I keep entering F#m7b5 and the software changes it into Gbm7b5. How can I get it to do what I want? I nthe song of E, for example, there is an F#, although it is equivalent to Gb, it makes sense in the key of E to call it an F#. what gives?

Yes, this enharmonic changing can be confusing. I see you are pretty new to the forum, so forgive this basic question: Did you enter the key of the song into BIAB? The key is entered in between the style readout and the tempo slider. If not, it probably still says "C", the default key. Enter "E" and say "No" to transposing.

If that's not it, please write back.

It prints what I want it to print here. If I am in E I get the F#m automatically.

Go to Prefs -> Notation and make sure that "Use chord scale for enharmonics" is not checked.

You may have to restart BIAB, you may have to reboot the machine.

If no joy yet, try Opts. -> Return to Factory Settings and then revisit the above and make sure that "Use chord scale for enharmonics" is still unchecked, if not, uncheck it and test again. (I remember mine got stuck once in a previous version)

True, it makes sense to call it F#m7b5 in the key of E.

It will sound the same either way though, of course. So, if you are just using it for accompaniment, it really shouldn't make a lot of difference what BIAB calls it. You know it is the same chord.

I can see, however, if you want to print out a lead sheet, and want it to read as clearly as possible, that you would prefer it call the chords by the more common way of naming them, according to they key.

Hi,

Are you using the Chord Builder to enter the chord? I noticed a couple of weeks ago that if the Chord Builder is used, the enharmonic names seem to come into play. If, however, you type the chords directly in using the notation view (type f3m7b5, enter) the right chord appears. Seems to be a glitch in the program.

I just tried it again, now and this anomaly does not seem to have been solved in the last software update.

Best regards,
Noel

Perhaps I should never mention this but it is good for a laugh. I was learning the Baritone Horn a few years ago. Fired up the tuner in Band in a Box, and blew the fundamental. Darn thing was an A#. After muttering, sputtering, trying to bend the note, eventually the grey matter overcame the red rage that was building and I came to the revelation that A# and Bb are the same darned note.......for a half an hour I tried 2 baritones and a Euphonium and I was sure the software was damaged, not that John was having a seniors moment.......

But look at the bright side -- you own an extremely rare A# Euphonium!
