Ways Of Forgetting floyd and I wrote (joint lyrics/his melody) this in 2016 back when he was schooling us on songwriting (he posted his version in 2020). Recently we were preparing the tune for distribution and made a lot of changes … added a harmony track by Janice, all new track FX and a new mastering chain. If you choose to listen we hope you enjoy it and comments are always welcome. Thanks to floyd and PG music. © 2016-2025 All Rights Reserved Bud Merritt & floyd jane

Hi Janice, Bud and Floyd!
This is a very enjoyable song. A very good choice of backing band with enough movement in the parts without distracting from Janice’s wonderful vocal and harmonies. Janice’s glissando (if that’s what it’s called) works well with the sentiment of the song - sliding into various notes and syllables. The fiddle added a good touch of melancholy.
Musically, the song is made IMHO by the melody and chord progression on the line ‘a sad story or drink won't erase our last goodbye’ to create distinctiveness and a pull to the last line and title in the chorus.
I love the line ‘old ways of forgetting don’t work’ - it has a certain contradiction to it, like - ‘trying to remember how to forget’.
A really good song and performed and arranged really well.

Janice, Bud & Floyd,
I remember when this song was first posted. So beautiful and one of my all time favorite vocals from Janice. I love the new FX and mastering. It sounds like it was recorded today. The new harmony track sounds awesome.
Thanks for bringing back a refreshed version of this amazing song.

This is a gorgeous song in every respect. Standard excellent Floyd lyrics, standard wonderful Janice vocals, perfect instrumentation and arrangement for the song and just lovely to listen to. <3

Janice, Bud & Floyd
This project has been meticulously crafted and produced entirely without the assistance of AI. 👋 👍
The lyrics, written by Floyd and Bud Merritt, tell a story of a woman who has decided to leave her partner because he has not been treating her well.
The lyrics are deeply reflective and no longer just nostalgically regret the past, but acknowledge that what the singer used to do to cope with the past is not working anymore. Lines like "a half finished book next to a fifth of gin" and the refrain "old ways of forgetting don’t work no matter how I try" provide specific imagery that is easy to remember.
Additionally, the lyrics, arrangement, and melody of the song have a structure that builds up to the resolution of moving to turn my life around, which (I suspect) is likely due to Floyd’s contribution.
Janice carries the weight of the lyrics on her shoulders, conveying the tiredness and resolve of the woman without letting the subject matter overwhelm her. Mixing and mastering by Bud Merritt are well executed.
The final mix places the vocals in the forefront, while the mastering adds a polished finish that makes the track a pleasureable listen "Ways Of Forgetting" is a sincere, well-produced track from The Mysterines Janice, Floyd and Bud. 💯 ♪♩ 𝓟𝓻𝓸 ♬

The Dynamic Duo pairs with the Fabulous Uno. And thus ... the Terrific Trio.
To parse out all the goodness in this one would take the rest of my night. Everything works exactly as it should. What can you say about Janice's voice? Those complementary words haven't yet made their appearance in any dictionary I know of.
One thing that really made me smile even bigger - the soft yet clear tone of the fiddle. Fiddle RTs can be a challenge to find a tone that isn't mushy or shrill, but yet is clear and explicit. Nicely done!
Y'all know what you're doing when it comes to music. And I would suppose, a few other things in life.

Andrew Thank you for your very thoughtful and positive review. Your time to write that is much appreciated. Regarding Janice’s vocal style we played and recorded in several bluegrass bands for years during which time we also played a lot of C&W. We and others called her and many others vocals “bent note” singing. 😀 And as we drifted into blues it also is common in that genre. I think the technical term is melismatic. It’s just what she does on her typically one take vocals. While floyd and Bud wrote the lyric the progression and melody was all floyd’s. Thanks for mentioning the contradictory nature of that line. Cool. Thanks for all! J&B

Gee, "guys", this is amazin'!!! Aside from the obvious deliciousness of a magical write in the hands of a gifted interpreter and a master producer, you've really done a great job crafting an all-BiaB (I think?) backing track. The opening piano with fingerstyle guitar grabbed me right away, and the rest of the song never let go.
Ya'll are each a superlative talent, and together you're...well, did I say amazin'? Worth repeating. AMAZIN' song!

I started here in 2019 so this is new to me. A very good song with very good lyrics, needless to say. Starts out like a Jackson Browne tune from Saturate Before Using, but quickly becomes its very own goodness. Of course, Janice's singing delivers the message poignantly. And it all sounds great through my Sennheiser 600HD headphones. Great work, team!

I was looking through the FX chain thinking that Bud is pretty minimal when it came to FX, until I came to the Master Buss FX. Ha! Thanks for bringing this back! And thanks to you for the nice comments. Glad you liked the harmony - it was a quick little add for an accent here and there. I use that Ozone chain often - it sort of an Ozone default but each of the modules has an excruciating number of variables to tweak. Sometimes we use a multi-compressor rather than the dynamic eq but more and more I prefer the latter. Much appreciated! J&B

This is beautiful. I can hear both Floyd's and your musical touch in there, for sure! The lyrics are wry and wistful ... i.e. wonderful So much talent ... wow. Janice sings at her best, once more (when doesn't she? ). She sounds so clear and crisp, which complements her slightly mellismatic style of singing. And the texture of the mix sounds so transparent ... what I am to say? You've done it again ... a wonderful, wonderful song and production ... well done.

Hi Janice, Bud, and Floyd, I don't know the earlier versions (yet), but this song is really excellent. The vocals take it to a whole new level. Great work, Janice. IZZY writes in his comment that the song doesn't use AI. I'd say that AI would fare pretty poorly compared to Janice's vocals and Floyd's songwriting... Great work, guys! Andi :-)

Let's clear this up.... When it comes to songwriting, credit should be given where credit is due. Many of the comments on the lyrics seem to imply that I might be somehow more responsible than Bud. Not true. By a long shot. As I recall, (and that is not necessarily a reliable thing these days) Bud sent me a fairly complete lyric. Well thought out. A lot of good lines, phrases, ideas. IF anything was "lacking" it was a little spit-n-shine. Final polish. (well...and a melody) I've had a lot of experience co-writing. With writers of all level. From Pro hit-writers to people who had no clue whatsoever. (An awful lot of people who end up in Nashville are really bad writers. Most go home right away.) I've done co-writes where I'm simply smoothing things - and co-writes where I have been given little more than a title or an idea and I write the whole thing. A good idea or title is worth a lot. At the time of this co-write, I think Bud might have written 10 songs (probably an exaggeration, but perhaps not) But he was FAR from clueless. I don't remember how this went exactly, but what I did was "take out the bumps". Just make sure that it "falls on the ear" the way it should and says what is intended without unnecessary extras. Little things. Much of that comes with experience. Good songwriters learn quickly. Bud understood all the changes. He picked those things up quickly and incorporated them into his writing. To improve as a songwriter only 2 things have to happen. You have to know that you are not quite there and you have to pay attention and figure out why (or have someone help with that). Recognize your faults and fix 'em. After about 3 songs like that, Bud no longer needed any help whatsoever. One or 2 "bigger points" and a bunch of "small detail stuff" and he was off-and-running... And I benefit from someone else's way of thinking. Bud writes phrases that would not occur to me. Bud deserves most of the credit here. (If I recall correctly... ) fj I feel bad that some folks will not read this (if they do not re-visit threads). I would have put this up right away, but we have been traveling (again. my wife just won't stay home. and I can't convince her to go alone)

Janice, Bud and Floyd.
This is absolutely brilliant. The first thing that grabbed me was the production.
Bud, your revised mastering chain is incredible. The overall sound is rich and has a 3-D depth and spread to it that really made me feel like I was sitting in the middle of the performance. I listened through headphones as well as through speakers and the production is magical in both situations.
Janice, your singing never stops amazing me. This particular backing really showcases your outstanding ability. The warmth and depth of your voice, and the sincerity of your performance, all shine brightly in this presentation.
Floyd, your arrangement is superb. And those lyrics that you and Bud have written are first class. I love the story and I love the way it develops. The chorus resonates with melancholy and tugs at the heartstrings.
I thoroughly enjoyed this journey. --Noel

Good overall job on this remix. Glad you liked it and the piano. This song won me over on MST’s years ago. Logic Pro has many piano sounds but their Grand Steinway is what we use most of the time. That sound and our user created piano preset for Waves Unplugged seem to get the job done. J&B

Thanks for the supportive review! Yes it is all BiaB but I did some cut/paste work on the MST piano track. We've done 80+ collabs with floyd although most were swapping vocal tracks. Of the actual co-writes we've done this is one of our favorites so we are very happy it worked for you. J&B

Hey, any mention of Jackson Browne is good. We are fans. Glad you like it and also that it sounded good on the cans. Much appreciated, J&B

This song overflows with talent. Floyd has crafted a wistful melody which Janice sings like only she can - skillfully, convincingly and with all her heart. "old ways of forgetting don't work/no matter how i try" are lines that go far beyond usual heartbreak songs. And Bud has mixed all so that everything is crystal clear and punchy. The arrangement is pretty simple, but is shows how important each instrument is, the fiddle feels especially tailored for this song, which naturally shows the versatility of BIAB.

You've done it again ... a wonderful, wonderful song and production ... well done. Reading a review like this makes it all worthwhile. Thank you … very much. J&B

Andi :-) Thank you Andi for the very positive and supportive review! J&B

Excellent collaboration...full of beauty and wistfulness. Janice sounds like a "female Bob Dylan" here and there with her treatment on the lyrics. Thank you for noting the wistfulness as that was an outcome we hoped for. Now on to Dylan for whom we are long time fans. We’ve received many reviews from the cassette days to the present and we have to say this is the first time Janice’s vocals have been compared to him. 😀 J&B

Hello friends. After taking a short vacation, I see that you haven't lost your talent, and that Janice's voice is still as pleasant to listen to as ever. As for Floyd, he knows how much I love his songs and his voice. Laurent

Perfect vocals, and those harmonies take them to a whole new level. Fantastic work by everyone involved ![[Linked Image - Only viewable when logged in]](https://www.pgmusic.com/forums/images/icons/default/thumbs_up.gif) I think one day I'll have to listen to my old stuff too, to see what I can do with it with what I've learned since then. Glad you like it! Redos of older productions can be productive and sometimes very informative to see how much our protocols have changed. J&B

--Noel It's always great to hear from you Noel and your comments are much appreciated. Thanks for the positive and supportive remarks on the vocals, the write and the production. You know we admire your productions and that makes this even more special! J&B

Really nice song and vocal. VERY impressive Mix. I'm getting back in to doing music after a pretty long hiatus. Got any quick suggestions for tackling Ozone? We appreciate your nice comments. My suggestions regarding Ozone? Hmmm. I’ve used it for 11 years and it’s changed a lot over the years. I’d suggest allowing it to analyze your tune and offer up a module chain. Each of the modules can be deleted or tweaked. And that’s where your ears take over. We have tweaks that we created and saved as module presets. Above all the limiter (final module) is most important, of course, as it establishes your dynamics and final volume levels. Ozone with its gain matching and bypass allows you to instantly check on how changes sound compared to the original. Izotope has always had some good videos and along with YouTube you can do a deep dive. Best to on the journey. Thanks again, J&B

Floyd, Janice & Bud. A winning collaboration for over a decade.
I have always been impressed by your talents and skills; songwriters, singers, producers, BIAB aficionados.... You do it all very well.
2016 ! Wild.

p.s. Couldn't help but notice the 'AI' disclaimer. Man, how the times have changed.

I would have put this up right away, but we have been traveling (again. my wife just won't stay home. and I can't convince her to go alone) Thank you floyd. Every one of our 90 collabs with you have been both a pleasure and a learning experience. From me learning about “bricks and mortar” in writing lyrics (plus much more) to Janice learning how to use harmony as accents and builds it has all been and remains memorable. J&B
