Forum Friends I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on two digital pianos I'm looking t buy: Yamaha DGX-640 vs Casio PX-350? I've read all the reviews and plan to give them a test ride this weekend, but I value your unbaised opinions. Here's the link to my Soundclick page to see what kind of musician I am since that may influence your advice. http://www.soundclick.com/dcspacedog Thanks. SpaceDog

I have no comment on the models you are looking at, but wanted to comment on the companies. I'm very partial to Yamaha based on experience with their Clavinova line of digital pianos. It was bought essentially as a piano with a volume control, complete with full weighted action, which is probably not what you're going after. But they have fantastic support and first-rate documentation. That's not to take anything away from Casio, who are probably just as good. I'm just sayin' . . . HTH, Richard

Hi Spacedog,
You've narrowed it down to two choices, either of which can get the job done.
But -- the keyboard feel of digital pianos is personal. One person may prefer one over the other, but more important is YOUR playing style and the way you feel about this aspect.
So, if at all possible, I recommend that you try to find local music shops that have the models set up for audition playing and that you spend some time with each one before making a decision. You will likely have to live with the choice for some time and this extra step will prove well worth it.

I love playing my Kurzweil Digital Piano. It has always had a very "real-piano" solid feel when playing it, whereas the others mentioned tend to have keys that feel somewhat spongy when I play them. But that's just my opinion.

. I am a huge fan of the Yamaha DGX series. I have a 76-key model, and I think it has the right balance of range and portability.
BUT when I look at threads on various boards where people compare Casio and Yamaha the preferences seem about evenly divided. The people that like Casios are as strong in their praise as I am in mine. So I guess the thing to do is try everything and make up your own mind.
So take your time and enjoy the process.

Richard, Thanks. I too am partial to Yamaha. I've been using an old 1995 vintage PSR for midi recording and portable use when I'm separated from my piano. Looking at the DGX-640, the general controls seem similar and would be a smaller learning curve, but I've heard some great things about the Casio Mac, Thanks. I agree. I'm headed down the Guitar Center to try them out.
John, Thanks. I'll pay close attention to look for that "spongy" feel
Flatfoot, Thanks. Good advice to take my time. I tend to be a very well prepared, decisive shopper rather than a browser.
FrankB, Thanks. Good YouTubes. I wish I could play like those guys!!!

The 640 would be my recommendation. Consider carefully whether you will get a 76-key or an 88-key model. I have the 76-key and I really like the smaller size for portability.

CASIO has indeed been making some rather noticeable innovations.
The new Privia PX-5S, while not likely to be a recommendation for the purposes asked about here, is looking like it will be my next keyboard acquisition, for the sound of the thing, the Vintage Keyboards to include a very realistic Wurlitzer E piano that allows one-button amplifier simulations among other things, built in effects, ALL of the various Rhodes sounds thru the decades including the original, Clavinets that sound and play and feel like the original Clavinet (and the Sustain pedal doubles to initiate the 'wah' of the Clav via DSP, good on 'em) plus easy one button access to all of these goodies, great for live onstage use and jam sessions. And the hex synth is thrown in for good measure. 88 keys, weighted action that feels good to me, 24 lbs.
And the great sounding CASIO tonewheel organ and Leslie is in it, too.

All, Thanks for your advice. I tried the Yamaha DGX-640 and Casio PX-350 over the weekend and went with the Casio. The thing that sold me was the sound of the piano tones. I also really liked the compact and light-weight cabinet. Admittedly, the Yamaha had better accompaniment sounds and features, cost less and came packaged with a keyboard stand. It was a tough choice but they were both excellent products. I'll be posting some more new songs in a few weeks in the User Showcase. Thanks again.
