Sitting On A Rock on Soundcloud
Sitting On A Rock on YouTube

A song about listening to rhythm and harmony in the wild.
The tremolo of the electric piano is for mystery, and the organ is for piety. The Eb6 is for the ever-present whiskey-tango-foxtrot influence –and to comply with the melody.

Style is _CMPFMH3.STY (Campfire, Hank 2 Guitars & Bass)

Sitting On A Rock

Sitting on a rock that lays deep within the woods
I find myself hearing what's not said.
Thoughts arise as trees surround me.
Wind blows prayers of peace.
So soon the calmness found me, and all the chaos ceased.

Sitting on a rock while forest creatures talk.
I'm taking inner stock sitting on a rock.

Silent voices speak and the forest sings along.
I find myself swaying with the breeze.
The rhythmic language spoken by the ancients of our times
has touch a part of me awakened by the chimes.

Sitting on a rock that can sooth the savage soul.
I tip my cap in gratitude to all.
The helpful feelings coming through the forest and the stone
smooth away mistakes so I can now atone.

Marty,

Dark and brooding. Bluesy and thoughtful...

You are making some really terrific music. I love the song, your vocal and Dave's awesome guitar.

A new favorite for me!

Again, even tho I like your song, your vocal sounds bothers me. Flangerish and buried. I would like to hear your own voice. Otherwise well produced and good guitar solos.

Marty, neat song and a stellar production that casts an ethereal, dark shadow. The Band (in a Box) sounds great, especially that strummed acoustic, but you and Dave are (rightfully) the stars. Really nice arrangement (cool stop!) and the mix is just right. I'd back off on the vocal FX/edits just a hair myself to let your very appealing natural dynamics shine a bit more, but that's my personal preference. Nice one!

Incredible lyrics here, Marty. I 100% relate. I love the production and the effect on the vocals, plus of course Dave's guitar. This is my favourite of your to date.
There's no 'music' like that of Great Nature's nature-al sounds, and I'm often baffled as to why joggers I sometimes see on the beach wear headphones to listen to something else! laugh
I've copied the YT link and the lyrics so that I can post them for friends on other sites who I know will love the music and lyrics.

I actually love the effects on your vocal, I think they really match the mood of the music. There is a time and a place for dry vocals, or vocals with minimal FX, but man, this ain't one of them wink

I think the song is absolutely brilliant in every way, the production is fabulous, and I'm very happy to be a part of it.

That is soooooooo good Marty,

Everything from the Vox, Dave’s lead guitar, rhythm guitar, the rasp, the finger clicking, lyrics is, excellent. The lyrics really painted so much imagery and your vocal really emphasised that imagery, a well placed pause after “the chaos ceased”. This has to be the best song of yours I’ve heard thus far.

What a great place to meditate on life! I've done it lots of times. As always, I really like your lyrics/rhyming--nice and tight. I liked the effects, esp at the end--kind of gave it a "nature's cathedral" feel. Musically, I enjoyed it a lot. It's interesting that the style is "campfire", but you turned it into something more than strumming and making smores. Great work, enjoyed it!

Hi, Marty.

The loping feel of the song has an easy-going sort of western feel to it, which fits.

The vocal effects work well, as does Dave's guitar.

Nice work.

The tremolo of the electric piano is for mystery, and the organ is for piety.

Ah, so that's what it means. laugh

Love this, Marty. It was so powerful it blew the power out here...or maybe it wasn't the song and just coincidence. The lyrics are right up my alley. I really liked the touch of finger snapping (at least that's what it sounded like to me). It's an interesting mood paired with a spiritual lyric. Let's face it; 'gettin' spiritual' isn't always a walk in the park. Sometimes, it's a deep reflection in the woods.

Excellent use of that BAND.

Thanks so much, Bob. Thanks for a nod to the vocal and, man, you're right, Dave killed this one by bringing so much life to it.

Thanks, Arri. But I didn't use the Nectar Dimension setting on this one, so now we can figure it's just my voice you don't like. Man, I get that. Thanks again for the listen, and I'm actually glad to hear your comments. They mean a lot and are very helpful.

Thanks, Ron. The echo FX really only comes in the beginning and ending, like me sitting deep in the forest, coming out to sing about the experience, then going back in the end. Right? What Dave does in this one is beyond perfect.

Marty, this is an outstanding piece of music. Loved your vocal; super effects. I used to take long walks in the woods so I could relate to the lyrics, which were great. Super bass lines. Dave always plays the perfect licks and leads to your song. Great mix.
Loved it.

Thanks, Dave. You are a big chunk of those accolades. Man, I never suggest anything for your parts because you always blow me away with something better than I ever imagined. In this one the fact that you added so much into what I figured would be an empty entrance leading up to a romp in the woods, you brought the Intro to new life. Man, I could talk about your contribution to the extent that folks would know the song sucked without it.

Super tune buddy,
Oh, man, thank you so much, Lee. You even heard the finger clicking. The drum notes on the side of the floor toms just before them was subtle fun representing the insects. Haha. So glad you like it, man.

Thank you, Tom. Yes! You get it, a nature's cathedral feel. Good one. Right? I thought the same thing, Campfire to that. Dave gets the credit for keeping the fire contained while simultaneously scorching the earth.

Thanks, David. Haha. Now you're making fun of me with my wimpy explanation of the piano and organ. Love it, man. Actually laughed out loud. Yes, now I hear a western feel in there, like an easy ride on a horse walking slow, a long piece of straw dangling from my mouth while I strum an old acoustic guitar.

Sitting on a rock or listening to the silence, we are on the same wavelength in the nature's sacred embrace. "Wind blows prayers of peace/So soon the calmness found me, and all the chaos ceased." - that's really beautifully said just like all the other lines expressing the awe for nature.

Lovely orchestration, campfire guitars and snapping create very tasteful ambience. Dave's guitar is a rock on which you can sit calmly and safely.

I enjoyed your expressive voice and how it sounds like it's merging with the talking creatures and the singing forest.

And the video is expressing the harmony perfectly, and the lovely birds animated so lively... reminding me how earlier this week I was browsing my phone outside and the bravest birds came to sit on the edge of the phone to see if I could offer them nuts - I knew they are used to begging for food from tourists, but still it felt like a touching moment smile Excuse me if I'm not around for a while, I might have jumped into your video laugh

The 1st line "Sitting on a rock" slowly crawls out from the arrangement. I don't know if that was deliberate but it works as it pulled me in closer, even though I was wearing cans.
The extraneous percussion replicated the critters and crackles of the wild really well.
Detailed, deliberate and the real deal.

Cheers

Ah, I was thinking of you and Janne, two who mentioned your enjoyment of nature and its physical, emotional, mental and spiritual benefits, while making this one, Beth. Ha, you actually noticed the (3) fingers snapping; it was just a very small part in the beginning. "Let's face it; 'gettin' spiritual' isn't always a walk in the park." Nope, but it might be walking through the park to find that special rock. smile

Wow, that's cool. Thinking of Beth and Janne as this one developed, I also thought of you when that line came out. Man, I'm glad you picked up on it. Yeah, music and I (likely all of us) have a constant conversation. Thanks, Floyd. Seems this forum is a great source for strong inspiration for creativity.

Hey Marty,

I listened to your song this week, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks for posting this. I can tell a lot of work went into this. Beautiful. Has all of your signature ingredients of style.

--David

New special note to my friends: I listen to forum songs for pure enjoyment as part of my daily “radio,” in large chunks, while I am out and about. Then I post all my thoughts from mental notes when I am at my computer. There is no correlation between the time I post and the time I listen. Also, I have zero interest in critiquing, and tend to abhor “you’re the best comparisons” except in jest as an inside joke. Like: “the greatest singer and the greatest song on the forum, “ “no one knows more about BIAB than you,” “the best songwriter, vocalist, and mixer to walk the earth since Elvis Presley and no one else can scarcely compete,” etc. I like everyone here and this is just enjoyment for me. Don’t have time for anything else. Thanks.

Your bass is super smooth with subtle dynamics
It so supports the comforting effect of being in the forest.
Your vocal is excellent and full of emotion that we can relate to.
And that is from living in what Janice calls our “enchanted forest.”

Dave’s excellent guitar (tone and chops) fits the mood so well.
It helped us hear those trees and forest critters talk to us. smile
And that is a fine supporting band and mix.

Your lyric reminds us that we are kindred spirits for sure!

A big ole "WOW!" from us,

J&B

Thanks, Ray. It was all deliberate. It starts out with a ton of reverb that slowly lifts to a point of normalcy when "all the chaos ceased." Reverb came back at the end when I say I may not ever stop. Glad it brought you closer like a whisper in a argument.

Liked this a lot, Marty. It felt a little like the erstwhile Spirit Level, which to me is a really good thing. Definitely created a mood musicallly that fit the lyrics. Liked the ending, too - really a treat in my Sennheiser headphones. Great job on this one.

Thank you, Scott. There is a lot of territory unexplored --some of it is terrifying, some extremely uninviting (i.e., polkas) some of it ready for flag planting.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Thanks, Brain. Atmosphere without attitude is refreshingly breathable.

Thanks you two. Bud you know how the bass fits --"subtle dynamics." Very cool. That forest lives within you in ways that we don't have words for because it's a scary thought. hehe A big ol' THANK YOU from us.

Ooo, I like that comparison, but not sure Scott or Robert would. The mood was only intended in the music until Dave brought the intended to reality.
