You

Yesterday (Saturday, 10-04-25) Di would have been 79 years old. I was going to post this yesterday - on her birthday - but it was a really tough day, and I didn't get it done. You know, that first year of all the special days when you've lost a spouse is a challenge, emotionally.

We wrote and recorded this in late 2011 using a different music generation program. I ripped her voice from that recording and moved it over to these tracks with BIAB RTs and RDs that I generated for this version.

I hope you don't mind me reposting one I posted just 5 years ago, but I thought it would be appropriate to do so anyway. Besides, many of the newer forum members have never heard her sing.

I made a few slight changes since the previous post, but nothing significant. I softened the flute a small amount and gave the drum kit a very slight increase in the upper mids. That brought out the brushes and cymbals a bit more.

Di on vocals, and we collabbed on the lyric. I wrote all the music.

I sure do miss hearing that sweet voice singing around the house almost every day.

Hope you enjoy,

Alan

PS: Di was just a couple of weeks from her 65th birthday when she recorded this.

You

You, light up my stars at night
You, make everything so right
I don’t know what I’d do
If you ever went away

(v2)
You, lift my spirits high
You can always make me sigh
I pray to God each night
That you’ll always want to stay

CHORUS
If you ever said goodbye
I don’t know what I’d do
There would be nothing left
Of me without you

Instrumental Verse

(v3)
You, are the life of me
You set my spirit free
Without you I’d never be
The woman I’ve become

You, you’ll never know how much
You can thrill me with your touch
It’s like magic when we kiss
When our hearts melt into one

Wow, Alan, this is SUPER! Love Di's liquid vocal take on these lyrics, and it's a fabulous write as well, old school and polished. Very cool bossa backing track, and the solo section is a perfect fit. Heck, EVERYTHING fits together perfectly. Nice technical job ripping Di's vocals from another backing track, too.

Alan, hope you have or can get a support system for working through the grieving process. No need to go through this alone.

Happy birthday, Di! Thinking of you...

Hi Ron,

Thanks for all those very nice words about our music. She was quite the singer - but an even better person and wife.

I have a pretty good support backup. Our daughter and granddaughter each live only 5 or 6 houses from ours. Of course, they're grieving, too. But we lean on each other when necessary. We're rock solid. Also, Di's hospice provider has a support program, and they've been great. The hardest part is just is trying to reinvent myself. But it's getting there.

Thanks for the kind words - on each facet.

Alan

Alan,

Di had such an incredible voice and ability to phrase. This is one of the best things I've ever heard on the forum. Spectacular job on building the new tracks to produce and present this awesome piece of music.

Thanks so much, Bob. And yes, her phrasing and vocal intonation were amazing. Building the BIAB tracks wasn't all that hard - a little over an hour. Massaging the ripped vocal to get the clarity without losing the richness of her voice was the challenging part. I worked on that for several hours. I guess you could say I've had quite a journey with EQ-ing vocals. But it seems to work. But I had a pretty danged good base to work with!

Take care,

Alan

Thanks for posting this Alan. Di’s voice and the new backing flowed so well together - I wouldn’t have known if you hadn’t mentioned. Di had a very wide vocal range from highs to lows.

Without imposing on you, I hope you are able to post more like these in the future - honouring Di but also you both together.

Loved this.

Loved it...Di's voice has such character! And for a project that involved ripping and re-stitching, this is solid and a real listening pleasure. The recent mix and use of RT's seems to be a perfect compliment to this lovely vocal and well-written song. Congrats! Totally enjoyed it!

Wow, that vibrato! Amazing! A pleasure to listen to. Glad you shared that you have pretty good support around you, Alan. Family a few doors away is terrific. EQing vocals precisely might be pretty good therapy as well. Thanks for taking the time to get this sounding so good!

Alan,

This is, indeed, one of the most beautiful songs I have heard on here, and so much of it is due to Di's incredible, incredible voice. Thank you so much for bringing it to us, once more. 100% (and more) worth all the work you've had to do on the tracks. I will remember this song ... again, thank you.

Genuine best wishes,

JD

Hi Andrew,

Thank you for the very nice words. Yes, Di had a 3-octave vocal range. And she did it so effortlessly. To watch her sing, you'd think she was almost doing it as she would when walking around the house singing. Almost effortless. And anything Di and I sang was always a straight-through effort - no cut and paste. Sher sang this one only once before recording it. She just had that ability/talent.

I have 3 or 4 more she sang that I can post here. I have more, but they were created using a different music generation program. But, I'm going to rip her vocals off those songs over the next few months and create BIAB tracks to back them up. I'll post one or two a month until I've exhausted all our originals on which she sang.

All total I have over 500 videos of her singing and well over 2,000 audio-only tracks. Most of them are cover songs, which we can't post here.

Thanks again, Andrew ...

Alan

Hi Tom,

All of that is kind of you to say. Her vocal phrasing and intonation were special. And she didn't even realize she had that quality in her vocals. She would just say "I don't think about all that - I don't even know what it means. It's just the way it comes out when I sing." Must be nice!

It was a nice little project that I enjoyed working on. It took me the better part of a day to get it all finished. And I think it came out pretty nicely.

Thanks again, Tom ...

Hi Bob,

Yeah - that vibrato! It was natural for her. She never knew she could sing until about 3 years before I met her in 2010. Fortunately, I have several thousand audio recordings of her singing and over 500 videos. Her voice will never be silent as long as I'm alive.

She was truly a treasure - both vocally and personally.

Thank you for listening and commenting so nicely.

James,

Your kind and thoughtful words put a smile on my face. I appreciate them so much. It wasn't all that much work, actually. About 8 or 9 hours total. I managed to get it all done in one day.

I'm repeating what I've told others already, but I have over 500 videos of her singing and 2,000+ audio-only recordings. Her voice will live on as long as I do. Her voice still amazes me. Fpr many years, I had the pleasure of listening to her singing around the house. And she could sing almost any song in any key as she had a full three-octave range. Of course she had keys that were most comfortable for her, but if needed, she usually sing a song in any key needed. Heck, my range is barely over one octave - and I struggle with that!

Again, many thanks. Wishing you everything good.

Alan

I'm still the new kid on the block here, so this is the first time I've heard this song.
And I like what I hear.
A fantastic voice, and I would never have guessed that this is a completely new backing track matched to a ripped vocal stem.

Speaking for all of us, Alan, we love you and we're with you, man. Seriously, if you ever need anything, you got my number.

Man, it doesn't get any better than this. Happy birthday Di. I always love your voice. So soothing and what a good range, and so emotional. I particularly like the controlled vibrato. Man, I really like how this starts out, Alan, and then how you ease it into a terrific song of changes and excitement. The flute is a perfect choice --pretty much the only acceptable sound while we wait for that special vocal.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Hi, Alan.

It's really nice to hear Di again!

It would be good to have the vocal a bit more up front, but I understand the issues of trying to deal with a ripped vocal.

I'll enjoy listening to anything of Di's that you post.

Allan, Di sure had a fantastic voice.
This must have been extremely hard to produce, especially with the lyrics. I know that I couldn't do it. I am impressed on how you pulled the vocal out of an old recording, added those RTs, then had everything sound so darn good.
Loved it.

PS - Stay strong and take care of yourself. You are in my prayers.

Alan,

Hearing this song, especially with the heartfelt context you shared, is truly a profound experience. Thank you for the immense generosity—and the bravery—it took to post this precious tribute, particularly after such a difficult day.

This song is more than a composition; it is a lasting vessel of you and Di's shared life and love.
It possesses a magnificent, timeless quality that perfectly encapsulates the gentle intimacy expressed in the lyrics you both created.

By preserving her voice—by "ripping it" and carefully placing it onto these newly arranged tracks—you have done something truly miraculous.
You have not merely archived a memory; you have created a permanent, living presence.

You mentioned missing that sweet voice singing around the house, and while nothing can ever replace the spontaneity of those moments, this song offers something extraordinary: the ability to hear her, clear and vibrant, exactly as she was on the cusp of her 65th birthday, singing the sentiments of a heart completely dedicated to you.

As I listen I hear Di's spirit in her glorious voice supported by the beauty of the arrangement. Her vocal performance is infused with such warmth and certainty, embodying the powerful promise in the lyrics:

"Without you I’d never be / The woman I’ve become."

Alan, you didn’t just write the music; you wrote the scaffolding that holds her voice forever in the air.
This song is the sound of two souls intertwining, exquistely memorialized in Bossa Nova rhythm.

Thank you for allowing me a window into this treasured legacy.
May the clarity and sweetness of her voice in this recording continue to be a source of comfort for you, today and for all the years to come.

With deepest admiration,

Izzy

What a beautiful song! Di's voice is also beautiful - I don't think I've heard it before. All around it's a great arrangement with excellent instrumentation.

Many thanks. Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, my wife had a gorgeous voice. Unfortunately, she could not send any of that my way. But I have almost 3,000 copies of her singing, including several hundred videos of her singing. Fortunately, I'll never forget the sound of her voice.

See ya next time,

Hi, My Friend,

Many sincere thanks for all those kind and wonderful comments. The flute was a natural fit. This arrangement was done before multirif - and the flute came out nearly perfect on the 2nd regeneration. Her vibrato was natural. When I told her about how fantastic it was, she had no idea what I was talking about. The BIAB tracks happened pretty easily. I got lucky that I didn't have to sample very many possibilities for them. The tracks came together in about an hour.

Sure do miss hearing that beautiful voice live every day.

Wishing you the very best,

Alan

Hi David,

Perhaps our listening devices are a bit different. Her vocal is very upfront when I listen on my expensive AT headphones. Or, maybe it's just a difference in our preferences. Regardless, I'm delighted you enjoyed it. I plan on re-posting a song of hers once a month, or so, until the end of the year. After the holidays, I'll have much more time to work on stripping more vocals and find some good RTs for them.

Again, thanks so much. I always appreciate your input and comments.

PS - Stay strong and take care of yourself. You are in my prayers.

Mario,

Actually, it wasn't all that difficult. I spent a little over an hour massaging the vocal, and about the same amount of time to find the RTs. Every time we get an annual update, I spend several hours for several days listening to the new tracks and note the ones I think I'll use most often for the various genres. So, most of the time, finding racks that work for my projects isn't very much trouble. Of course, there's always the exception! But this one came together fairly quickly - between 2 and three hours.

I appreciate the personal comments. I'm doing quite a bit better. The first 2 months were really tough. But, as I said, I'm seeing some light at the end of the tunnel. Our daughter and granddaughter are both just a few houses away. Of course, they're grieving, too. But we find solace in talking amongst ourselves. Thank you for the thoughts and prayers.

Alan

We well remember this beautiful love song and your new production is great.
Di’s vocals always cut straight to our hearts and we’re so glad you have lots of her recordings and videos.
The two of you together made such beautiful music.

The new band and mix are excellent.
And that flute was a great choice.

We hope that sharing her joyous voice with others will help bring you peace and comfort.

Lovely,

J&B

No doubt, she was a remarkable person and singer, so nice to hear her lovely singing again. This song is exceptionally beautiful. I admire how you can work on these old songs, it must be emotionally hard. The arrangement, the mix and Di's vocal are in perfect balance, that flute sounds great. Glad to hear that you are bringing more of her pearls to us, to keep her alive in our hearts.

First rate job putting the vocal in with the Real Tracks. Di sounds great. I was just thinking the other day how our recorded performances keep us alive even after we're gone.

Izzy

Hi, Izzy,

Well, I'm not sure how to reply to such a wonderful review. First, thank you so much for the in-depth look at the entirety of the project. That put a big smile on my face. It was, indeed, an emotional circus to redo this one, given the circumstances. She certainly had a remarkable voice. What always left me in awe was the ease with which she maneuvered all the vocal nuances to get the sound she did - both tonally and technically. I think her impeccable phrasing is the cherry on this ice cream sundae. And all of her vocals had that special touch. Her explanation was, "I just sing what I feel, and that's how it comes out. And every recording I have of her, it was a practice sing, and then turn on the mic and get out of her way. There's never a cut-and-paste on any vocal we've recorded. It's once through and move on to the next step. She just had the gift.

And she could sing in almost genre and sound authentic. She was amazing. Fortunately, my music compositions were almost always a good match for her voice.

Thank you so much.

Wishing you the very best.

Alan

Thank you very much, Floyd. It's too bad i can't post but a very few of all those recordings. Most of them are cover songs. And, yes. I'll have them for as long as my forever is. I'm closing in on 80 years old. But my mother lived to be 90 and her mother, my grandmother, made it to 99. So, I might be around long enough to irritate a lot of people for a while!

Thanks for the thoughts - much appreciated.

Hey, Folks.

Tis always a pleasure to see your name(s) for a review/comment on one of our songs. She was so special in so many ways. I treasure those recordings of her. And sharing her special talent is, indeed, comforting.

The flute really topped this one. It was recorded prior to multirif, and it was just the second regeneration of the entire track.

Many thanks.

Alan

Janne,

It was so nice of you to say all those nice things. Appreciate very much, and I know she would, too. It was a fun song to put together. I was playing the basic mix when she walked into our little recording area and said, "Oh, I really like that. Do you have any words for it, yet?" I told her I did not. She said, "Well, I've got some ideas." So, we put our thoughts together and came up with the lyric in a couple of hours. It turned out pretty good! Of course, she could sing the label of the nutritional info on the back of a frozen dinner and make it sound like Top Ten material.

Thanks so much.

Alan

Hi, Scott,

So glad you liked it. It's one of our favorites. And there's a lot of truth in what you said about the recordings keep a part of us alive after we're gone. Sure do miss her, though. She was a true keeper.

Hi Alan.

It's wonderful to hear Di sing again. I'm so glad that you posted this. She performs this song to perfection. And I love the chord changes that you have used. The B-section (chorus) sounds like it goes through a couple of transitional modulations to my ears. For me, that is the icing on this really finely crafted musical cake.

It's a beautiful song.

I hope that her birthday brought many treasured memories to off-set your feeling of sadness and loss.

Thinking of you and Di,
--Noel
