Do a Youtube search on Hallums House of Lights.....this one is unbelievable. This is a relative of mine that did an unbelievable job on computerizing outdoor Christmas lights. He won some type of world competition doing this...I don't recall the award title, but check it out.

Actually, the opposite is probably the case.
His power draw could brown out the neighborhood.
I bet the Power Grid knows and prepares for him well ahead of time, too.
Reminds me of my daze working at one of the accelerators in Illinois on a subcontract, "Call up the grid," sez the perfessor, "We need to do a run!"...

They likely just want to save on the electric light bill.
How?
Here in Germany the owner of a run-of-the-mill gas filling station engaged a consulting company to investigate the potential of energy cost savings. Emphasis is on energy cost saving - not energy saving.
The consulting company wound up with ordering a huge energy consuming fan, blowing a lot of energy into the air. The result was that the energy consume increased substantially to the effect that the owner slipped into a different consumer category -> with a lower price frame for the consumed energy. The result was a substantially smaller bill despite of more energy consumed.
Bad world.

I wouldn't rush to condemn the entire world over one energy supplier's ruleset and someone finding a loophole in it.
Loopholes like that get fixed when found anyway.
I don't think the energy provider I've got here, named, "Dominion" oddly enough, would fall for it anyway. They. get. their. money. And then some.

The system used in these is called LOR, or Light-O-Rama. Each of the controllers will draw up to 15 amps from an outlet, or 20 amps if it's hard wired to the circuit breaker. Each controller will control 8 channels, or 16 channels in two banks of 8. Each channel can utilize a maximum of 8 amps. All is computer controlled.
The new LED Christmas lights only draw 10% of the power from a standard C9 incandescent string, which means that if you used them, you could have a very large display, but the lights are very expensive.
I suspect that if you were to upgrade to a 300 amp service from a 200 amp service in your home, you could put on a display 'you can see from space!'
By the way, I liked the information that if you turned on all the lights in the Hallman display, it would draw 360 Amps! Which is 160 MORE than what most households are wired for. That's some electric bill

Matt was telling me that the biggest problem was the complaint from neighbors regarding driveby onlookers on their street in front of their house. It was always "wall-to-wall cars" down their street most of the Christmas season, so I don't know whether they will downscale or upscale this for Christmas 2009....maybe the info is there on their site....I haven't read nor talked with them about their plans for this year.

Oh man, that needs to be returned to Disneyland!!! :0 Ah well, it's all a matter of personal taste I guess. So for all of you who like this sort of thing: Here's one with some excelent (Christmas) music. Tip: if you don't like the lights: play the video anyway, but turn your screen off: the music will actually be even better! Yeah, I know, I allready posted this one last year..........but, man, that music....

Just be very sure it's no different on the other side of the world.
16-17c per coal fired Kw/hr over here in the land with more sunshine and unfullfilled, wasted opportunity for solar power than anywhere else in the world. That becomes well over $1000 a year for a very small 2 bedroom residence. I shudder to think what a large, occupied family house must cost.

I think we are at around 14c/kw here, but not certain.
Since moving into the tiny by comparison two-bedroom modern apartment, no longer the big old drafty southern mansion, the utility bills are seeming to be so low by comparison that I'm celebratin' man...

6 cents per KWH here in the Great white north.
But add to that a percentage for delivery, which is transmission lines etc. and the cost becomes around 10 cents.
2500 sq foot 4 level side split, $50 winter, goes up IF I use the Air Conditioning, which I put in for the next person who gets this former home for 5 kids which is down to the last 19 year old. The minute she's out, I'm in an RV or my cabin.

I don't even want to look at what my electric is in the Pacific Northwest. What I know is that the last couple of days have been right around freezing, it's forecast to stay that way for a while, and the condo I'm in was not built for this kind of weather. Moving in a little over a year ago, my winter electric for a 1,000sf condo was $200, using four 'wall furnaces' which are nothing more than overgrown electric heaters. I just have started looking for cold air leaks, and I'm finding them all over the place. So, out comes the caulking gun, and time to start winter proofing the house. The only problem with that is I've done some serious damage to my back, and have been laid up and out of work for a few days, and I'm in lots of pain still. In fact, the only reason I'm at work today is for the money.  Gary

Working for money. I do that, but not often.
As I told my kids, get a gov't job, with a pension. Seeing 3 grand in the bank on the first of the month, retired at 52. Now if I can just keep ticking. Hang in there.
I had lots of back problems off and on as a firefighter, falling through floors into burning basements. Found that the BEST and almost only way to get it better, unless it's broken, is exercise. Even if it hurts. If you let the muscles go, it gets worse.
Maybe make Whoopee.....I sing it in Bflat. LOL.

If you can't get rich, find yourself a girlfriend who is. If she doesn't like going out, then get a second girlfriend for that! Now, that may not be the way to true traditional 'happiness' but it sure feels like it  Of course, if the 'stay at home' girlfriend also owns a brewery (or at least sponsors a beer related business that you are involved with)...

Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums!
