So, TBTH.... I have not been doing a lot of recording here of recent. However, I will be getting back in the proverbial saddle shortly and writing a lot more.

I recently picked up a really clean Epiphone E-002 Bass Guitar from the Facebook market place last week. I had been wanting a bass to add to my wall hangers and well, this one is pretty nice and sounds good too. It needs a few tweeks and one day I will get around to getting it done. I decided to try it out on something that rocks and UTB came to mind. It's played through the Spark with a default bass Model. Still working out the kinks of recording a bass. Thoughts and advice on that aspect of recording is appreciated.

Here's what is new on the remix.... to the best of my knowledge.

I reworked the drums to avoid the ear crushing ride cymbals in the choruses.
I reworked the guitars and cleaned up a bunch of stuff in those tracks.
I muted the original bass part and recorded a new bass track.
I may have done something to the vox track.... a few word changes from the original and a bit of processing different from the first.

Not sure because this has been in the process of a remix for the past year.... is it done? I really can't say.

The original version is MP3 and the remix is on Box as a WAV.....

Under the Black (original version)

Under the Black ( remix)

Enjoy....

Herb, Sounds great! I went back and found what I said the last time. It still applies.
"Now that is nothing short of Awesome. Definitely my all time favorite from you and I have been a fan for many years. So many nice little additions, twin guitars, headstock arpeggios, Horn pipe ending. Tremendous scowling vocal. 5 minutes plus and never bored. That says it all. Time well spent". Stay well my friend, Tom

Easily my favorite tune from you, lots of great ear candy on this including some Kashmir riffs. Still sounding great, changes were subtle to my ear. Excellent song and lyrics!

Power chords and..... since this is a live bass, I could play chords on it as well instead of settling for single notes.

I'm with you on the radio airplay thing.... thanks

Glad you liked it. The imagery is practically straight from the TV series Black Sails... from the call of Sails on the horizion, to the storm, the bloody leather bag of gems, and the sword fight on the beach.... Great series that's a prequel to Treasure Island.

Sure:

The band is:

Drums: hard rock thrash half time 16 even
Bass: 1268 played live on this version
Cello: 3287
Horn pipe flute: midi from 3189
Fiddle: 3189
Guitars: 3299 & 3302

I'm playing the lead guitars. I was planning on recording the BB guitars but they just worked so I left them in. Why fix perfection?

The lyrics:

Under the black

Fifteen men on a dead mans chest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum
Seven men left only one came back
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum

INTRO

Mast on the horizon, sails upon the sea,
man of war is coming is it friend or enemy
Three days out of Nassau 90 barrels full of rum
Spanish gold and sugar from cane
There's nowhere left to run

Ships made with hemp and wood, and men with iron and bone
Under sail on a following sea, just trying to make it home
There's lightning in the distance, looks like a mighty blow
We'll be Swinging from the yardarms if they catch us with this load

Tales are told of rum and gold, shiny stones in a bloody leather sack
The ocean plays for keeps, the deck is always stacked, and the governor's noose is never slack
Trust no one, don't close your eyes , and always, always, watch your back
Blood will be spilled When you're sailing under the Black

Flint and Veines and John they say can be seen on distant shores
On a moonless night when the stars are bright, you can hear the clash of swords
Blood on the sand, blade in hand, with a dying oath he swore
X marks the spot on a pirate's map only dead men know for sure

Tales are told of rum and gold, shiny stones in a bloody leather sack
The ocean plays for keeps, the deck is always stacked, and the governor's noose is never slack
Trust no one, don't close your eyes , and always, always, watch your back
Blood will be spilled When you're sailing under the Black
Blood will be spilled when you're sailing under the Black

AC/CD playing the Kashmir riff.
Nice.
Bass recording if it's through a modeller - usually pretty easy - turn off all time basses FX make the compressor a little harder clamped and in the box look at what's happening at 70 & 120 Hz as those are the spots where it may boom or fight the drums. Oh, & don't be afraid to high pass or carve to let the kick thump.
The vocal is cool but gets a little strident in spots which seems to esss or trigger the reverb - though that's not a bad pirate thing.
FUN.

Cheers

Really cool. Herb. Listened to the original first (hadn't heard it before), but I really like the difference in the remix. Not just the Epiphone, but, yes, the crash was somewhat harsh in the original. Still it fit with the whole song, although I like the remix much better. This is such a good song, it's hard to be critical. I really got into it and forgot to listen like an engineer. Guess I'm just a fan.

Speaking of fans, I like that Epiphone you got. I can't give you much help on recording bass. I just plug in to the Focusrite, which goes into the input and play. When I mix it I'll add the Waves CLA Bass and Bass Rider (thanks to the advice of Bud Merritt). I think you're way above my pay grade regarding recording, but if you ever think of anything I can help with, send me a message.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Mix sounds good.
Good job on the drums.
I thought the Bass was somewhat "indistinct". Since you were more or less showcasing it (and the amp), I was expecting a bit more "punch" from it. But that did not distract from (or affect) the overall sound.

Yep, through a modeler. Thanks.... it's something I'll look at on my next excursion into bass guitar excellence.

Glad you remembered it.

I have often thought that I should have been a bass guitarist many times through the years as it resonates in a deep part of my musical soul.

Thanks

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
