Netflix documentary on the man who changed how movie music is done. Interesting look into the life of Hans. Lion King, pirates of the Caribbean, rain man, Batman series, nature documentaries, the thin red line, dune and more. He describes how some of his themes are based on only one or two notes and how he wrote all the themes to one of those movies in one night of work.

There's a huge difference between these AI programs and BiaB, sample libraries, and MIDI tracks: the AI companies don't have the rights to use the voices and instruments that are in their songs.
First, you know I respect you BIG TIME, I hope. I think you are making fantastic points all the way around. I may not agree with some of them now, but that doesn't mean I disagree either. I more of the mind of "I don't know" enough about some of it to really say with confidence on some of it. As an example, and there are many I believe, BIAB has a "style" for Dire Straights that sounds pretty spot on to me. I think if you generated it, most people who know the band would identify it as being that. I'm fairly certain PG Music didn't pay Dire Straights for that signature sound. I don't know though. IF they didn't, I'm still ok with it. It's a sound. A signature sound though. I see this as being a similar situation. Just my opinion my friend. Still see your points. smile

They make of point of not telling where they get their materials from, but here's a project in 2020 that described how it gathered its source material (emphasis added): Quote To train this model, we crawled the web to curate a new dataset of 1.2 million songs (600,000 of which are in English), paired with the corresponding lyrics and metadata from LyricWiki. See: https://openai.com/research/jukebox That is, these programs trawl through millions of copyrighted songs to get their training material. No artist has granted them rights to use their materials, and no artist is compensated. The companies creating the AI programs do a number of things to make it difficult to determine where the source materials come from.
I agree, and I know this point has been made. To me, it's similar to what what we do as humans in many ways. We take reference materials to learn what we need to do then spend the rest of our lives spitting our those things in new combinations. I think the sticking point many times I've seen from people is when WE do it, it's creativity. When a program does it, it's WRONG. Pablo Picasso is often credited assaying “good artists borrow, great artists steal.” Some people say he wasn't the first to say it. To me, this would be ironic if he took that from someone else. smile

One of the most obvious is omitting artist names in tags. So although the AI is capable of rendering a song with the voice/instrument/arrangement of a particular artist, there's no way to request the AI do so. And since a specific voice can't be requested, you'll end up getting a voice that's a combines the attributes of similar voices - enough so that the original singer can't be identified.
Isn't that kind of saying that it's a new voice then. If the voice sounds similar but isn't, it simply isn't that voice, in my opinion.

However, here's something Udio produced when prompted to generate something in the style of the Beatles: https://twitter.com/i/status/1778900566917165512
I am SO curious how they did this. Specifically what prompts they used. I find it EXTEREMLY difficult to get it to sound similar to some of the voices that I was hoping I could get it to sound like for my own purposes of fun. I've got a bit of a voice crush on Halsey and have not come even REMOTELY close to that sound. Like, at all. I must be missing something.

Udio didn't pay the rights holders of The Beatles songs to use their songs, and Paul McCartney didn't authorize Udio to use his voice. In my mind, this is theft (well, technically massive copyright infringement), disguised the same way that money laundering hides the source of illegal profits.
I think you said this in a really effective way. You always have such good points. I sort of feel like they shouldn't have to pay them, in my opinion because we aren't generating any song that sounds exactly like any Beatles song that exists. Yes, it sure sounds like them...but that song doesn't exist anywhere else. I feel the same could be said for the voice issue. Your points are truly fantastic and I can't tell you how much I appreciate them because they make me think, and re-evaluate my thoughts on the subject. Thanks for that! We may not agree but I'm not here to argue. I'm HearToLearn. smile

a little rt wish ... .re gear used. It's obvious that a lot of the pg rt's are created by highly skilled session pros. and from session pro's ive met in studios in the past i realise some might not want to divulge their 'tricks'...totally understandeable… but for example if possibly some of the pg artists might divulge the gear they used in their bios…that would be very nice. particularly for users new to creating songs. ie a learning tool ?...as in learning from the masters ? maybe it's a big ask…just an idea. e.g. I created the stallion song in my sig cos…. I discovered one of mike durham's rock tone rt's one day by accident ... .ie a classic rock tone. basically i dont like rock tones that are too fizzy or too clean. mikes rt i found got me soooo excited i created the stallion song just to showcase his classic tone and guitar talent. happiness. om

I have a reply from AurallySound who also say panning can be an issue and Take Five is panned strongly:
Quote
I took a listen and expected it to do considerably better than it did. My guess would be the rather unusual panning of instruments (the center is really open (!)) is quite different from the rock/pop songs used to train the stem separator. Will training does do some dynamic re-panning it doesn't do anything as extreme as pushing the drums so far left--perhaps something to look into.
Take Five was recorded in 1959, so could have originally been mono limited stereo. That they expected it to do better is encouraging, though some other tunes I tried were also less than brilliant.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
