Little Fingers
Musically, I got the idea for this song from one of Andrew Dee's posts where he mentioned a song challenge using the following chord progression: Em Am C B. Since I have no discipline, I was unable to stick to just those chords as you can see from the chord chart posted below. There are no pop melodies in this song, so sit back and enter the darkness..

Little fingers caught in the pie
Little fingers point to the sky
Little fingers turn back the hands
It’s the sleight that they don’t understand

Violated your brother’s wife
Blasphemed the father and the son
Was resurrected in the barrel of a gun
Little fingers
Little fingers

Little fingers tore away my coat
Little fingers wrapped around my throat
Little fingers cross when they sign
With borrowed blood on the dotted line

Blasphemed the father and the son
Was resurrected in the barrel of a gun

Lock all the doors and let no one else in

Scott, uber cool HUGE sound. LOVE your bold vocals, and those high harmonies are extra sweet. Nice work with the lead guitar fills, too. SUPER mix and everything just sounds HUGE (again) and glorious. Dark lyrics, but dark is cool.

"Little fingers" are referenced in a line from Elvis Costello's "Watching the Detectives". That one's dark, too.

So you're in great company!

Hi Scott! As long as you use the chord progression *within* the song - no worries. You can add other progressions. I think 7ths are okay as well. For your troubles, you have become an honorary member of the songwriting jam that Knee Wobbler and I attend, with a third. Every 5 or 6 weeks in Adelaide, Australia if you happen to be nearby. smile
It is dark isn't it. But of course, so are the words. Little fingers ... I wonder if that song is about someone I've heard of? I have a theory that fits the lyrics, but unsure if the name should be uttered in the forum.
Well done!

Really enjoyed this, Scott..everything about it..esp how "complete" a production it is. I really liked the "Little Fingers" melody motif and how you used it repeatedly. Excellent work!

Thanks, Ron. I had forgotten about that line in WTD. What actually was running through my head was "Tiny fingers you almost feel" from Costello's "Tiny Steps."

Scott,

What a cool song! Strong vocal and interesting lyric. Although I didn't listen to them much, I'll go with a Pink Floyd analogy. Strong in every way.

Well done!!!

A BIG sound, big vocal and BIG narrative.
A very universal narrative until the cuisine section too...mind you the food doesn't dent the global nature of the story.

Hi there Scott

This has a really intense almost sinister sound to it…I like it. It also has some interesting counterpoints where it goes from high intensity and changes to an “at ease” melody as at the solo at 1.24. And the lyrics man, talking about violating your brother’s wife, wow, that’s pretty heavy songwriting stuff. Your vocal was also reminiscent of Bowie, I could hear him sing this, if only it were possible.

Great song, kind regards.

Wow, great job accepting the challenge and making it your own, Scott. This is outstanding. You know I always like your vocals and this dark one is really quite special. SUre glad you have no discipline. What you may "lack" in that you make up for in creative goodness. The lyrics are as heavy as the melody. Some really fine twists in the music, which is mixed so pleasantly.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Brilliant song. I love the arrangement and production and the use of both rhythm and lead guitars. This song really has a great rhythm section.

Thanks for clueing us in on the inspiration for the song. I thought I was a big Elvis Costello fan, but I didn't know this tune and had to go listen to it on youtube. I really liked your vocals and lyrics, as I always do. You def have your own thing going on, that's for sure. Wish I could say that. Good track, listening again now.

Marty, thanks so much. Maybe I would accomplish more if I had a bit more discipline. And maybe I'd be a better guitar player too.

Hi, Scott.

Solid production, nice write, good singing! I like it!

I hear the Costello influence, but it's also very much you and appropriately dark.

I'd heard the vinyl version of Armed Forces, so I hadn't heard Tiny Steps before. Thanks for pointing that out.

Excellent rock song. Mysterious but definitely scary lyrics. The instruments support the mood perfectly, I especially enjoyed the blues guitar, the organ and those dark guitars in the chorus - they really brought the outstanding chord progression alive. Very dynamic mix. And your vocals are among the best rock voices on this forum.

Hard to top what floyd wrote. We agree in toto.
We also get the Elvis Costello vibe.

The subtle dark lyric is so well crafted.

We love the mix with it’s excellent dynamics in vocals and instrumentation.

Great rocker production … all around.

Kudos!

Scott,

This song is fantastic, bursting with rock spirit.
Your vocals are also amazing.
The key change from Em to Gm is brilliant.
The lyrics are a little difficult for me to understand, but they fit the song perfectly.
I was a little concerned about the Fdim chord at the ending, but I think it's acceptable considering it's a rock song.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Best regards.

Hey Scott,

Great piece of rock here man. The production and mixing is stellar. It made me smile. A LOT.

You sure do know how to rock my brother.

New special note to my friends: I listen to forum songs for pure enjoyment as part of my daily “radio,” in large chunks, while I am out and about. Then I post all my thoughts from mental notes when I am at my computer. There is no correlation between the time I post and the time I listen. Also, I have zero interest in critiquing, and tend to abhor “you’re the best comparisons” except in jest as an inside joke. Like: “the greatest singer and the greatest song on the forum, “ “no one knows more about BIAB than you,” “the best songwriter, vocalist, and mixer to walk the earth since Elvis Presley and no one else can scarcely compete,” etc. I like everyone here and this is just enjoyment for me. Don’t have time for anything else. Thanks.

Hi Scott,

I heard your song for the first time about a week ago and found it very impressive and dark.
Heavy guitars complement your strong voice, as do that menacing organ and the heavy drums. Very well done!
I couldn't help but wonder, how did you come up with those lyrics, about the "little fingers"? Impressive.

I didn't respond then, but I've listened to it twice now. The feeling I described above only grew stronger.
As did that question about the lyrics... ;-)

Wow what a dark lyric. very cool. Loved this tune Scott. Energy boost in the chorus was very cool. Super production

I couldn't help but wonder, how did you come up with those lyrics, about the "little fingers"? Impressive.

I didn't respond then, but I've listened to it twice now. The feeling I described above only grew stronger.
As did that question about the lyrics... ;-)

Hans, thanks for listening (more than once). I sent you a private message.

Hi Scott.

What a huge, huge effort! I'm well out of my depth in relation to this genre. That said, I can totally appreciate the work and talent needed to create such an amazing song, sound and production. Everything about this is strong and engaging. You've done a legendary job!
