This is my 200th showcase song post.

I first recorded this in 2013 shortly after I first got BIAB.
I think it might have been the first time I ask Janice Merritt to sing BGVs with me.
(we've worked on about 70 songs together since - including Bud)
Then it just sat.
I recorded a different version in 2018 (a different tempo - can't remember if it was faster or slower)
Fortunately, Janice agreed to sing on the new version, too...
And then it sat some more.
I thought it would make an appropriate 200th song.
I re-mixed it a few weeks ago.

The BAND:

GO OUT OF YOUR WAY

she told me that i didn't need
to go out of my way
she knew that i had tickets
for the playoff game today
she said that she'd been missing me
and just wanted to say hi
but i could tell she needed to be held
by the way she said goodbye

i don't have to catch her
every time she falls
i don't need to come running
every time she calls
but i gave away that ticket
and showed up at her door
some things are worth going
out of your way for

you've got to go out of your way
   to keep love strong
through the ups and downs each day
a narrow path ain't always straight
sometimes down the road of love
you've got to go out of your way

like a young child needs attention
and a flower needs the rain
a heart needs reassuring
that love remains
sometimes it's the little things
that say you will be there
sometimes it's to the moon and back
just to show how much you care

you've got to go out of your way...

J&B - thanks for all of your help through the years!

And...a huge thank you to PGMusic for giving us a miracle tool.
Nothing else like it in the world (as we know it).
And, thanks for giving us a place to have our music heard!!

Comments of any kind.
Have at it.

Floyd,

I know I'm in for a treat whenever I see a new upload from you.

Wonderful! Great vocal as always, and Janice always comes through to add the perfect touch.

Nice write, my favorite among many:

"like a young child needs attention
and a flower needs the rain
a heart needs reassuring
that love remains"

Your mixes always make for a great listen through the 'phones, each individual instrument comes through cleanly, never any mud.

200 songs is an amazing achievement! Especially as they are all good songs, I don't recall ever hearing a song from you that wasn't.

In a perfect world you would be a household name I think.

Looking forward to hearing the next 200! wink

Congrats on your 200th, Floyd!! And I dig Dave's idea of a perfect world; still I'm happy to be in this one where at least WE get to hear these amazing songs of yours. I'm also glad that PGMusic keeps The Birth Of A Song pinned to the top of the Showcase. I'll never complain about cutting grass again.

Thanks for going out of your way to help us all along the way.

Man, I'm on my 3rd spin of this song, and barely typed anything yet... Guess that says it all. THANKS, Floyd.

Wow, what a great anniversary. Congratulations, and thanks for the tips you've provided over the years. My favorite lines in this song:

"sometimes it's the little things
that say you will be there
sometimes it's to the moon and back
just to show how much you care"

Banjo and mando were a treat in this one. And of course, superb singing by both of you.

I really like this Country song. Good mix, harmonies are perfect.
Posted By: dcuny Re: Go Out Of Your Way - 01/29/22 03:11 PM
The kick drum makes an immediate statement. Interesting mix - a bit "dark" with the snare tucked back a bit further than I expected.

As usual - excellent write. The conversational tone feels natural.

Catchy melody, the banjo sounds works as a good counterpoint in the chorus. The mandolin is standout as well. Clear mix.

The added percussion at the end is a nice change.

Excellent vocals, especially the harmonies. Nothing flashy, just very well done.

Congratulations on #200! laugh

Just in time for valentines day!
Nice write, catchy melody and as always fantastic vocals.

Partnering with J&B looks like a good way to go!

The addition of Janice's backing on this is like the sweet filling in well made deserts.

Nice one for sure.

Great mix - crystal clear vocals and perfect instrumentation.

Well done.

The pick up notes worked a treat.
Whilst I admit that, personally, I'd reduce the kick click, I also have to admit that NOTHING needs changing.
A positive, affirming lyric, a sweet melody, a fab band and JANICE.
Ace work FJ, ace.

Happy 200th!

This one would have fit in anywhere in your catalog very nicely.

A very smooth presentation. You have a wonderful recording technique, studio, etc. All you songs sound so polished. Great backing vocals by Janice. They are mixed in perfectly. Great lyrics, and gold star to:

"a narrow path ain't always straight"

Excellent song.

Congratulations for your 200th song posting. It's an achievement we've all on the forum benefited from. You reached the milestone with a well written and performed song and the Floyd, Bud and Janice team works like a well-oiled machine and you guys never fail to hit the mark with every new release.

I enjoyed my listen and will likely be singing along after another few spins. This is a good one.

Floyd

For number 200 your sure picked a good one!

I am definitely not a fan of banjo, but boy does it sound great in here! Those guitars and mandolin are mixed beautifully!

The vocals are great as always with your tunes and I feel Janice's background vocals are sitting in the sweet spot supporting your lead!

That chorus really sticks with the listener well after it's all ended...a sign of something pretty good!

Congratulations on number 200 and I want to say thanks for blessing all of us here with so much great work over the last few years!

Thanks, Torrey

Thanks, David. I actually reduced the kick quite a bit, using EQ. It had gotten really dominate because of the evolution of the song (a long story), and at times, re-listening, I thought it was STILL a bit too much...

Thanks, ray. I agree that the kick is a bit louder than it needs to be (put more the thump than the click).
Glad to have someone notice those pick-up notes! Thanks...
