After creating Chipspeech voices based on classic vocal synthesis, Plogue has released a new free singing vocal synthesis VSTi called Alter/Ego. The 32 bit VSTi will run in BiaB, but it's not really that usable in that setting, because of the timing of consonants. It uses formant synthesis, and sounds... well, not convincingly human, but possibly useful. One nice feature is that you can type English text into it and it'll automatically convert it (using the CMU dictionary). As you play notes/chords, it automatically advances to the next syllable. For goofing around, it's pretty fun. But to get it to work properly, you've got to play the notes a bit ahead of time, so the consonants align just before the beat. Otherwise, it just sounds wrong. Vocaloid and Sinsy do that automatically. Alter/Ego has no look-ahead (it's a VSTi) because it's meant to be played live. Because it doesn't know when the note will end, it can't calculate the proper offset for the syllable.

Here's a link to the free Daisy voice for Alter/Ego singing against a BiaB backing track: Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star - DaisyThis required a lot of tweaking of the note timing, so it was put together in Reaper. Moving the notes about 1/8th of a beat make most of the consonants line up correctly. On the other hand, if the folk at Plogue decided to make a version of this that wasn't focused on real-time playback (and so accounting for the time it takes syllables to sound), I could easily imagine it as something that could be integrated into BiaB. ALYS is another virtual singer capable of singing in French and Japanese. The developer has been working on the project for the last two years, and there's a detailed blog entry of the developing her voice. The decision was to build ALYS using free technology for UTAU, which is functionally clone of Vocaloid. Casey Chapman (aka PaintedCZ) has put together a series of detailed series of YouTube presentations that covers the entire process of building a voice from scratch in UTAU using various tools up to creating a song with the recorded phonemes: Interestingly, the ALYS voice was recently ported to Alter/Ego. Alter/Ego uses formant synthesis, the need to record all those transitions goes away - the voice information is parameterized, so you can just interpolate from one phoneme to the next. ALYS is still being developed for other tools, so I'll be instructive in hearing the difference between the two voices once the other version is released. I suspect the UTAU (sampled version) will blow the formant synthesis out of the water...

Ok, I got the stuff (AlterEgo installer and the Daisy zip) but I'm already stuck on what to do with the resulting Daisy folder or its content  Can you translate this part from the Readme into something that resembles plain english, David?: "..drag the Daisy.bank.xml FROM your copied folder location only the UI."

Glad you got it figured out. I find the same instruction is there even after the Daisy voice has been loaded, but you can choose it from the dropdown list once it's installed.
I think their plan is to monetize it from other voices. For example, it looks like the ALYS voice will be running about $80US.

Btw, don't you think it's odd how none of all these voice synthesis things seem to be able to deal with the s-sound, one of the few sounds one can state with almost 100% certainty is a part of every language! :p

Hrm... I haven't noticed a problem with the /S/. It's not a vocalized sound, so it's produced differently than most phonemes. It's more like an /F/, or the plosives /K/, /P/ and /T/. With formant synthesis, it's filtered gaussian noise. Where most phonemes are run through a sequence of filters (simulating the throat and mouth), those sounds are run through parallel filters instead.
With the Daisy voice, you might try using the Daisy Bunny preset instead of Daisy Default - the articulation of the consonants is more clear.

I would't prentend to be in the know-how of all the detailed elements of what makes these tools actually work, so I can't really comment on those. I have noticed though that perhaps my sentiment comes (in part) from how different the s-sound is in my own language from most other languages, and possibly this difference is somehow further accentuated by these synthesis engines I'll try your settings tip a try regardless, thanks
