Greetings to all,

I just installed BIAB 2013 this evening and so far, so good - except for one thing. It's very important to me to be able to turn off the part marker on the very first measure of each song so that it won't start with a crash cymbal. (It does that even though the feature is deselected on the "Arrange" tab of PREFS just as it always has in the past.)

With 2012.5, I could right click on the first bar's part marker and select <no change of substyle> and then save it and it would always open without a part marker there and I wouldn't get the unwanted crash on beat 1. But since I installed 2013, it comes back. I tried resetting it and saving it, but when I reopen the song, it's back, and I don't want it to be there! It's doing this on all songs, too, using different styles and RealTracks, so it seems to be a global issue.

This may not seem like a big deal to some, but I'm using the program leading praise & worship every weekend in church and the crash cymbal on beat 1 of soft songs is disruptive. I really need this feature to be "restored," please, so I can have no part marker on beat 1 (and no crash cymbal).

Thanks!

Jim

OK, you found the checkbox and it still doesn't work? First suggestion, even though this is a new install, is to do Opt., Return to Factory Settings.

Second suggestion is a workaround. Start the song with a blank first bar, like "C.". If 4 beats is too long a wait, use F5 and shorten the number of beats.

Third suggestion is to freeze the song and email it to PG Music Support (assuming no one else comes up with a fix).

By the way, I'm assuming you were just shipped the program, but if not, make sure you have updated to Build #365.

As far as the part marker, I thought it has always been the case that you can't remove the part marker on the first bar (although you can make it a B/green substyle). I'm really surprised you were able to do so. When I get back to BIAB, I want to try this again.

Good luck!

Hi 1manband,

There is a Prefs setting that is designed to turn the first bar cymbal crash OFF globally (for all songs).

Hit the Prefs toolbar button and in the Prefs selection window, hit "Arrange".

Locate "First bar of chorus of song gets a cymbal crash" at lower LH of the Arrange window and UNcheck it.

I have had that unchecked for several years now, ever since Peter implemented it. Almost forgot about it. I don't miss it <g>.

What makes his problem confusing is he said he already did that.

ah, thanks for pointing that out, Matt. Missed it. <g>

I couldn't imagine my needing to "Return to Factory Settings" after just doing an update to 2013 and not changing any settings, but just to be sure, I did it anyway just now. Unfortunately, it did not fix the problem. The part marker remains on bar 1 that was not there before, resulting in an unwanted crash cymbal. By the way, I do have build 365 installed.

I didn't fully explain why this is a big deal to me. I select the praise & worship set for our church before the service and save it as a set in Favorite Songs, then I play it back using the Jukebox feature, with the playback set to pause until a midi note or keystroke is received. On slow songs, we usually go through the song or at least one verse softly with guitar only and then I bring in "the band" with a Delcom footswitch. We're still playing softly at this point so the crash cymbal on the first beat is disruptive. And I can't take the time to manually eliminate the part marker before starting the song; I'm too busy singing, playing guitar, and leading worship to do that.

I didn't have to worry about this issue before. A couple of years ago one of PG Music's support staff told me to right click on the part marker of measure 1 to eliminate the crash, and it has worked perfectly ever since - till now.

Does anyone have any other ideas? If not, this seems to be a bug in the latest version.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
