filled with hate
Ready to kill
Woe to us
Woe to us

Tongues full of lies
Lips of deceit
Minds filled with pride
Greed for our meat
Woe to us
Woe to us

Pillage the ground
Beneath our feet
Poison the air
So we can't breathe

Talk about love
Sing about peace
Build bigger bombs
That's our disease
Woe to us
Woe to us

That about covers it, Jim. Let's not wait for all those pesky other people to repent. A lot of Johnny Cash in this.
Posted By: Janice & Bud Re: Woe To Us © J Hughes - 06/03/19 01:37 PM
Yeah, it does have a hint of Cash...a good thing.

Unfortunately this song could be applicable to about any period of history. There are just more pesky people in need of repenting nowadays and the weapons are bigger.

But we can always dream...

Thanks for sharing.

Jim,

Love it... I agree with the comparisons to Cash. I can hear him singing this.

Excellent job!

Dark tune Tommy. I got the Cash vibe as well. Kind of like the Hurt tune he did at the end of his life.. Well done

Jim,

Definitely has a cool Johnny Cash vibe . . . love that ticking time bomb effect you’ve got going. I wouldn’t say a protest song, but certainly a compelling reminder of humanity’s darker side. Nice work!

All the best,

Deej

Ohh Jim,
So true and sad.
At first sight, seems that tune like this was effortless for you, but I am certain it was the opposite.
I guess that's the magic in writing good song, so it listens easy, yet carries a lot of weight.
Clock ticking theme was a very clever move!

P.S. People hear J.Cash presence... I hear more of Leonard Cohen.
You and I probably share same "sad song" week smile

Thank you for sharing this!

Misha.

Bravo!!! Superb job. Wish I could write like that. Maybe one day I will.

Sad, sad message, but the truth often hurts, so no complaints (as it were) about any of it. If the shoe fits ...

Loved the ticking clock effect, also.

Oh, and one last thing: don't know about Johnny Cash, Leonard Cohen or whatever ... this sounds AUTHENTIC and original, 100% ... and that's what I think matters. This is not Cash or Cohen, in my humble and profane opinion ... this really is you, that's how it comes across to me.

Hard - no point, even - to analyse this by taking it apart and talk about its "components", as it were. It's the whole thing that leaves one feeling like one's swallowed a dose of truth - which is, again, a very healthy and sobering thing to do from time to time. Great stuff - thank you.

Excellent lyric.
As said, this could apply to almost any time any any "high" civilization in history.
What marks our time as the time of this song is that we know what we do and what that does to the planet.

Jim,

An exceptional write.

So much said in so few words. The mark of a craftsman.

Excellent.

Very well done - simple in it's delivery, but very powerful at the same time - the mark of a well executed song. It displays strong songwriting skills, and really sets a dark mood perfectly.

You should be proud of this one - thanks for sharing smile

Jim,

Well put by Misha: " it listens easy, yet carries a lot of weight" I like the mood of foreboding your voice carries to match the lyrics.
A good, well crafted song.

This has that 60's protest song vibe happening and we need more songs like that today I think.

Well done, Jim, enjoyed the listen!

Enjoyed the song and like the others liked the ticking and Johnny Cash like vibe.
Nicely done.

Nice song, though very dark, Jim.
And that clock...
I remember we discussed it, because of the clock in one of my songs.
But in your lyrics we're closer to the edge...
But I like the intriguing way you brought it.

Hi Jim,

I'm a bit late getting to this one.

As I was reading through the comments, I came across Deej's and he said everything that I was thinking so I thought I'd quote him.

It's a sad thing that so much of humanity seeks to define itself by power and greed rather than tolerance and generosity. Maybe one day the good guys will stand tallest!

All the best,
Noel

As everyone's said - good song!

I really like the use of space in the song - something I struggle with. Less really can be more, in the right context.
